To think Rebekah Vardy has no chance?

Her case hinges on claiming someone has somehow hacked her account; be that someone she employs or someone who has somehow done it at random. Colleen Rooney very, very deliberately (and now infamously) stated ‘It’s... Rebekah Vardy’s account’.

She’s suing for libel, yet she hasn’t been personally accused. That wording was not an accident. Surely unless she can somehow prove that the fake stories were not accessed via her account, she has no case?

@DilysPrice

Interesting the effect that Twitter and the web in general can have on the “what would the average person think” element of a libel case.

Back in the dark ages when the Spectator said “isn’t it shocking that all these totally untrue rumours are circulating about John Major shagging the cook” the lawyers had to go through a whole argument to demonstrate that most readers would think “Aha! Major is definitely shagging the cook but the Spectator are covering their backs”

Nowadays presumably Vardy’s lawyers can produce analysis showing 3 million tweets and blog posts by members of the general public in the 24 hours after CR’s big reveal, of which only 0.13% mention the possibility that someone other than RV was responsible for the leak.

Likewise that guy libelled by by Sally “innocent face” Bercow. The effect of a given libel is suddenly much more easy to evidence.

I agree. It's very interesting. It was clear to everyone what the general opinion on the internet was so it was worrying that people thought that that people should be allowed to do that with a "carefully" chosen word!

I'm stunned that people thought that CR would have sought legal advice before posting her initial statement. It was extremely clear that she hadn't.

Colleen was very stupid. She could have unfollowed RV on all social media and then posted a similar statement but said that she wasn't accusing RV herself in any way.....and the trolls and internet jury would have still came to the same conclusion that it was RV herself (especially when the media picked up on the fact that she unfollowed her on everything).

@user1481840227 Very sensible CR could have done with your advice before her statement. Grin
I haven't RTFT I'll catch up.

The whole thing is quite boggling to watch.

There was a very easy, simple and obvious way to ensure people (friends or otherwise) didn’t go to the press with titbits from your ‘private’ life, but it seems to have completely eluded CR.

Also amusing that someone was basically deifying CR on the basis of keeping her kids in check at an airport. Grin

Who knew that’s all it takes to be a saint, and an example to all of motherhood??

Vardy, it appears, is even worse.

The surprising thing about CR posting her statement is that it seems to be such a departure for people with her lifestyle and her fame to do anything public in a unilateral manner. They are so used to seeking advice; having people shape their public statements - check out what's in their best interests financially and legally, that to do something in such a girl-next-door way seems weird. Her personality doesn't seem the kind to be laying down the law, making massive public statements and settling scores in public.

I guess it's a well-known gambit for catching people out - posting comments just to their account - seeing if mates get told about them. But you'd have to be very careless to think you could rubbish a name of another public figure and not incur risks: risks that need to be weighed and calculated.
Would have thought PR advisors would constantly be starting meetings with CR by saying: ' So what are we expecting to come up in the press, this week? Something about Wayne's contract? Lockdown and celebrity families?'. I wonder if CR thought she'd go it alone and keep little plan just to herself, or if she told her PR ( who you'd think would tell Legal about the little ploy).

PaperTowels · 28/11/2020 09:54

So today CR apparently has a mole in Vardy's camp.

I wonder if CR is being "clever" again? That went so well last time!

prh47bridge · 28/11/2020 11:06

RV might try, through her lawyers, to paint a picture of CR telling her friends things

Unless she has evidence of CR telling her friends the specific stories involved in this case that is unlikely to help her.

So today CR apparently has a mole in Vardy's camp

If she genuinely has a witness who can give evidence that RV leaked the stories or that it happened with RV's knowledge and consent that would be a killer blow. However, this is just "sources" talking to the press. We don't know if it is real.

As much as I'd love their money I'd hate to live their life.

TurquoiseDress · 28/11/2020 11:38

I will freely admit to be fascinated by all of this and keenly watching for updates!Grin

Team Colleen all the way!

@EmeraldShamrock

As much as I'd love their money I'd hate to live their life.
They've chosen how to live their lives, though. They could have stayed low key, but no! Gotta have the attention.
PrincessNutNut · 28/11/2020 11:45

To be fair, if I had the means to make a shed load of money by writing guff in the papers, grinning on TV and photographing my Christmas tree, I'd do it (wouldn't involve my kids or promote anything unethical). If someone offered me the chance to sell out, I'd sell out so fast.

PaperTowels · 28/11/2020 14:24

Ha ha, me too! But you've got to take the rolls too...

Anyway, I don't reckon that CR's got a slam dunk in the form of a mole. I think, if it comes from her directly or indirectly, that she's trying to scare Vardy into a settlement. Because why would you let Vardy know? You'd just keep quiet until she'd refused a settlement, it was headed back to court and you had to disclose your evidence to the other side, if you were so sure it provided the proof you needed.

Coleen Rooney must be getting upset at the prospect of her husband managing his team next season when they are playing Accrington Stanley, which looks likely.
