Disturbing footage from outside parliament

I think this is a disturbing incident and agree with the MP for raising it in parliament (not that anyone was there to listen).

A woman was manhandled into a van by a posse of policemen. She had been peacefully protesting and not causing any disturbance.

One does wonder whether the Mp would have been so supportive of ‘right to protest’ had it been students or a protest he didn’t support.

I don’t think we need to wonder at all.
frumpety · 25/11/2020 16:19

She is only 72, I wonder how she will feel as being described as elderly ?

She certainly looks in fairly good nick for her age , hardly a frail old lady, and I rather like her scarve Smile Back in the day it was seen as a bit of a poor show if you didn't get arrested at a protest, like you hadn't fully committed to the cause Grin

Wildswim · 25/11/2020 16:19

Lockdown 2 doesn't allow political protests

Chilling.

Don't see it reported anywhere else. Daily Mail covers lots of stories other outlets do not. I'm grateful for that.

YoungScrappyHungry:

You know what, on the same day police have had their pay frozen, when they were the ones out there, getting spat at by people claiming to have corona, fuck off with this thread. Get the full facts and stop police bashing at a time when you've, without even realising it, have needed them more than ever.

100% agree.

HesterShaw1 · 25/11/2020 16:25

And the public sector pay freeze doesn’t entitle the police to do as they like without being held to account.

Absolutely.

There have been plenty of protests this year. And I agree, I have yet to see a large man being carried into a police van.

fashu · 25/11/2020 16:26

I hate police bashing! We have such a great police force. I see so many stories that don't show the entire picture. Unless you were actually there, you cannot really say she was not breaking the law (I mean it's an article from the Daily Mail :| )
Coming from a country where police are extremely corrupt and accept easy bribes, I have nothing but respect for UK Police. Yes there are rogue officers, but most are just doing their job and following the rules. I've seen videos from my brother from our window, who still lives in our home country of police beating people for being out during lock-down. I don't even want to describe what happens if you get taken to a police station and you don't have enough money to bribe them!

It's been reported in load of papers. The Daily Mail is utterly shit.

A spokesman said: “A group had come together to protest. Police engaged with those present and explained the current restrictions around gatherings of more than two people.

“Two women refused to engage and were subsequently arrested for breaching the coronavirus restrictions.

“A short while later part of the group had re-gathered outside the Palace of Westminster.

"A third woman refused to comply, was arrested for breaching the coronavirus restrictions and then became uncooperative with officers.

“She was taken by police transport to custody.”

There was a video going round of one in Liverpool.....I've seen plenty of men getting carried into Police vans and people have the same reaction, that the police are awful. However someone else shared a video of him refusing to move from a protest of more than 6 people. I've seen at least 3 in Liverpool alone.

Really? Here is a photo from a BBC report of protesters being arrested. This man is being pinned to the floor by riot police - do you think he was subsequently asked to get in a police van or do you think he was probably "bundled" into the back of one by multiple officers?
VinylDetective · 25/11/2020 16:31

A non Fail link. Apparently the woman was to blame for “going limp”. Classic victim blaming.

WoolieLiberal · 25/11/2020 16:35

At least it’s not America where she’d be shot.

What the actual fuck? If she won't walk into a police car, what are they supposed to do? Leave her there? Tell her she could go? She had been arrested and needed to be brought to the station. Please tell me how they should have got her there if she wasn't going to go voluntarily.

WoolieLiberal · 25/11/2020 16:36

For once I agree with the Torie.

THIS IS UN-BRITISH!!

As an older woman I'd feel quite patronised to have some old bloke in parliament focusing on me being old and a woman, either he agrees with people (male and female young and old) being arrested for peaceful protest or he doesn't. I'm not a special case.

She shouldn’t have been arrested in the first place. I find it terrifying that people think this is OK. We’re just sleep walking into the kind of society I really don’t want to live in.
Merrymumoftwo · 25/11/2020 16:40

The press followed this protest around and could have filmed all the times the police spoke to this group, which included Piers Corbyn, explaining the need to disperse and why but they didn’t. Just like the bagpiper on Remembrance Sunday they wanted to ensure they captured the bit that showed the police arresting someone. This protest by this time had been going on hours. But hey media don’t hate the police right?

SoupDragon · 25/11/2020 16:43

Why? The police explained that they had to move because of coronavirus restrictions and gave them the opportunity to simply go. 2 women were arrested at that point for not complying with this request. Part of the group came back and this woman refused to leave s requested, was arrested for breaching the restrictions and became uncooperative.

She shouldn’t have been arrested because the right to peaceful protest is a fundamental tenet of our society. The extent to which our population is, not only allowing our basic freedom to be eroded, but also defending it is truly alarming. I’m truly shocked that so many people are happy with this.
Rosehip10 · 25/11/2020 16:48

Don't comply with the law, refuse to change behaviour when asked, get arrested - age/sex/whatever irrelevant. Hopefully this will make her think twice before acting like an entitled idiot who is above the law of the land. The ranting tory MP was an idiot too - as someone said, bet he wouldn't have been saying anything if it was a environmental/student fee protester being arrested.
