What's happening with Aldis chicken?

I love Aldi, its my favourite supermarket and great for everything. However for the past year I've found their chicken really odd tasting.every single breast has the same white thick gristly strip through the middle, its really odd it's like it's been added to two separate pieces to hold it together?it seems pumped full of water too and despite cooking for correct time turns into inedible chewy wood tasting pieces every time.
Its frustrating as I'll now need to start shopping elsewhere for poultry.

All chicken portions seem to be spoiled in some way.
We only buy whole chickens to roast. Corn fed chickens from Sainsbury are quite good.

ItIsMyName · 23/11/2020 12:09

There was a recent report in the Indy that found Asda, Aldi & Lidl chicken have “white stripping disease” which is more fat in the breast due to the accelerated growth but it also affects other supermarkets too. (Google the report, 3rd September).
M&S and Waitrose have signed up to better welfare standards and their chicken is seen to be better.

keiratwiceknightly · 23/11/2020 12:18

Tesco free range chicken doesn't do this. Cost about £9 so cheaper than organic.

Whatwouldscullydo · 23/11/2020 12:20

That is interesting name

As I said everyones always saying its exactly the same meat as waitrose etc

But it clearly isn't..

Fairyliz · 23/11/2020 12:39

We buy from Tesco and have exactly the same problem. The chicken doesn’t seem to cook properly and goes all rubbery.

Twobrews · 23/11/2020 12:44

Supermarket chicken is all nasty IMO, M&S and Waitrose included.
I buy chicken from the butchers, it's more expensive but it tastes nice and isn't full of water so goes further.

kerkyra · 23/11/2020 12:47

I bought mini chicken fillets from the Co op at the weekend and they also had that thick white gristly strip on each one.
It took me ages to cut them off ( maybe you cant tell they're when you cook them, but wasnt going to risk it).

peakotter · 23/11/2020 12:47

We go to Aldi partly for their chicken, but only the free range stuff.

All battery chicken is pretty disgusting imo. Buy a whole free range one, cut off the breasts and roast the rest or throw in the slow cooker.

Facelikearustytractor · 23/11/2020 12:49

We make chlorination chicken with it

I think brined might taste nicer, or are you preparing your tastebuds in advance for the threatened post-Brexit American chicken? Grin[/quote]
Since the recipe of coronation chicken was concocted to mark an occasion, I only think it's fair we have one to mark the occasion of Brexit. Maybe have a nice watered down moonshine for the accompanying beverage and a side order of turnips, since that is probably all we can afford post Brexit.

zenasfuck · 23/11/2020 12:49

We had an Aldi chicken for lunch yesterday and I was surprised at how nice it tasted. Must have dropped lucky

People think because things are made or processed in the same factory they're the same quality, standard, recipe etc but that's not necessarily the case.

For example Charlie's chicken factory could process/package chicken for supermarket A and supermarket B. A could get all the plump chickens just packaged. B could get all the skinny chickens with the disease mentioned above, pumped full of water and whatever else to look bigger and juicier.

Like beans, all the big, soft beans and a small amount rich juice can be put into one set of tins and the same factory can put the smaller harder beans and a large amount of watered down sauce or a sauce made to a different recipe into another set of tins. One is Big Brand one is supermarket value brand. Then people say they're the same because Belindas Bean Factory made them both.

I’m shocked at all these comments I always buy chicken from Aldi and never had an issue, cooks fine tastes like chicken, isn’t rubbery. In fact I have some for my tea tonight.

Tescos on the other hand I will never buy meat from these days its the only place I avoid. The amount of times I’ve had to take it back the day of purchase, well in date because its off is unreal. I refuse to buy meat there any more I think Aldi’s is much better quality.

yearinyearout · 23/11/2020 12:59

I've had exactly the same issue with Sainsbury's chicken breast, and less frequently with Tesco. The majority of the supermarkets have theirs from the same supplier anyway (think it's called seven sisters) they feel really rubbery in texture. Lost count of the number of refunds I got from Sainsbury's

JaJaDingDong · 23/11/2020 12:59

Supermarket meat doesn't seem so cheap compared to butchers' meat once you've realised that a lot of the weight you're paying for in the supermarket meat is water.

Better to buy more expensive meat, that had a nicer life before becoming meat, but eat less of it.

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 23/11/2020 13:07

Disgusting really when you think it's lawful to actually pump shite into meat to make it weigh more! It's fraudulent and shameful really!
After reading this I have promised myself to stop buying supermarket meat altogether.

The worst chicken I've ever bought was chicken breasts from tesco. I took it out of the packaging and it was pissing a thick, slimy, pale yellowish, salty water from it as soon as I lifted it up. Literally so salty you could smell it was salty water. It also felt weird, I can't explain it properly but you know the grain of the meat, it was very raised. It was like a very mild version of tree bark or like fingerprints when you've been in water for a long time. Rough and slimy at the same time. So gross. I hate shopping at tesco for many reasons but if I have to I never buy chicken breasts.
JaJaDingDong · 23/11/2020 13:08

I'm certainly going to ditch supermarket meat once it starts coming from America!

YouveGotMeWhosGotYou · 23/11/2020 13:11

Leave them the fuck alone, they have shit lives and worse deaths.

ElsieMc · 23/11/2020 13:13

I avoid supermarket chicken generally but bought some fillets from M and S last week and everyone commented how nice they were.

I usually buy from our local butchers who are pricey. But during lockdown they changed supplier and they were absolutely awful, water pouring out of them when cooked. I went in and complained and they provided me with some free meat of a similar price. When I went back for a batch for a curry, they gave me a free breast first to make sure it wasn't disgusting! What is happening to chicken?

Ugzbugz · 23/11/2020 13:14

Try corn fed and organic etc, much more expensive but so much better tasting, not pumped full of shit and water so is more filling. All that cheap meat is from animals not kept and fed in the greatest condition 🤮

PinkiOcelot · 23/11/2020 13:14

Ahhh I thought it was just me. I don’t often shop at Aldi (nothing against it, they just don’t deliver) but the last time I popped in I bought the big pack of chicken breasts. I thought they had a funny taste and a funny texture. Wouldn’t buy them again.

Carpetflowers · 23/11/2020 13:26

I had chicken breast yesterday from M&S and one them had a ‘woody’ area, the meat feels firm when cutting and is still hard when cooked. Happened quite a few times from Iceland chicken and now I’ve found the same issue with M&S. wasn’t an issue until just over a year ago.

stopringingme · 23/11/2020 13:31

I only buy chicken from M&S - it is the best tasting chicken and it is not overly expensive.
I do not buy any meat from Tesco as I found it really bad quality.

GameSetMatch · 23/11/2020 13:34

When you’re spending under £5 for a whole chicken what do you expect? You can’t breed and grow decent chickens and then sell them at ridiculous prices. It’s such a cruel industry, free range and organic are tastier and more humane, give them a try.
