To be surprised that the Royal Mail Christmas stamps are all religious?

I thought for a change I'd get proper Christmas stamps this year. Didn't expect them to be all religious and no choice!

Is this usually what's on offer? I don't object personally, but I think most of those I send to won't care for a religious stamp.

No it was Madonna and child in front of a stained-glass window.

if your going to be offended by a stamp with Jesus on during Christmas you have some serious underlying issues.

As the OP says, it's not the Jesus/Christian thing per se, it's that these stamps don't give you any choice.
I don't mind a wise man or a Virgin Mary, but I would like the option of a robin or a pudding too.

andtheHossyourodeinon · 24/11/2020 16:11

Why does everyone always deny that Christmas is a religious festival

Cos its not, I'm guessing.

The past is not now. Why can't you understand that?

gottakeeponmovin · 24/11/2020 16:15

It's a religious festival - that's why we have Christmas - whether or not people still on a whole celebrate is a such doesn't change the fact that is the basis for it

andtheHossyourodeinon · 24/11/2020 16:17

*It WAS religious festival - that's why we have Christmas - whether or not people still on a whole celebrate is a such doesn't change the fact that WAS the basis for it (although it wasn't at all the original basis for it)"

Fixed that for you.

gottakeeponmovin · 24/11/2020 16:24

It is still a religious festival for 60 percent of the U.K. and anyone who isn't a complete dimwit knows that's what the holiday is about whether they celebrate it as such or not

Moonmelodies · 24/11/2020 16:27

What on earth has she got to do with it?

22%

"only 1 in 5 Brits (22%) said that celebrating the birth of Christ makes Christmas an important time, suggesting that Christmas has become a fundamentally secular festival for most.

BHA Chief Executive Andrew Copson added ‘Humans across Europe have gathered together at the darkest and coldest time of the year to feast and appreciate each other’s company in the warm since long before Christianity. Sometimes the charge is levelled at humanists that to celebrate Christmas is hypocritical, but this research puts that myth to bed.

For an overwhelming majority of people in Britain, this time of year has nothing to do with religion and everything to do with celebrating the life we have with the people we love.’"

LOL. As fucking IF. I think you added a zero in there, sneaky. 6% is more like it, if that.

Ah you're not a complete dimwit , don't be so hard on yourself. It's about decorations and consumerisma nd drinking and fun with family. We all know it!!

You know what she's like - gets in on everything trying to stay relevant Wink

Apparently last year 38% of the population identified as Christian. ,

Meraas · 24/11/2020 16:56

To avoid the stamp picture issue why not buy a franking machine grin

Do you mean a Frankincense machine?

You can just use a normal stamp.

If you really feel the need you can draw a holly leaf or similar on the envelope.

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 24/11/2020 17:14

I used to buy stamps when they were on sale because if it says 1st then you save money. Not sure if the shops still do that.

andtheHossyourodeinon · 24/11/2020 17:14

But most of those meant culturally christian, not religiously.

To get actual numbers, look at church attendance, which is minute.

TinaTurnercorner · 24/11/2020 17:17

*Woah christmas has been hijacked by Christians?!! Stop the press!

Tell the bloody faith people to get off our festival of consumerism, it’s our special day to over spend and focus on one upmanship.

If the Christians are offended, good. I've been offended all my life by Christians and Christianity, I hope they are bloody offended
But theres hardly any of them left, so who gives a fuck?

Cheers for that. You're full of the joys, aren't ya?

It would also have been interesting to see how long your post would have lasted, had it been about any other religion ...

For the people that are so offended by all things Christmas and all things Christian, are you offended by other religions and their holy days, or is the vitriol just reserved for Christianity?*

All the above yy, and lets see a similar thread when its Diwali/Hanukka etc and the RM decide to bring out stamps celebrating that. Lets see the ''respect'' for them, eh?Hmm

Gwenhwyfar · 24/11/2020 17:18

"To get actual numbers, look at church attendance, which is minute."

Nope. You can be a Christian who doesn't practise regularly.

It's irrelevant anyway as Christmas is celebrated by atheists and people of different religions.

almondfingers22 · 24/11/2020 17:19

Good, look forward to seeing them. I always like to get a nice religious type card too.

How the fuck do you know what they meant? Christianity is a religion. It’s not a culture. You don’t have to go to a place of worship to hold a faith. My friends are practising Buddhists, they never go anywhere near a temple.
andtheHossyourodeinon · 24/11/2020 17:22

Nope. You can be a Christian who doesn't practise regularly

You can't claim Xmas to be all about God and Jesus when you don't even go to church, so not nope.

It's irrelevant anyway as Christmas is celebrated by atheists and people of different religions

Literally the point.

Gwenhwyfar · 24/11/2020 17:24

I'm not! What are you on about?

VinylDetective · 24/11/2020 17:24

Of course you can. I’m an agnostic and confidently claim Christmas to be a religious festival.
