Is Jo Malone perfume worth it?

fancyginglass · 22/11/2020 19:22

I received some Jo Malone inspired wax melts and was thinking that my children could club together get me some perfume at Christmas. Is it worth it? If any of you have a Jo Malone perfume could you recommend one? I like clean fresh fragrances.

I love Wild Bluebell. It’s fresh and clean smelling and on me lasts well. It smells nothing like bluebells but is in my opinion beautiful . I also really like peony and suede blush and dark amber and ginger Lily. That lasts well too. For me they’re worth it. I really love the bluebell and amber and ginger Lily combined .

No!! It's crap and owned by Estée Lauder!

Last month me and a friend went to their store in our city and tried about 20 scents each. About an hour later we concluded they all smelt like lavatory spray!

Really, it's the biggest con. They have the amazing looking stores, packaging and sophisticated looking sales assistants but you'll get better quality products in M&S.

I would also recommend Miller Harris. Their January sale is fab

I used JM fragrances for years, mostly Pomegranate Noir, 154 and Pear and Freesia. They were lovely back in the day and people would comment on how nice they smelled then, over the years, the staying power and scent diminished. If I want a JM fragrance now I get the Perfume Parlour version as they last longer but my every day fragrance is now Miller Harris

There's a "Jo Loves" rose based scent that I love - I've promised myself I'll treat myself when I achieve a certain target.

In the meantime - Aldi's scarlet rose for around £5 is pretty good. May not be quite as long lasting, but I can still detect the scent at the end of the day.

I take my hat off to the Jo Malone marketing department. I'm not a great fan but my mum and sister are so I am fairly often in their boutiques to buy gifts for them. The last time I was there they were running a big promotion to encourage 'layering' their fragrances to create a signature scent.

So somehow, they have managed not only to charge more per millilitre for cologne than most mid-range perfume houses charge for eau de toilette (and almost as much as eau de parfum) but also to persuade their customers to make up for the lack of complexity and longevity in the product by buying twice as much. Absolutely extraordinary.

To answer your question, OP, the product itself is not good value for money so you have to decide for yourself if the fragrances and overall experience of buying from JM is worth the ticket price. The PP dupes that several others have mentioned are excellent.

Just avoid the Pomegranate noir. It's less popular now but a few years ago everyone seemed to be wearing it. The Burnt orange one is lovely and the lime and basil

MonkeyBidness · 23/11/2020 12:59

They give me spots where I spray it. Nice smell but acne on my chest is not my bag these days.

MatildaTheCat · 23/11/2020 13:09

I love the lime basil one but read about a Superdrug version which is £5. I now have that in my gym locker bag and it’s virtually indistinguishable.

merlotormalbec · 23/11/2020 13:31

My MIL brought me the English pear and Freesia a few years ago and I've been wearing it ever since. it's beautiful

Eaumyword · 23/11/2020 14:00

10+ years ago, I wore nothing else. I stopped wearing JM a few years ago as I got fed up with the lack of scent lasting, the poor online customer service and their utter tightness in store in ever providing samples even with purchases - how do you know if you like a new scent and it agrees with your skin if you can't try it?!
I tend to use Shay and Blue now for lovely scent. Honestly, they beat JM hands down for lovely long lasting scents, great customer service and a great small company ethic. Half the price too!

fancyginglass · 23/11/2020 14:23

Thanks everyone - I've ordered some from the Perfume Parlour - might as well start cheap!

I love JM, it’s been my perfume for almost 4 years now. They do a testing experience in my local JM where you get a hand massage, Prosecco & cookies while you try fragrances on your skin. I love velvet rose & oud - it’s quite pricey at 140 for a bottle but it lasts me from Christmas to Christmas. I love the wrapping and free gifts and samples too

The candles are a waste though - try Rathbournes for luxurious scented candles

Shmithecat2 · 23/11/2020 14:31

I love them and don't particularly care who 'owns' the brand. I wear Peony and Blush Suede mostly, but also like Earl Grey and Cucumber, Blackberry and Bay, and they also did a limited edition called Osmanthus Blossom which was beautiful. I fly from T5 on a regular basis so tend to stock up in Duty Free. The Perfume Parlour are good dupes, but I like buying the real thing as it feels like a proper treat.

BuntyBonus · 23/11/2020 14:31

A friend of mine wears JM Earl grey and cucumber and she smells absolutely divine. It’s out of my price range but I did try some in the shop and it didn’t smell half as nice on me. So it’s definitely worth trying them to see how they smell on your skin.

MaMaLa321 · 23/11/2020 14:39

I find that they wear off very quickly, so, no, even though the scents are lovely, I don't find them worthwhile.

lioncitygirl · 23/11/2020 14:42

No - sorry.

SlovakPrincess · 23/11/2020 14:42

Complete rip off.

Bland, dull, weak, uncomplicated and too expensive for what it is.

FudgeDrudge · 23/11/2020 14:44

Primark do some very good dupes, I’ve read on MN that they are nicer than the real deal

They're not, in the slightest. Sometimes you do get what you pay for.

littleburn · 23/11/2020 15:08

I think they're lovely if you like natural, simple scents. But they are pricey and actually quite weak - cologne rather than perfume - and don't last that long on my skin. I've switched to the Perfume Parlour dupes for Orange Blossom and Lime, Basil and Mandarin and they're lovely. Last longer and so much cheaper!

HOkieCOkie · 23/11/2020 15:09

Yeah I think it’s lovely. I have a lime basil mini I love it

kittykat35 · 23/11/2020 15:12

Peony and blush suede is my daytime scent...I love it!! It's so fresh

I use Armani "Elle" as my going out scent I love that too!!

Therealjudgejudy · 23/11/2020 15:13

I buy my mum a JM perfume for every birthday and Christmas. I just bought Earl grey and cucumber as one of her Christmas gifts this year. Shes totally worth itSmile

millymae · 23/11/2020 15:21

My advice is choose the smallest size cologne and match it with the body cream. I love mimosa and cardamom and often just use the body cream on its own day to day.

Ffsseriously · 23/11/2020 15:27

How on earth did you manage to order anything from the perfume parlour? I just went on there (on my phone) it was so busy telling me what Julie had bought(I dont care). Showing fancy videos of perfume bottles(I know what they look like), that it was so slow to be unusable Angry.
