I always bought flat leather boots with a good grippy sole.Almost knew high with a riding boot look.Even last year I had several compliments on how nice they were.I need to replace them and don't want to look like mutton dressed as lamb now I'm 54.
I walk everywhere and live in a town/countryside.I just need something comfy and stylish for colder snowy or wet days.
Where do MN ers buy boots. My DS suggested wellies!

Ariat country boots

I LOVE winter boots, I'm only sad that where I live it almost never snows as for some reason I just adore winter boots the chunkier / furrier the lining the better. I have some Timbaland, some Sorel, and some Celtic & Co which are all very much 'winter' boots - sheepskin lining etc. Not really that many occasions where I live (and in a city) that it's really cold enough / appropriate for me to wear them, mores the pity. So for something less rugged I have some Barbour Chelsea boots which I get an enormous amount of wear out of. I've recently discovered Fitflop trainers and I often have discomfort with shoes, these are soooo comfy so may look into some Fitflop boots at some point for the winter. I also have small feet so have been known to buy children's boots/trainers - I'm 38 so I suppose buying age 13 is dressing a bit young for my age Grin but other than that WEAR WHATEVER BOOTS YOU LIKE THE LOOK OF AND FIND COMFORTABLE AND SUIT YOUR PURPOSE OP!

Cookerhood · 15/11/2020 12:17

I recommended these the other day. Josef Swivel Sandra 30. The comfiest boots I've ever had. Warm, comfy & waterproof.

TankGirl97 · 15/11/2020 12:20

Dr Martens Lenore boots. They are a Chelsea boot and fur lined. Comfiest boot every and stylish too.

I always wear hotter boots, they are called Derrymore now, used to be called something else. I also wear whisper which are ankle boots for trouser days. I am over 50. I have dodgy feet, wide and unstable due to various injuries in the past. I wear and wear the boots and then replace them with the same ones when they wear out!

keeprocking · 15/11/2020 12:30

I never knew that there were 'over 50s' boots! Memories of buying a pair of boots when visiting daughter at Uni, she admired them and I said 'We'll get you some, they're from Scholl', suddenly she'd gone off them, she couldn't be seen in 'old lady' boots! I often wonder when I'm in Chuch when I'll be old enough for tweed skirts. Wear what you like!

Destinysdaughter · 15/11/2020 12:33

I'm 55 and wear boots like these. Also Debenhams boots are on sale right now!

Practical answer: Blundstones are great and I wear mine hiking as well. They look good and they’re waterproof as hell.

Philosophical answer: if I saw a woman my age (or any age at all) wandering down the street in skyscraper heels, fur bootees or wellies, literally my only thought process would be: that looks warm/stylish/uncomfortable. At no stage would I flee in horror thinking ‘oh no! A middle aged woman wearing footwear for a twenty-year-old’. I no longer wear high heels because they hurt my feet not because of some unwritten rule. The ‘Mutton’ phrase is all about a misogynistic notion of women past their fertile years being either grotesque or figures of fun if they continue to present themselves as sexual beings. It’s also an assumption that women dress ‘for men’ and clearly we don’t. Check out ‘Advanced Style’ blog for lots of stylish people wearing what the hell they like and giving no actual fucks. Grin

Moshulu boots are ace.

IcedPurple · 15/11/2020 13:03

Count me as another who didn't get the memo about 50 being the cut off point for certain types of footwear. I'm 51 and I still wear shoes with cute T straps and high heeled boots in colours other than beige. Maybe people are being polite but I've never been told I'm too old for them.

PaperMonster · 15/11/2020 13:21

I will just echo the many comments regarding the ridiculous concept of there being an age limit on boots!

I love my Docs. I also like my ridiculously cosy Toms boots and I have a gorgeous pair of Laura Vita ones.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 15/11/2020 13:29

It isn’t that older people think there’s an age limit on certain clothes, as much as certain garments just not looking good on older people. In a similar way, very classic twin set type things probably don’t look so good on younger women.

When I was 50, I had a pair of purple very high heels with studs. The students in my year group complimented me on my footwear regularly.

Who gets to decide this though, or to define 'older' or 'younger' woman?

Twin sets used to be very popular among young women, which just goes to show how arbitrary these 'rules' are.

VinylDetective · 15/11/2020 13:39

Look at what your 20 year old colleagues are wearing and buy those if you like them. The whole concept of dressing “age appropriately” is so profoundly depressing. I’m 67 and wearing leopard print biker boots today.

ilovesooty · 15/11/2020 13:53

Age is irrelevant. My boots are from Fly and Fitflop.

Joswis · 15/11/2020 13:56

I don't think age is totally irrelevant. I wouldn't wear anything that screamed 'teenager'. The same style with less bells and whistles, yes. UNLESS your personal style is very funky, in your face dramatic, then I agree, that can look great on older women. But I am a very subdued older woman. I would still wear leopard print boots, for example, but with very plain, all black beatnic style clothes. Nothing with lots of chains, jewels etc.

user1487194234 · 15/11/2020 13:57

Am. 54 and still wear whatever I want

But would you have worn chains or jewels when you were younger?

I also wouldn't dress like this, but that's not because I'm 51, simply because it's not my style. I wouldn't have dressed like that at 19 either.

Joswis · 15/11/2020 14:32

I would have done, yes. I was a new romantic. I'd look ridiculous if I dressed that way now. Elements of it would be ok, but modified for what I look like now.

VinylDetective · 15/11/2020 15:16

We’d all look ridiculous if we dressed the way we did when we were 19! Loons and platforms for me! I certainly wouldn’t rule out dressing like some 2020 19 year olds.

Joswis · 15/11/2020 15:27

I bought new trainers (not for exercise) based on one of my students tastes. But she's fairly subdued, elegant rather than trendy.

whatisforteamum · 15/11/2020 15:42

I forgot about Gabor that is a good suggestion.I agree some women look great whatever they wear.I don't see myself as a conformist as I work in a male dominated industry and with much younger people. That said I don't want to dress like I think I am 20.
Thank you all for the helpful suggestions.Very useful.

I don’t think you should worry about what people think, especially as you get older! But realistically we do get more foot problems / have had injuries that mean the heels aren’t as welcome as they used to be. If I could wear vertiginous heels I would!

MaudHatter · 15/11/2020 15:51

Huge fan of Fly London boots here .
Also Dubarry if you want some that are truly waterproof
