AIBU to be shocked that this still goes on in the USA? Trigger warning: corporal punishment in schools

I feel completely sick seeing this. Apparently corporal punishment is still legal in the Deep South.

Sick fucking country!

So glad to be British.

Seriously? All the fucked up stuff that happens in the States and this is a surprise to you? Have you not seen the figures on child on child shootings or the children in cages?

plumpootle · 24/11/2020 09:56

I am horrified by this. I actually think that the USA is not a civilised country sometimes.

IamTomHanks · 24/11/2020 09:58

This is a place that locks children in cages and still has conversion therapy. Doesn't surprise me at all.

LoveMyKidsAndCats · 24/11/2020 10:02

I didn't know this. Disgusting. Poor boy. That's really sad. All my motherly instincts would want to grab that and hit the woman hitting my child. What if they hit too hard and really hurt the child? I know they want to hurt them but still...

SunniCameHomeWithAVengeance · 24/11/2020 10:07

Children in cages separated from parents, children with guns, child marriage. Take your pick of horrific things allowed in one of the richest countries in the world.

Magicpaintbrush · 24/11/2020 10:08

If a teacher did that in the UK they would be arrested.

I am not surprised by this video - but I am disgusted. What sort of twisted human being would strike a a five year old little boy with what is basically a cricket bat? Not only are they physically injuring a defenceless child, they are teaching him that it's okay to assault people, and he will also now have an underlying awareness that his mother doesn't have his back because she stood there and (albeit unwillingly) let them hurt and frighten him and didn't help him. The result might then be that he grows up thinking it's okay to hit people or similar, and he will have a mistrust of his own mother and of those in authority - and what sort of adult will he then become because of that? The absolute short sightedness, stupidity and cruelty of it is off the scale.

BloodyMuppet · 24/11/2020 10:19

I think you are being unreasonable to be shocked. The US has some dire outdated practices and this mother was scared she would be sent to jail if she did not allow the punishment - which other first-world countries not only allow schools to beat children but emotionally blackmail the parent into allowing it??

CorianderLord · 24/11/2020 10:19

What the fuck? He's FIVE.

And coerced parental permission under threat of arrest is not consent in any way shape or form.

MozzchopsThirty · 24/11/2020 10:20

I couldn't watch after about 3 seconds and that's not me, I'm pretty tough, his cries were enough Sad

BloodyMuppet · 24/11/2020 10:24

I agree with you.

I can't see how anyone can be surprised at this though. The US has the highest rate of women in 'Correctional facilities' in the world.

CSIblonde · 24/11/2020 10:25

Individual states have different laws re everything in the US, from animal welfare to capital punishment for children & marriage at 14 if your parents give ieemission (27 states still allow this). Super Nanny reported a dad for using a belt on his child only to find it's legal in their state. It's no way to run a country . Shambolic & medieval.

grannyinapram · 24/11/2020 10:32

His little baby cry really made my stomach drop.
I remember being terrified of teachers using their words at that age, never mind weapons.

eddiemairswife · 24/11/2020 10:40

The USA is not a civilised country.

SebastianTheCrab · 24/11/2020 10:45

@eddiemairswife

The USA is not a civilised country.

Ive spent a lot of time there and agree with this. Everything about them from the politics to their judicial system is corrupt.

The image of America we get in the movies and on social media is fake unless basically you're super rich.

SebastianTheCrab · 24/11/2020 10:46

And btw my comment wasn't party political. All sides are genuinely as bad as each other.

alterego2 · 24/11/2020 10:57

That video and the article are from April 2016. Have you checked to see if any of the states have changed their policies in the intervening 4 1/2 years?

Whilst I agree it's disgusting that corporal punishment is still allowed any where, it's a little late to getting up in arms about this case.

BoggledBudgie · 24/11/2020 11:07

Another reason the us shouldn’t be one of the worlds major powers. Absolutely deplorable country and the people in it don’t deserve the lives they have. Disgusting.

Mcnotty · 24/11/2020 11:08

@eddiemairswife

The USA is not a civilised country.
Hmm...you don’t know what ‘uncivilised’ is.
safeea · 24/11/2020 11:24

Look into Èlan School, where young people were abused and mentally manipulated.

BlackeyedSusan · 24/11/2020 11:38

there are lots of stories of police being called to arrest small children getting upset in school too.

PrincessNutNut · 24/11/2020 11:48

@eddiemairswife

The USA is not a civilised country.
And if it weren't ruled primarily by English-speaking white (or orange) men in three piece suits, we would see that much more clearly.

I can't even read that story, it's too upsetting. I realise it's not new but it's not THAT old, has anything changed? A five year old child!

Soubriquet · 24/11/2020 11:54

That poor little boy. Especially with him crying for his mum to help him.

I couldn’t stand there and let them do that

EKGEMS · 24/11/2020 11:55

@BoggledBudgie We don't deserve the lives that we have? WTF does that even mean? There's all kinds of policies and laws here in the US that we citizens hate with a passion but can do nothing about? We can vote and we can protest but we live in a democratic republic where lawmakers can vote however they like. There's plenty of shit that happens in the UK that I'm sure not every citizen loves.

EKGEMS · 24/11/2020 11:59

Corporal punishment does not happen in all fifty states and territories-its an archaic practice that rarely is effective and no the police do not get called frequently on children who are merely upset. Americans can vote and protest and boycott but we can't instantly change laws-that takes time and money. Children in cages and gun massacres-do you honestly think normal Americans support that?

PrincessNutNut · 24/11/2020 12:03

Given the crazy pro-gun campaigning that takes place every time there's another gun massacre, I don't think there's a strong enough movement to effect the necessary changes to counter them.
