Midwives are underpaid and are very understaffed but they do an amazing job! They did an amazing job caring for me and my kids and i cannot thank them enough. They deserve more praise. Icons really

Most are. Some are not as great, but the majority do an excellent job and I am very grateful

StylishMummy · 23/11/2020 21:53

I've seen both the incredible ladies who go well above the call of duty, and the nasty, belittling cows who seem to revel in other's discomfort. There's a full spectrum of personalities much like any other job

PinkiOcelot · 23/11/2020 21:53

Not all midwives are great. Some aren’t even mediocre.

AnneLovesGilbert · 23/11/2020 21:55

Icons? They’re human beings. Some good ones. Some incredible ones. Some crap ones. Some fucking awful ones.

Have you been drinking?

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 23/11/2020 21:57

Some are great, some are shit, and some call you a paranoid mess when you know something is wrong in your pregnancy, threaten to get you sectioned if you don't stop insisting something is wrong, then your baby is born with massive issues and dies two weeks later, then the midwife says you probably stressed yourself into it and refuses to apologise for not listening to you throughout pregnancy.

theantsgomarchin · 23/11/2020 21:58

Are you ok?

Some are angels on earth, most are great. Some are awful.

I've had 3 DC and met some very good, some very bad and some in the middle. Like any other profession I guess.

The only one who stays in my memory after 28 years, was a nasty passive aggressive cow who used to 'speak to me' through my newborn.

She actually said to him, "Doesn't mummy think you're precious enough to try to breast feed you?"

I asked her if she was on medication or if she truly believed newborn babies can talk Hmm

SittingAround1 · 23/11/2020 22:05

The two midwives who assisted my first birh were incredibly supportive and encouraging. The first was disappointed I hadn't given birh by the time her shift ended. The second arrived very enthusiastic and got me through it.

WorraLiberty · 23/11/2020 22:05

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult Sad Thanks

alittlequinnie · 23/11/2020 22:12

Just like with every profession - good and bad!

I had an awful experience with the midwife who delivered my only baby. It was 32 years ago so I hope things have changed but the two things that stick in my head are - her smacking me - yes, smacking me for swearing during labour (no pain relief) and her asking me what I thought was to push more and me saying "I can't" then her replying with "no, you stupid girl, I'm asking you if you want your baby delivered onto your stomach".

On the ward afterwards though the midwives were really nice!

ScotchBunnet · 23/11/2020 22:17

I’ve only met lovely, supportive and kind midwives throughout my pregnancy. I’m very grateful to them.

Bluetonic41 · 23/11/2020 23:21

Yes some may be nice but the ones that left me in 2nd stage labour for 5 hours without seeking medical help in time certainly weren't

jelly79 · 23/11/2020 23:22

Every one I have met have been amazing!

Now my daughter is in training and I am so proud.

I'm so, so sorry to read this Thanks

Depends on the midwife! I had a shocker for my first birth - she nearly cost my child her life and lied about it too.

One of my friends is a midwife and while she's never delivered my DC, I imagine she's amazing at her job. It's a tough role for sure but like all professions some people just aren't cut out for it and shouldn't be in the job.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 24/11/2020 00:21

Are you bored tonight OP? Your other thread is complaining about nurses neglecting their patients?

Thedogscollar · 24/11/2020 00:29

@brittneysmith
Thankyou so much for your lovely comments. I am a midwife of over 26 years now and have been so saddened to see some very sad stories on here about uncaring and unsympathetic midwives.

I work in a fairly large obstetric unit caring for ladies with high risk and low risk pregnancies and I can honestly say that not one midwife in our unit is uncaring. I have worked with them all over many years and some of them I have mentored as students.

A midwife means with women and in this time of covid this meaning has escalated to a new level.
I love my job and I give my all to ensure that my ladies have a great birth experience. It should be one of the best days of your lives and it remains such a privilege and pleasure for me after all these years if I can in any way make that day any easier or pleasurable for them and their birth partner.

@DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult. I am so sorry you had that awful experience. Dear God no woman should have to endure that. Flowers
