Toilet will not unblock. Have tried pretty much everything.

Posting here for traffic.
My toilet has been blocked for a week now.

I'm not sure if I blocked it, or if it was the people in the apartment upstairs.
If it was me who blocked it, then it was some toilet roll and poo. Nothing abnormal.
No-one else lives here.

The toilet bowl takes hours to drain.
And then if more water is added, the toilet bowl merely fills all the way back up again.
Then it takes another 6 hours or more to fully drain.
I'm at my wits end.

I have tried:
A plunger
Hot water and washing up liquid
Vinegar and baking soda
A wire hanger.

Nothing works.
I'm skint and can't afford a plumber.

This will sound strange but try putting a plastic bag over a mop head and using that like a plunger, but do it really hard. It'll splash everywhere so there's a lot of cleaning up needed but I've found that to work when nothing else would.

MLMsuperfan · 14/11/2020 09:19

I heard about a method using cling film.

Huglikeabear · 14/11/2020 09:20

Sounds like it's the actual sewer that is blocked- have you had a look under the manhole cover? If it's so blocked that the toilet takes that long to drain you need a drain unblocking firm, it will only take about an hour to fix.

MsMiaWallace · 14/11/2020 09:20

Bleach & hot water?

Starryskiesinthesky · 14/11/2020 09:21

You can buy acid solutions that you pour down and leave. They have always worked for me although one time my partner did have to put his hand in a bag and shove his arm in and pull out all the crap!

Taikoo · 14/11/2020 09:22

My apartment's on the 25th floor of a high rise.
Sorry I should have said that first.

@MLMsuperfan

I heard about a method using cling film.
This works, my darling toddler blocked the toilet with wet wipes. I put a post on a local fb group asking for a plumber and someone suggested using cling film, if you google it there are videos on YouTube
GiraffeNecked · 14/11/2020 09:22

Sounds like irks the drains. Cost 200 to fix ours, it was so much because there was no manhole cover and they had to dig.

Taikoo · 14/11/2020 09:23

I also tried a liquid drain cleaner for toilets. It did not work.

I know you say you can’t afford a plumber OP, but could someone lend you the money for one? There may be a problem which could arise again if you don’t get it professionally sorted out.

picklemewalnuts · 14/11/2020 09:25

Can you ask neighbours if the are having trouble? The cost of a plumber between a few people may work out!

pinkbalconyrailing · 14/11/2020 09:25

do you have a management company?
porter?
have heard from other neighbours with issues?

it does sound like it's not you but a blockage somewhere else.

thebabessavedme · 14/11/2020 09:25

call your management company, it may be you are not the only apartment with this issue and its a problem for them to sort out not you.

this is what you pay maintenance fees for.

Winterwoollies · 14/11/2020 09:26

I unblock toilets by chucking a great big bucket of water down there. The huge pressure is often enough to dislodge whatever it is. But obviously don’t do it if the bowl hasn’t drained. 💦

I tried that. The water merely fills all the way up to the toilet rim. Then it takes 6-8 hours to drain back to normal.

Is it private or council? If council ring them, if private do you pay a yearly service charge, if so check to see if it covers drains.

Ratonastick · 14/11/2020 09:29

There’s some hardcore Mr Muscle drain cleaner that sinks through standing water. Worth a try? Also have you checked to see if you have any emergency call out on your house insurance?

Do you live in a hard water area? I had similar a few years ago and had to get the plumber in. It turned out to be a lump of limescale the size of a half brick that had built up in the U bend. It must have been there for years and eventually it got big enough to block to the loo.

Taikoo · 14/11/2020 09:29

Its private.

I only moved in to the apartment a month ago.

HG Drain liquid drain unblocked.
Make sure most of the water is drained away. Use pretty much the whole bottle. Leave overnight.

FippertyGibbett · 14/11/2020 09:30

Put your hand down and push the blockage over the U bend.

Mamamia456 · 14/11/2020 09:31

Do you pay yearly maintenance charges?

SadderThanEeyore · 14/11/2020 09:31

Do you own it or rent op?

MrsMoastyToasty · 14/11/2020 09:32

Check with the people who live on the bottom floor and also neighbouring buildings. If theirs are blocked then its likely to be the public sewer.

Newernewist · 14/11/2020 09:32

Sounds like it's a problem in the soil stack, if so this is a building problem.
I would contact the management of the building, if you are affected on the 25th floor, its v likely that others in the building are too.
