To think Prince Charles .....

Should have just been allowed to marry camilla in the 80s ?

Ok ok . I'm guilty of watching the crown . I'm no royalist by any stretch !

But it was so obvious that Charles had found his "one " back in the 70s .
Why couldn't he just be allowed to marry her when it was so clear he loved her and only her ?

Poor Diana . And actually- poor Charles.

That family had already made an inordinate amount of utter fuck ups - so why did it matter so much that they stopped Charles marrying camilla in those early days ? Clearly their love stood the test of time plus the interference of the family . !

YABU simply for watching The Crown and decided that it’s fact. It’s very entertaining, but it’s really not a history textbook!

Because Camilla wasn't a virgin and it wouldn't do for the queen/mother of the heir to have a 'reputation' (and, implied by The Crown, there was a suggestion that she couldn't be trusted to be faithful to Charles).

Given that Charles' wife would be the mother of a future monarch it was essential that there was no doubt about parentage.

Also, despite the airbrushing, she wasn't the only mistress back then.

The great enduring love story always struck me as a bit of an invention.

Total speculation, but I think the virgin thing has been seriously overplayed. My guess is that they didn't think she'd be good at the job. As a young woman, they might have been correct.

It seems obvious in hindsight that Diana wasn't cut out for it either, but then hindsight is 20/20.

I know we’re never supposed to feel sorry for privileged royals, but it must actually suck Big Time to not be allowed to spend the rest of your life with the person you love.

We all just take it for granted.

And then being matched with someone you don’t actually love, is of course doomed to fail.

Yes, I feel sorry for all of them on that front.

Eh? The 80’s? She married her husband in 1973 so wasn’t really on the cards. He might have been in love with her but she was definitely in love with Andrew Parker Bowles (as was Princess Anne) and she might have lived happily ever after with him if he hadn’t shagged every Thomasina, Richenda and Harriet. Maybe Charlie looked like an interesting diversion but he wasn’t on the cards for her before her husband let her down so badly. No idea what fiction Netflix have dreamt up, I don’t watch it.
