How do you refer to future weekends?

This sounds really silly but could you guys solve an argument for me that has been going for about 10 years!?

If we were say it is currently Wednesday night. and you were to refer to the weekend that happens in 9 days time (ie: not the weekend that will happen in approximately 2 days, but the weekend that will happen 7 days after the 2 days have elapsed) , would you say in casual conversation, either:

  1. " the weekend after next..." or perhaps "not this weekend but the next one"

OR

  1. " next weekend..."

Please reply with 1) or 2) and if you can be bothered explain why?

TIA x

Next Weekend.

This weekend for the weekend coming up.

IME there is no consistency so I ALWAYS specify with "in ten days" "in a week and a half" or give the date. There is too much potential confusion otherwise.

If I am referring to the weekend in three days' time I always say "this weekend" as that cannot be misinterpreted.

There is no right answer, the two groups are simply implying different valid invisible reference points that "next" is relative to.

For me, there is never a need to use "next" to describe the nearest weekend, therefore by inserting "next" you must be inserting a pointer to a different weekend. The "next" one after "the" or "this" weekend.

The people who are using it to refer the nearest weekend are using "next" to mean the next one after the moment of speaking. Their invisible reference point is the moment of speaking, rather than the coming weekend.

2 - but I've been pulled up on this in the past Grin I know what I mean when I say it

wishywashywoowoo70 · 27/11/2020 22:22

@Tashface

"Not THIS weekend, but NEXT weekend"

Accompanied by my right index finger pointing to the front of an imaginary bump (representing THIS weekend) and then to the back of the imaginary bump (representing NEXT weekend). Weird - wish I hadn't thought about it that much!

Ha ha ha I totally do this too
Figgyboa · 27/11/2020 22:52

Neither...I say the following weekend

Dishwashersaurous · 27/11/2020 22:55

One.

Next weekend is the weekend which is coming up.

This weekend is if you are actually at the weekend. eg tomorrow is now this weekend

Ilovesugar · 27/11/2020 22:57

1 it’s the weekend after next.

If there is a bus coming it’s the next bus I don’t say we are getting on the next bus but mean the one after?

Everyone saying it’s the next weekend, if your first or second in a queue when are you next?

Dee1975 · 27/11/2020 23:04

I say 1. But think 2. But always feel the need to explain as others seem to think ‘next weekend’ is ‘this weekend’. Which of course it isn’t. This weekend is this weekend and next weekend is the next ...!!

amicissimma · 27/11/2020 23:11

If I can actually see a bus then this bus and the next one are the same - the one coming is the next. The second one is the one after next. I don't say the one after this.

If I can't see a bus, I know (hope!) there is one, so there isn't a 'this', but the one just behind the big lorry down the road, is 'next'.
