How do you refer to future weekends?

This sounds really silly but could you guys solve an argument for me that has been going for about 10 years!?

If we were say it is currently Wednesday night. and you were to refer to the weekend that happens in 9 days time (ie: not the weekend that will happen in approximately 2 days, but the weekend that will happen 7 days after the 2 days have elapsed) , would you say in casual conversation, either:

  1. " the weekend after next..." or perhaps "not this weekend but the next one"

OR

  1. " next weekend..."

Please reply with 1) or 2) and if you can be bothered explain why?

TIA x

Obviously it's next weekend!!

The previous weekend is 'last weekend'
The weekend coming up is 'this weekend'
The one after that is 'next weekend'

It's simple logic.
(Although if it was early on in the week I probably would clarify).

1!!!

Who are all these people who would say 2 without making it clear that it's, "not this weekend, but the next"?!

The 'next weekend' is the weekend that occurs...next. If it's a Wednesday, the next weekend is the one in 2 days!

I can't believe there are so many votes for 2. You're all monsters (or maybe the culprit is the English language...). GrinWink

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 25/11/2020 22:12

It’s next weekend. That’s the convention, and anything else is incorrect.

Definitely 2! Amazed by people saying 1, never knowingly heard "next weekend" being used to refer to one in 2 days time...

It is -
This weekend (28th Nov)
Next weekend (5th Dec)
Weekend after next (12th Dec)

PizzaForOne · 25/11/2020 22:18

This and next

Works with all days of the week

This Friday vs next Friday for example

PartyAPartyB · 25/11/2020 22:21

@TodayNoMore

How can you possibly justify "the weekend after next" meaning anything other than, "the weekend after the next one" - i.e. not the one in two days (literally the next weekend to come), but the one after (in nine days' time)?!

This is hilarious, my head is exploding and I will definitely have to make sure to clarify what dates people are talking about next time this comes up!

But, if I were making arrangements with anyone, I'd always make doubly sure, as I know people have different opinions about this.

winetime89 · 25/11/2020 22:25

2-next weekend
the weekend coming up would be this weekend.
this has confused people in the past though when I've being making plans, I think it's obvious.

Doublechins · 25/11/2020 22:25

Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th are this weekend.

December 5th and December 6th are next weekend.

So 2

StanfordPines · 25/11/2020 22:26

@amicissimma

1)

I'm at the bus stop. I phone my friend and say I'll be on the next bus. When one turns up I get on it, I don't let it go by and take the one after.

Well I don’t recall the last time I used a bus so I will refer to the weekend coming up as this weekend and the one after as next weekend. 😀
UrghThisIsHard · 25/11/2020 22:26

This is crazy! 😂

The one coming is THIS weekend and the one after is NEXT weekend. I’ve never heard of anything else!

Warpdrive · 25/11/2020 22:27

If I am talking about the very next weekend that we are going to encounter, the impending weekend, I'll say next weekend.
If I'm talking about the weekend after that, I'll say not this weekend but the one after.

I think this comes about because people have contracted "the weekend which falls after next week" into "next weekend but it doesn't actually make logical sense to do that.

The next weekend we will encounter should be referred to as "next weekend".

CatsOutOfTheBag · 25/11/2020 22:32

Today is the 25th November, so if I was referring to the 28th /29th November in a conversation today, I would say 'this weekend.'

If I was referring to the 5th/6th of December in a conversation today, I would say 'the weekend after next.'

If someone said today on the 25th November, 'next weekend', I would think they were referring to this weekend, not the 5th/6th of December

tigger001 · 25/11/2020 22:35

Oh my husband and I have been having the same discussion for years and still need to clarify which one we mean

For your example
I would say next weekend as the one coming is this weekend.

Hubby would say next weekend as it is the next weekend to come

PenelopePiper · 25/11/2020 22:40

Number 2. Gavel!

The weekend in 2 days time is THIS weekend.

The weekend in 9 days is NEXT weekend.

The weekend after NEXT.would be 16 days away!

The BUS analogy does work (but not as the PP means it).

If you are waiting at a bus stop and you see the bus coming (like a weekend in 2-3 days) - that is THIS bus. If you let everyone on before you and there no room, you would say I'll get the NEXT bus (not THIS bus but the NEXT bus)

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 25/11/2020 22:44

Anything in this week (including the weekend) is happening THIS WEEK. So this Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday/etc. And this weekend.

Anything in next week is happening NEXT WEEK. Next Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday/etc. And next weekend.

seayork2020 · 25/11/2020 22:45

today is 26th Nov (where I am not sure the time difference) so to me 'next weekend' is 5th Dec

'the weekend after next' would be 12th Dec

TyroTerf · 25/11/2020 22:45

Given the potential for confusion I'd say "Next weekend as in not this one."

If it were a specific weekend day, say the 5th, that would just be "Saturday week."

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 25/11/2020 22:46

Yes.
Notjustanymum · 25/11/2020 22:48

Dictionary definition of next is:
(of a time) coming immediately after the time of writing or speaking.
So on a Friday, the next weekend also starts the next day!
