Disturbing footage from outside parliament

Wildswim · 25/11/2020 15:25

I think this is a disturbing incident and agree with the MP for raising it in parliament (not that anyone was there to listen).

A woman was manhandled into a van by a posse of policemen. She had been peacefully protesting and not causing any disturbance.

Being old doesn't give you the right to ignore or break the law.

When was peaceful protesting against the law? Confused

She wasn’t breaking the law.

Being old doesn't give you the right to ignore or break the law.

Who says she was breaking the law? Did you even read the article?

ImNotMeImSomeoneElse · 25/11/2020 15:33

What law was she breaking?

KrisAkabusi · 25/11/2020 15:34

Gathering in groups is against the law at the moment. Refusing to cooperate with officers in enforcing that law is also against the law.
Two other people were also arrested for the same offences. Why are you not outraged by their treatment?

KrisAkabusi · 25/11/2020 15:35

And yes, I did read that article. The final paragraph is an explanation of why she was arrested.

She wasn't breaking the law.

Nor was she the first woman this year to be carried off by police for legal demonstration.

Anyone have any pictures of law abiding men being carted off from a peaceful, legal demonstration yet?

fatblackcatspaw · 25/11/2020 15:38

I think its illegal to protest outside parliament in normal times.

Wildswim · 25/11/2020 15:38

Interesting question.

ghostyslovesheets · 25/11/2020 15:38

she was arrested for breaching Covid restrictions (the group where asked to disperse and refused) she then resisted arrest causing her to be carried - had she a) moved along or b) walked calmly to the police van it would not have been so dramatic and given the covid sceptic politician a platform :)

CuriousaboutSamphire · 25/11/2020 15:39

@KrisAkabusi

And yes, I did read that article. The final paragraph is an explanation of why she was arrested.
And yet it is legal, during times of covid, for political protest to happen, peacefully, distanced etc.

"refusing to engage" is not an arrestabel offence, is it? And the officer is citing 'gatherings of two or more peole' ignoring the political protest aspect! As has been done to other peaceful female protest earlier this year!

Cygne · 25/11/2020 15:39

The majority of people arrested under the Covid laws have either not been charged or convicted, or had convictions overturned, because they are badly written and the police misinterpret them. I therefore would take with a pinch of salt police claims that this lady was breaking the law.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 25/11/2020 15:41

She wasn't breaking the law

Sigh....

Yes she was.

The only surprising thing about this is their refusal to engage rather than the current fad for bringing up Magna Carta in an attempt to excuse themselves. Why people seem to believe that dark ages and medieval feudal legislation somehow takes precedence over the Coronavirus Act 2020 is beyond me.

Presumably they're the same people that got told by their hairdresser auntie that the police can't do this or that, so take it as fact and start spouting utter nonsense at the arresting officers.

YoungScrappyHungry · 25/11/2020 15:44

You know what, on the same day police have had their pay frozen, when they were the ones out there, getting spat at by people claiming to have corona, fuck off with this thread. Get the full facts and stop police bashing at a time when you've, without even realising it, have needed them more than ever.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 25/11/2020 15:50

Good grief @XDownwiththissortofthingX you are absolutely correct!

Lockdown 2 doesn't allow political protests!

I take back all I said EXCEPT the bit about no men having been carted off for doing the same - despite there having been other protests recently.

The Million Mask March for example. They didn't go peacefully!

Nowhere is spitting mentioned in any of the numerous reports of this episode. Making things up doesn’t make them facts. And the public sector pay freeze doesn’t entitle the police to do as they like without being held to account.
CakeRequired · 25/11/2020 15:55

'A group had come together to protest. Police engaged with those present and explained the current restrictions around gatherings of more than two people.

'Two women refused to engage and were subsequently arrested for breaching the coronavirus restrictions.

'A short while later part of the group had re-gathered outside the Palace of Westminster. A third woman refused to comply, was arrested for breaching the coronavirus restrictions and then became uncooperative with officers

Says right there why she was arrested. How do we know she didn't start saying stuff to the police either when off camera or out of earshot?

She broke the law. What do you expect the police to do, just ignore the people breaking the law? Hmm

Yep, agree.
jessstan1 · 25/11/2020 15:56

Being bundled into a police van at the age of 72 is probably the highlight of the woman's life! I'm sure she was let go quickly enough. 72 isn't that old either, I'm 70 and nothing wrong with me. I am not anti-vaccine or anti-lockdown but am sure I can find something to protest about.....I'll try it :-) (tomorrow).

The woman wasn't being disruptive anyway.

MuttertheButter · 25/11/2020 15:57

My Aunt is a hairdresser and honestly I've never heard her say this Confused

ViciousJackdaw · 25/11/2020 15:57

For the benefit of those who do not wish to click on a Fail link, the final paragraph reads:

A third woman refused to comply, was arrested for breaching the coronavirus restrictions and then became uncooperative with officers

It seems she could have avoided arrest by doing what the police asked of her. No sympathy whatsoever.

@Wildswim Do try and find a more reputable source of news. The Daily Fail is not known for unbiased reporting.

Bloody propaganda

WhereverIGoddamnLike · 25/11/2020 16:11

She wasnt "spread eagled" and dragged away by them. She did the thing which toddlers do which is going limp and being a dead weight. They had to lift her and move her because she wouldn't move with them. They didnt drag her arms and legs apart or force her into that position. She played dead.

We might not like it but we are not allowed to gather like that right now and she refused to comply.
