To be surprised that the Royal Mail Christmas stamps are all religious?

I thought for a change I'd get proper Christmas stamps this year. Didn't expect them to be all religious and no choice!

Is this usually what's on offer? I don't object personally, but I think most of those I send to won't care for a religious stamp.

I think you should read back what you had written. Christmas cards have nothing to do with Christ!!! 😂😂 Christmas is all about Jesus Christ, you don't believe in him, you don't celebrate Christmas. If you do you are a hypocrite. I don't celebrate Diwali because I don't believe in that religion

So 95% of the country are hypocrites? Bollocks to that. You can't try and take ownership of what is now a secular holiday at the same time as whining that we aren't giving your religion enough "respect".

If Islam was trying to insist they owned Christmas they'd get the same short shrift, but it doesn't happen. Muslim friends of mine celebrate Christmas actually, as do Jews, atheists, and Buddhists.

Tell you what, go and tell my muslim friends with the tree up already that Xmas is all about Christ and they are hypocrites. Dare ya!

Christmas is not owned by Christians. You can't have it, just by stamping your feet and shouting "It's about Jesus!". It's not, it's about SANTA.

Janegrey333 · 24/11/2020 14:22

I reject any cards with the mealy mouthed “Happy Holidays” or “Season’s Greetings” emblazoned in them or on them.

Janegrey333 · 24/11/2020 14:24

Santa means saint. Religious much? The irony.

It really is farcical. How depressing.

Christmas trees cannot be religious, because bringing decorated trees indoors is forbidden by God in the Bible - and presumably he will punish them accordingly.

Why? For me its more about the seasons rather than a fictional story. Flowers
Ihatefish · 24/11/2020 14:38

We live in a Christian country, by which I mean the state, public holidays, many traditions, laws etc are routed in Christianity. Most religions are largely a retelling of the same fundamental principles pasted into different stories to ease understanding:memorability etc. So it doesn’t really matter what religion it is, but for historical reasons much of Britain (or at least it’s structure is Christian). Get over it. Can’t be arsed to read through the thread to find the stupid twat of a sheep that’s said sky fairies though bound to be at least one who is congratulating themselves

QueenBlueberries · 24/11/2020 14:42

Millions of people celebrate Christmas and are from other faiths or no faith. Personally, as a Christian, I think that's brilliant.

The fact that marking the (symbolic) birth of Jesus is now celebrated by millions by sharing meals with family, people coming together, sharing gifts, showing good will, sharing with people with less means, with kindness, laughter, celebration, then in my mind, it's fantastic.

Reject them? So what, you send them back?
MeringueCloud · 24/11/2020 14:50

Special stamps issued this year shop.royalmail.com/special-stamp-issues includes James Bond, Star Trek, Chinese year of the ox and bugs. Not sure why issuing stamps with Mary and Jesus at Christmas is a problem . The Royal Mail issue plenty of different stamps for those who prefer not to use the stained glass window Mary and Jesus ones.

Have you even read the thread? It's been pointed out a million times that Christians plagiarised pagan celebrations and changed the name to "Christmas". The Bible never even mentions Jesus' date of birth. Do you celebrate Easter, which is a festival of the pagan goddess Ēostre?

Unfortunately I missed out on all of those. This is the first year I've ever wanted special stamps. I was hoping there would be some choice but there isn't. Would love winter-themed stamps.

@BigFiveMama

**It isn't. 95% of people who christmas couldn't give a flying fuck about Jesus. It's a secular holiday.

Why do you still call it Christmas then? Call it a New PS5 day if you don't give a flying .... and don't offend all the Christians.

But it was the Christians who took over the Pagan's celebrations of Saturnalia on 25 Dec, so surely if anyone should change anything, it should be Christians changing the 25 Dec date to something else?
ZoeCM · 24/11/2020 15:23

I have no problem whatsoever with the Christian stamps. But the posts about how the UK is a Christian country are confusing. Yes, the official state religion is Protestant Christianity, but in practical terms this is no longer a Christian country. Marital rape has been illegal since 1991, even though the Bible says women are the property of their husbands. Domestic violence is illegal. Slavery is illegal, even though the Bible says it's okay for a master to beat their slave to death. Divorcees are allowed to remarry. It's illegal to murder someone for being gay. It's no longer socially acceptable to refer to children of unmarried parents as "bastards".

To the poster who said Islam never gets criticised on MN - it does. Even in the last few weeks, there have been threads criticising Islam in the wake of the terrorist attacks in France (which I think is valuable, because no religion should be above reproach).

@bigfivemama

Do Christians actually get offended if people celebrate Christmas without the religious bits?

How about you mind your own business? How other people celebrate and what they call it has fuck all to do with you.

NOT ANYMORE. Which bit are you struggling so much with? Do you think anyone called Smith actually makes horseshoes all day?

Glad you're happy but we're not marking any such thing.

YellowPostItPad · 24/11/2020 15:33

OP could you use a non- Christmas stamp instead?

andtheHossyourodeinon · 24/11/2020 15:33

I'm waiting for someone to tell me what is so religious about Santa (the coca cola version), presents, plum pudding, yule logs, christmas trees, cards, mulled wine etc?
You know what is religious about Xmas? Church. Shame no-one actually goes!!

Absolutely nothing.

Yes I am doing that and adorning my envelopes with stickers instead. Smile

Christians seem convinced they invented altruism..
A midwinter festival has been documented in many cultures, probably stretching back to paleolithic times.
It's not too difficult to understand the themes.
The return of the light, a celebration to thank fuck we are alive, to share and be grateful, to celebrate life.
To claim that all that good feeling is about jesus is pretty pathetic.

I don't need a book to tell me not to kill people.

gottakeeponmovin · 24/11/2020 15:46

Why does everyone always deny that Christmas is a religious festival. Yes of course a lot of people celebrating don't give a shit about religion but they do know the holiday is about baby Jesus being born. Schools have nativity plays. Whether you believe or not is irrelevant - it exists as a big event because we are historically a Christian country and our holidays are based around Christian festivals (and yes they may have been pagan sometime ago but they've been Christian for a long, long time) - and whilst many don't practice it's still by far the biggest religion in the U.K. if your going to be offended by a stamp with Jesus on during Christmas you have some serious underlying issues. Just don't step foot in a garden Center because they have nativity displays everywhere

HmmSureJan · 24/11/2020 15:47
