East facing garden what time do you lose sun?

We have been looking for houses for ages and found a perfect house. Only problem is the garden is east-south-east facing. It’s not long either, but is wider than the house. Will the fact it’s a bit south east facing Male a difference? Will it get any afternoon sun? What time do you lose sun in yours?

Depends on time of year. Much earlier, though. On the plus side we get lovely morning sun!

Our garden is bang in the middle of both facing - no idea the technical term for that but we usually end up going through to the front garden around 2-3pm in summer.

We have this garden, it's more SE than east.I dithered for ages about buying it and did some drive bys to see where the sun was during the day..but in the end it's fine. We have sun till about 4/5 in parts of it on a sunny evening. Then it's around the front. The kitchen is at the back so in the morning is lovely and bright. Hope that helps.

About 4/5 in the summer

My front garden faces ESE. We get sun from dawn to mid-afternoon, maybe a bit later in high summer.

We're at the top of a hill though, so no buildings in the way.

We also get lovely sunrises to watch.

East here. We get sun from dawn to 5pm in most of the garden. We get until sunset at the bottom however as our garden is long so the house only shades the top section

thsbks, do you think the slight south angle would make a difference? Semi detached as well. I’m terrible for working out where sunlight would be.

About 3pm. When it's hot that's a good thing because it means the garden cools enough late afternoon. On the south side boundary we grow lovely flowers. But grow nothing on the north side.

Do you think losing sun by 3pm is a problem with young children? Looks like from shadow calculators it would completely lose sun by 4pm in summer and get evening from 6.30-8 in a strip where they currently have garden furniture. It’s such a shame as the house is so lovely, trying to work out if I could live with it and any work arounds. The front garden is quite big and would get sun a bit later.

It really depends on how the sun moves round the property. My house is east- west. So the sun rises over the back garden, moves round to the south which is to the side of my garden and finishes at the front. So every part of the garden gets sun at some point during the day. We don't lose the sun completely until 7.30ish in the back during the summer months. Then it will be in the front garden for a bit longer (or hit the very bottom of the back garden).

It really depends on the size of the garden, fences, trees and surrounding houses too - our area is quite open so we aren't shaded by other houses and trees etc.

It will depend on your surroundings and the size of your garden, we're facing SE at the back so the sun's on the garden from fairly early until late afternoon in Summer. I can squeeze more by putting the table and chairs further down the garden. It does mean that the sitting room at the front is wonderfully cool in the unbearable Summer days as it only gets the tail end of the sun in the evening.

Is this in the UK? How much sun do we get anyway?

I know everyone has different wishes for a house but this seems a bit OTT - if you proceed on the basis that you can't rely on any sunshine at all you won't be disappointed.

My garden is south east facing and in the height of summer we get sun until about 6:30pm in the most easterly corner.

Update for anyone interested. We bought the house and have had the summer in it. We got sun until 5pm until September, and then get sun in part of the garden for a bit in the evening too. The front garden gets sun later. It’s perfectly fine for us, it was even too hot some days so had to put a sun shade up!

@Chasingpandas thanks for updating us! We are at the same decision point and this is really helpful.

It depends on the surroundings. We have a south facing garden but then one unfortunately places tree two doors down means we lose sun in the late afternoon in the summer.

Mine is SSE facing, starts to get shaded by the neighbour's fence after midday (my garden is TINY though otherwise I would notice this less) and probably loses most of the sunlight by 5pm. But it always feels very light and honestly the full sun is a bit intense for me in the summer anyway!
