Victorian tiles? Yes or no?

Hi,

Being a bit cheeky posting here, but doing it for the greater traffic.

Is this nice or not? (See attachment)

Part of me loves the Victorian aspect
And the other half thinks that it might look nice now but in a couple of years will look old...but not in a charming way.

Does anyone have these tiles? Are they easy to keep clean etc.

They are for the hallway. Should I just get larger tiles?

Thanks all

@laidbacklife

If you like them, leave them. Why put yourself through the cost and hassle of changing sth you like? Also, for future sales, nothing is to 'everyone's taste' so you should keep the parts of the house you like intact.
The OP is thinking of installing them. They aren’t already in the house.
pepperaunt · 19/11/2020 17:03

I’m so jealous! Our builder uncovered the original Victorian tiles in our hallway but they were in such bad shape that it would have been too expensive to replace them.

Laiste · 19/11/2020 17:03

Limestone/marble sounds lovely! (add this to my own painfully long list of ideas)

Can you not seal it? The limestone?

Have you looked at the range of high quality vinyl flooring which looks like victorian/georgian tilling?

Toddlerteaplease · 19/11/2020 17:05

They look more modern than Victorian.

JillofTrades · 19/11/2020 17:05

Beautiful but they somehow look like bathroom tiles.

LemonsYellow · 19/11/2020 17:05

Can you post a picture of the sort of house it is? People might be able to give better suggestions of what would look right.

I live in a Victorian house that went through some very unsympathetic renovations during the 1970's. I've been trying to restore the original features for years!

I went for parquet LVT in my hall/kitchen, but had Victorian tiles laid on my front path. I love them, do it!!!

Yes, definitely.

I'd maybe choose some with a bit more dark colour, less white.

AintOverUntilTheCatLadySings · 19/11/2020 17:08

They're lovely but I'd think twice about getting white tiles for a hallway floor

Laiste · 19/11/2020 17:08

What shape/size is your hallway OP?

We have an old parquet floor hidden under a hideous cheap clicky floor (put down in the 90s.) in the dinning room (off the hall). I keep feeling i should be trying to revive that in the name of keeping original features but a) it goes round quite a big now nonexistent fireplace so isn't really complete, and b) ... well ... i just don't like it ! bilbodog · 19/11/2020 17:09

If its a 1920s house what other features does your hallway have? Stained glass or not, dado rails? Are the doors wood or painted? I think some 1920s houses had lovely wooden floors - so you could look at karndean herringbone ?

PurBal · 19/11/2020 17:09

Love them. We have a few, scrub once a year and steam mop the rest of the time.

But the OP isn’t in a Victorian house, that’s the issue.
EL1984 · 19/11/2020 17:11

Love the first option with the small tiles or parquet flooring. The large tiles look a bit dated.

Owlbucket · 19/11/2020 17:24

Oh yes that’s my worry, that they might look a bit bathroomy. I’ve seen too many Inspiration pictures with them in the bathroom, which worry me.

Nothing left of the original features unfortunately, I’m trying my best to reinstate some features eg parquet in rest of the house and dido rail etc.

The hallway is just confusing me. I wish I could add colour, but husband is quite insistent on white in order to “brighten” the house.

Hallway is quite wide (not thin and narrow). One big square really.

I think you have to be careful because some designs have become popular and are everywhere.
I think the smaller tiles look much nicer

I love your first picture and the one posted by DappledThings.

The larger black and white tile patterns are very bathroomy especially at the moment. I think a border and smaller tiles make it more hallway

boboroll · 19/11/2020 17:52

Those are lovely @Pogmaasal

I don't like the modern ones particularly the fake moorish ones as they are a bit crushed velvet sofa.

Pogmaasal · 19/11/2020 17:56

I tend to agree @boboroll

JonHammIsMyJamm · 19/11/2020 18:00
@thecatneuterer oh haha! I saw them as country Manor House look! I must be deluded then 🙈
That style is seen in Georgian Manor House hallways but it only really works if the room is really spacious for the scale to work and the tiles are good quality marble.

Owlbucket · 19/11/2020 18:01

@boboroll @Pogmaasal what do you mean by modern.

For me looking at the picture the smaller just looks...smaller and the bigger looks bigger?

Don’t want anything velvet crushed sofa! Are the original pictures in my OP that?

That smaller, harlequin style is much nicer and more appropriate for average sized UK homes.
Owlbucket · 19/11/2020 18:02

@JonHammIsMyJamm yes I agree, I do love the look of larger limestone like tiles with the black insert. However limestone not so ideal for hallway...

SwimmingOnEggshells · 19/11/2020 18:05

Be very careful with encaustic tiles. I have have them and they're stunning but they weren't properly sealed and they're permanently dirty Envy it drives me bananas.

White will also show up dirt very easily so I'd avoid.

gnomeisland · 19/11/2020 18:05

Presumably if your DH is insisting on white tiles in the hallway then he will also be the one cleaning them?
I do love the tiles in your OP but white on a hall floor?
