Victorian tiles? Yes or no?

Hi,

Being a bit cheeky posting here, but doing it for the greater traffic.

Is this nice or not? (See attachment)

Part of me loves the Victorian aspect
And the other half thinks that it might look nice now but in a couple of years will look old...but not in a charming way.

Does anyone have these tiles? Are they easy to keep clean etc.

They are for the hallway. Should I just get larger tiles?

Thanks all

It depends on the style of your house. Victorian or very, very early Edwardian would be OK.
The second picture you posted looks very wrong to me.

Owlbucket · 19/11/2020 16:04

@JonHammIsMyJamm oh dear B and Q is not the look I’m going for!

I totally agree that a more colourful pattern would be lovely. I adore those Minton tiles in colourful rich patterns of red, green etc. But unfortunately those tiles reproduction are way out of my budget and also my husband unfortunately has a monochrome colour palette...so trying my best here! But don’t know whether it’s just going for something more simple and traditional

My style is very classic and traditional generally....

First ones in style. But I wouldn't go for white - show the dirt especially in a hall. I'd go for something that hides the dirt a bit more. Just had white put in the bathroom and really regret it!

thecatneuterer · 19/11/2020 16:15

I love them, but I hate normal (as the OP says 'classic') bathroom type tiles in hallways.

Owlbucket · 19/11/2020 16:20

@thecatneuterer wait which one is bathroomy?

Sometimes I worry the Victorian ones in my OP is a bit bathroomy...

Comefromaway · 19/11/2020 16:22

The first picture is not bathrooms.

The 2nd larger tiles are.

thecatneuterer · 19/11/2020 16:23

OP - the big tiles with the diamond bit in the middle - the photo you posted that had a cat in it. Very B&Q bathroom.

VestaTilley · 19/11/2020 16:23

They look amazing! Get them.

Owlbucket · 19/11/2020 16:38

@thecatneuterer oh haha! I saw them as country Manor House look! I must be deluded then 🙈

Bluntness100 · 19/11/2020 16:43

I really like the ones in your op. I’m not a fan of any of the others posted.

I dont think the ones you have posted look traditional - see the link above. If you put more traditional ones then they wont ‘date’, how could they if they are like the originals?

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 19/11/2020 16:48

It's fab Smile

LemonsYellow · 19/11/2020 16:48

I have original Victorian hallway tiles, very like the ones @bilbodog posted.

I’m not sure they would look right in a 1920s house, though.

CottonSock · 19/11/2020 16:50

Don't get white!

lidoshuffle · 19/11/2020 16:53

They are beautiful, but would have been really old fashioned when the house was built. It would be like us building a new house and putting 1990's features in it.

Comefromaway · 19/11/2020 16:56

Where I live people were still definitely putting Minton etc tiles in houses in the 1920s and 1930s. (But the Minton factory was local).

Owlbucket · 19/11/2020 16:56

@bilbodog oh those are sooooo gorgeous!! I love them. But way out of my budget and unfortunately won’t suit my husband’s monochrome taste

OP posts:
MarieIVanArkleStinks · 19/11/2020 16:56

I'm torn between the ones bilbodog posted and the black and white chequerboard style laid at a 'diamond' angle.

Owlbucket · 19/11/2020 16:57

@lidoshuffle yes that’s what I worry about! I think my MIL will be so perplexed to see them in my hallway thinking they are so old fashioned! But for me they feel fresh and nostalgic

OP posts:
Owlbucket · 19/11/2020 16:58

@Comefromaway secretly I’m sooo jealous for those houses! Haha. I wish I had colourful original Minton tiles!

OP posts:
Laiste · 19/11/2020 16:58

Oh OP i empathise. We have to redecorate a hall and renovate/age a stair case and i'm sick of googling for ideas! Wooden floor/tile floor/carpet floor/wooden stair treads/carpet treads/stripey carpet/plain carpet/painted stairs/stained stairs/half stained and half carpet/stained banisters/painted banisters/metal banisters - what matches the house - what will be easy to clean - what will bounce light - what will last? aaaaarrrrrgggghhhh.

My only advice on your pics - I love the white tiles but would be wary of the grouting going dark in a high traffic area. Would you still like the look if that happens? Plus being a bit slippery if they got wet?

Good luck! Grin

laidbacklife · 19/11/2020 16:59

If you like them, leave them. Why put yourself through the cost and hassle of changing sth you like? Also, for future sales, nothing is to 'everyone's taste' so you should keep the parts of the house you like intact.

Owlbucket · 19/11/2020 17:00

@Laiste you actually sound sooo much like me! I’ve done too much research now I’m confused.

I was originally going to go for marble/limestone and stopped due to finding out its porous and not ideal for hallway.

SlopesOff · 19/11/2020 17:01

We have a size in between those, 80's ones in our bathroom, so anything larger than the original Victorian ones would be too big for a hall. The large ones also look like 90's kitchen flooring.

I love original Victorian tiled halls, and steps to front doors even though they are as slippery as hell.
