Or even 72 hours. Aibu to think the persons mind frame won’t change that quickly? So surely they are either better off not admitted or admitted for a couple of weeks?

It's usually for assessment only, it might be deemed after that period that they do not need hospitalisation.

nosswith · 22/11/2020 16:41

Respite for the family perhaps?

EKGEMS · 22/11/2020 16:41

Some people can be stabilized in a short amount of time and followed up as an outpatient. With mental health resources so thin hospitalization for months is a waste unless it's a person who is severely ill and needs to be placed permanently in a mental health facility.

ineedsun · 22/11/2020 16:43

Very much depends.

The 72 hours may well be the time limit of a specific section.

Sometimes it's enough time for someone to come down for whatever substance they've taken.

The crisis situation might have passed.

It might be enough time to assess and decide they need to be there longer

For assessment, medication review, respite, waiting for care to be sorted, need quiet time.

lyralalala · 22/11/2020 16:44

To keep them safe from immediate harm and to asses what help or services they need going forward.

chickenyhead · 22/11/2020 17:30

To assess their needs for further intervention.

Yes but I would imagine it take people longer to stabilise.
