How do you refer to future weekends?

This sounds really silly but could you guys solve an argument for me that has been going for about 10 years!?

If we were say it is currently Wednesday night. and you were to refer to the weekend that happens in 9 days time (ie: not the weekend that will happen in approximately 2 days, but the weekend that will happen 7 days after the 2 days have elapsed) , would you say in casual conversation, either:

  1. " the weekend after next..." or perhaps "not this weekend but the next one"

OR

  1. " next weekend..."

Please reply with 1) or 2) and if you can be bothered explain why?

TIA x

I'd say next weekend. The weekend coming up I'd call this weekend.

40weekswithno2 · 25/11/2020 19:05

2 - next weekend.

This weekend is the one just coming and next weekend is the next one after that.

flaviaritt · 25/11/2020 19:05

To me, ‘next weekend’ means ‘the next one’. So the weekend after next means... the one after the next.

Friolero · 25/11/2020 19:06

I’d say next weekend (as opposed to this weekend for the one in 2 days)

Planty13 · 25/11/2020 19:08

I’d say next weekend.

The coming weekend would be ‘this weekend’

amicissimma · 25/11/2020 19:08

I'm at the bus stop. I phone my friend and say I'll be on the next bus. When one turns up I get on it, I don't let it go by and take the one after.

SomewhereInbetween1 · 25/11/2020 19:08

This is an argument DH and I have ALL THE TIME 😂

So for instance, if I was referring to 28th & 29th I would say THIS weekend.

If I was referring to 5th & 6th I would say NEXT weekend.

DH would say that the 28th & 29th is NEXT weekend as it's the next weekend. Which I think is total bollocks 😁

Sciurus83 · 25/11/2020 19:08

2 leaves room for confusion, I would only use if I had prefaced with "not this weekend but...."

Louiselouie0890 · 25/11/2020 19:08

Not this weekend but next

amicissimma · 25/11/2020 19:09

See, in SomewhereInbetween1's scenario, if I could see the bus I wouldn't let the fact that it was 'this' one affect the fact that it was also the 'next' one to come along.

DieSchottin93 · 25/11/2020 19:09

Next weekend. Because there is still one weekend before that, which I would refer to as "this weekend". As a receptionist it really annoys me when people phone up to book something for "next weekend" but they actually mean the upcoming weekend Envy

nosswith · 25/11/2020 19:09

Bizarre thread.

Roseability18 · 25/11/2020 19:09

I'd say next weekend, but I'd also clarify that the person I was speaking to understood that to mean the same thing! So I'd end up saying something clunky like 'next weekend, a week on Saturday'. This has been a point of confusion in our family!

Lazypuppy · 25/11/2020 19:10

I would say NEXT weekend, as the one closest is THIS weekend

Mehmehmeh19 · 25/11/2020 19:10

The weekend after next. Next weekend to me means the coming one.

Thestreets · 25/11/2020 19:10

Exactly this, it's definitely next weekend!!
Tiredmum100 · 25/11/2020 19:10

'The weekend after next' if it was in 9 days time. 'This weekend coming' if it was the same week.

DuzzyFuck · 25/11/2020 19:10

I'd say 1 until about Friday in which case we're already basically in 'this weekend' so something the following would be 'next weekend'.

Had this exact discussion with DP the other day.

hollywoodstar · 25/11/2020 19:10

2 - next weekend.

The nearest weekend is this weekend and the one after is next.

merlotormalbec · 25/11/2020 19:10

1 always

dotoallasyouwouldbedoneby · 25/11/2020 19:11

On a Wednesday evening, I would say 1) 'the weekend after next'
On a Friday evening, it would already be 'this weekend' so 'next weekend' would mean the one 7=8 days away.
It's complicated...

ImAllOut · 25/11/2020 19:11

Oh my god I'm glad I'm not the only one who has this argument. In this case I would probably say 2) next weekend, because I would say 'this weekend' for the weekend coming up in the near future ie. within several days.

My husband and I have a similar argument over this week and next week. So he basically counts every Monday as the beginning of the week even if it's a day or two before. For example on a Friday or Saturday he will say 'next week' for the Monday or Tuesday two or three days ahead, whereas I would say 'this week'. It's the source of much frustration and confusion!

DontTouchTheMoustache · 25/11/2020 19:12

I say next weekend but I know it can be confusing so I will usually say "next weekend, so weekend of the 8th" for example

Greektome · 25/11/2020 19:14

This gets to me too. Our language doesn't deal with this well. And how do you describe the weekend that's just happened?
So - it's Monday. Do you say - "What did you do this weekend?" about the one that's just gone?
And surely - if it's Monday you have to talk about the weekend that starts on Saturday as "next weekend"?

Nottherealslimshady · 25/11/2020 19:14

2

It goes, last weekend, this weekend, next weekend, weekend after next.
