To be surprised that the Royal Mail Christmas stamps are all religious?

I thought for a change I'd get proper Christmas stamps this year. Didn't expect them to be all religious and no choice!

Is this usually what's on offer? I don't object personally, but I think most of those I send to won't care for a religious stamp.

The insistence that Christmas is Christian my practise or history is nonsense though.

I’ve read some stupid comments on men, but this takes the Biscuit!

Janegrey333 · 24/11/2020 12:31

OP:

Christmas is a Christian celebration so having “religious” stamps makes perfect sense.

andtheHossyourodeinon · 24/11/2020 12:33

It isn't, we've covered this. It's secular in the main.

No it is not. You cannot have a secular CHRISTmas, by definition. Do take as much time as you need to think about it properly. Whether you have been “through” it or not is beside the point.

No. It. Isn’t.
speakout · 24/11/2020 12:40

ou cannot have a secular CHRISTmas, by definition.

But you claim a christian Easter ( Oestre)? Oestre is a pagan goddess.

You can't have it both ways.

andtheHossyourodeinon · 24/11/2020 12:44

yes you can. Just as you can have Easter without worshipping pagan fertility gods or the resurrection of Christ.
It's just the name, a hangover from when it was mainly a religious festival. Lots of things have names that are inaccurate. Do take as much time as you need to think about it properly. Smile

Rot. You would not be falling over yourself to deny Muslims their religious festivals, I’d wager.
yomommasmomma · 24/11/2020 12:56

If you don't believe in the Christ part of Christmas, why are you sending Christmas cards?!! Very hypocritical

andtheHossyourodeinon · 24/11/2020 12:57

It's not rot. Do Christians manage to celebrate Easter even though it's named for Oestre? If the answer is yes, you know your point about the name Christmas is "rot".

You would not be falling over yourself to deny Muslims their religious festivals, I’d wager

Who is being denied anything? For the small minority of people that celebrate Christmas as a religious festival, that is open to them. Far from being denied, they get to impose it on everyone else (see the stamps etc). And good luck to them.
We don't have to pretend it actually is a religous festival for anyone else though. You can't be that insecure in your religious beliefs, can you?

andtheHossyourodeinon · 24/11/2020 12:58

Christmas cards have nothing to do with Christ. Tell me how a picture of a penguin in a hat to Great Aunt Gladys saying "hoppy Christmas" is in any way religious?

yomommasmomma · 24/11/2020 13:06

I think you should read back what you had written. Christmas cards have nothing to do with Christ!!! 😂😂 Christmas is all about Jesus Christ, you don't believe in him, you don't celebrate Christmas. If you do you are a hypocrite. I don't celebrate Diwali because I don't believe in that religion.

Don't be daft. Christmas is a cultural as well as a religious thing.

Nonamesavail · 24/11/2020 13:14

@speakout

Christianity isn't just about personal choice though. It shapes the fabric of our society, controls woman's reproductive choices, underpins misogyny with its patriarchial model. Unelected church members create laws for our country, sit on ethics committes which decide medical treatment, all schools are legally obliged to provide religious indoctrination . As an atheist I am affected my christianity, it's not something I can opt out of.
100% agree.
Janegrey333 · 24/11/2020 13:16

The hypocrisy is hilarious. No one here would DARE to attack the Muslim faith or indeed any other faith - except Christianity.

Even your “Oh Gods”etc are essentially blasphemous but one even hears Muslims use the expression and others quite openly. It I s only Christianity that is fair game, it seems.

Just to add, I am not religious but I do recognise double standards when I see them.

Janegrey333 · 24/11/2020 13:17

We always do 'seasons greetings cards' nothing to do with 'christ'

There have been plenty threads here criticising Islam.

If I have family over, put up a tree, give presents and eat turkey 9n the 25th how is that hypocritical? Why do you care anyway?

I'd like "season's greetings" stamps to go with my cards.

@Wildswim

the Madonna and child iconography is not even inclusive of all Christians

What Christians is it not inclusive of??! All Christians believe Christ was born of the virgin Mary.

I'm a Protestant Christian and it's inclusive of me.

Protestants are usually against the iconography - the "graven images" mentioned in the second of the Ten Commandments.

Well they charge more for the Christmas ones and I'm too tight to pay the extra so plain stamps all round Shock
