What's happening with Aldis chicken?

I love Aldi, its my favourite supermarket and great for everything. However for the past year I've found their chicken really odd tasting.every single breast has the same white thick gristly strip through the middle, its really odd it's like it's been added to two separate pieces to hold it together?it seems pumped full of water too and despite cooking for correct time turns into inedible chewy wood tasting pieces every time.
Its frustrating as I'll now need to start shopping elsewhere for poultry.

I agree, I've found exactly the same thing and have had to start buying it elsewhere. The amount of water that comes out is crazy!

Whatwouldscullydo · 23/11/2020 10:28

Lidl and aldi chicken has always tasted odd.

Not nice at all

helloxhristmas · 23/11/2020 10:32

Agree with @Whatwouldscullydo

Mamascoven · 23/11/2020 10:49

Yes it does. Me and dh said it tasted odd the last time we had it. I dont go there anymore, stick to morrisons now.

ErickBroch · 23/11/2020 10:59

I love Aldi and shop there every week but HATE their chicken. It's awful. Their dark meats are great but chicken is bad.

SpillingTheTea · 23/11/2020 11:00

I like Aldi but not their meat. Absolutely minging.
It went off so quick as well!

Boxofpinot · 23/11/2020 11:00

I always buy aldi chicken and I've not had any issues, I'm cooking one tonight so I will pay more attention and report back this evening!! 😂

SimplyRadishing · 23/11/2020 11:03

Does anyone know of any supermarket chicken that isn't pumped with water it drives me crazy. I would just like to be able to grill or fry chicken rather than poach/boil it Confused

thenightsky · 23/11/2020 11:06

@SimplyRadishing Only Waitrose, but its a while since I bought any so can't say if its still the case. Tesco's is soaking wet too.

Along the same lines, Lidl frozen broccoli has so much ice around each piece, a 1kg bag only weighs 600g when I microwaved all the ice off it.

LondonlovesLola · 23/11/2020 11:08

I also like Aldi but NOT for their meat or chilled meals. The one and only time I bought chicken it was slimy, watery and gross. Never again.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 23/11/2020 11:10

I stopped buying Chicken from aldi last year as it just seemed to go off so quickly.

drumst1ck · 23/11/2020 11:16

Bought an Aldi chicken to roast the other day, I usually shop at Tesco and have no issues with their chickens. The Aldi one barely tasted of anything and felt so much more watery! I think I'll avoid from now on!

MadeleineMaxwell · 23/11/2020 11:25

I had the exact same issue with Sainsbo's chicken - just disgusting, chewy, hard, sometimes inedible. I stopped buying it and get their turkey instead, or buy chicken from the local butcher, which is fine. Could be some supermarket supply chain thing, who knows?

SquishSquashSqueeze · 23/11/2020 11:28

What do you expect from meat that price? Not being funny, genuinely wondering.

Your local butcher will be more costly, but in turn you get more, better quality meat for your money so you need to buy less.

Whatwouldscullydo · 23/11/2020 11:29

But apparently its exactly the same stuff that waitrose sell

CoffeeandCroissant · 23/11/2020 11:29

Yes, I had the same experience with odd tasting chicken from Lidl. Have never bought chicken from Aldi, but in Scotland their Scottish 28 day aged steaks are pretty good for a supermarket steak.

On the whole I don't really buy much meat from Aldi and Lidl even though most of it is sourced from Scotland, they are good for lots of other things though.

Facelikearustytractor · 23/11/2020 11:32

We usually buy either the free range whole chicken or boneless thighs. Never tried the breast meat. I find the thighs are fine, the whole chicken is OK, but can taste a bit odd if reheated (we chuck it in a curry, so it's fine). It wouldn't last the test as a Mumsnet chicken, which last five meals of course. The frozen chicken for sandwiches is dog rough, possibly 15% chicken! Still buy it sometimes though as I can't be bothered to go elsewhere Blush We make chlorination chicken with it, so again don't taste much because of the curry powder.

I find most places the chicken isn't great unless it's free range - from Sainsburys to Lidl. I like Aldi free range eggs, much nicer than Asda ones, who also discontinued my favourite brand Sad

ZombieAttack · 23/11/2020 11:35

Isn’t it all the same? I’m sure a poster once said it’s all the same chicken but just gets a different label. Is this true? Someone who works in a chicken factory tell me please!

thecakebadge · 23/11/2020 11:35

This is one of the things that really put me off chicken. Only ones that don't do this are Waitrose or Sainsbury's organic which cost about £10 for 4 chicken breasts, not particularly affordable for most people. I prefer to use Quorn pieces or make a veggie version (I still eat some other meat but can't stand shit chicken)

Facelikearustytractor · 23/11/2020 11:35

I also freeze all my meat when I do my weekly shop, so don't have issues with meat going off. I had it in most shops I got meat from (I've shopped at them all) and did it before I shopped at Aldi, so it's just automatic now.

MadeleineMaxwell · 23/11/2020 11:36

We make chlorination chicken

Grin Good one!

AntsInPenzance · 23/11/2020 11:40

I've tried chicken from Tesco, Sainsbury's and a good local butcher; can't say I can taste any difference, and since the butcher's was twice as expensive, I'll just stick to supermarket chicken.

Sausages have to be butcher's.

Lunariagal · 23/11/2020 11:42

Saw a documentary yonks ago which said they add enzymes to chicken to make it absorb water and then process it so that added water is absorbed. If there's a lit of water coming out, thats how it got in. They do it to increase the weight.

BlankTimes · 23/11/2020 11:45

@Facelikearustytractor

We make chlorination chicken with it

I think brined might taste nicer, or are you preparing your tastebuds in advance for the threatened post-Brexit American chicken? Grin

CoffeeandCroissant · 23/11/2020 11:46

Only ones that don't do this are Waitrose or Sainsbury's organic which cost about £10 for 4 chicken breasts

Buy thighs instead, much cheaper and much tastier, so it's win win. Boneless, skinless free range thighs from Sainsbury's are about £4 for a pack of 4, so less than half the price of those breasts.
