Toilet will not unblock. Have tried pretty much everything.

Posting here for traffic.
My toilet has been blocked for a week now.

I'm not sure if I blocked it, or if it was the people in the apartment upstairs.
If it was me who blocked it, then it was some toilet roll and poo. Nothing abnormal.
No-one else lives here.

The toilet bowl takes hours to drain.
And then if more water is added, the toilet bowl merely fills all the way back up again.
Then it takes another 6 hours or more to fully drain.
I'm at my wits end.

I have tried:
A plunger
Hot water and washing up liquid
Vinegar and baking soda
A wire hanger.

Nothing works.
I'm skint and can't afford a plumber.

These are brilliant

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 14/11/2020 09:33

If you have a shared drain, then it's the water board's responsibility to fix, regardless of whether the property is privately owned or council. I'd phone the water board.

crimsonlake · 14/11/2020 09:33

Use the mop technique which has already been suggested. Always works, if that does not sort it then you have a bigger problem.

Taikoo · 14/11/2020 09:34

I'm renting.
I'm not sure if there are yearly maintenance charges, because I'm living abroad.
I really can't speak the language as I've only been abroad 2 months and the language is a different alphabet etc.

Normal plungers don’t work for my toilet when it blocks but then I got this one that looks like a giant buttplug and it works brilliantly

Powerful Toilet Plunger | Tested & Proven to Clear & Unblock Tough Drain Blockages | Air Has 8x More Power Than Traditional Toilet Plungers | Pukkr www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B077G9TZK4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_eo6RFbYNWYSVA?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

(Does lead to use of the phrase “get the butt plug, the toilets blocked again”, just hope never end up shouting that down the stairs when we have company over!)

If that doesn’t work then it must be the drains. Have you spoken to building management?

EvilPea · 14/11/2020 09:35

It’s not your toilet it’s the drain outside.
You can find your shower and sinks run quickly and fine but the toilet is the only symptom.

Have you got a management company?
I have to rod ours occasionally. Which is a grim enough job when it’s just ours and our neighbours but I wouldn’t be doing it for a flat full of people.

VettiyaIruken · 14/11/2020 09:35

Don't assume the problem is your flat. It's more likely there's a blockage somewhere in the system.
Find out who deals with communal issues and approach them. Contact the water company and see what they say. If it's not actually within your property then is it even something you are financially responsible for?

Taikoo · 14/11/2020 09:36

Yes, the sinks are fine and so is the shower.
I just cannot get the toilet unblocked at all.

X post, private rent means it's your landlords responsibility anyway!
It really doesn't sound like you have to find a way to magic up some cash, which will be a relief for you at least.

Catawaul · 14/11/2020 09:38

Does the sink gurgle when you flush the toilet? If so you have to put the sink plug in and shove a cloth in the sink overflow while you use the plunger in the toilet. This is to create pressure, otherwise the air just comes up through the sink and the toilet blockage isn't pushed away.

EvilPea · 14/11/2020 09:38

If you cannot improve the toilet with all you’ve done. It’s not your toilet it’s the drain.
You’ve been there a month if can’t be your massive shits that’s done it!!

LilacPebbles · 14/11/2020 09:39

Empty a full bottle of washing up liquid down the loo, boil a kettle full of water and as soon as it's boiled, pour it down. You may need another kettle full of water, but this has worked every time here

OneLinePlease · 14/11/2020 09:39

I think perhaps now is the time to get working on your new language skills.

Google how to ask your neighbours if their loo is blocked and go and start knocking doors.

Then drop the landlord an email.

A couple of months into life abroad you really need to start having these sort of discussions or else you're going to end up very isolated.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 14/11/2020 09:40

Someone in one of the other apartments has probably flushed nappies or something else they weren't meant to and blocked the soil pipe.

EvilPea · 14/11/2020 09:41

If you have a nosey outside you may find the offending drain by smell or by water around it. Sometimes shower water etc can go round the blockage so it doesn’t cause an issue for them and other times it just comes out the top.

Its better if I don't flush the toilet, otherwise it will overflow.

This is something for your landlord to fix, surely?

Where are you, OP? For anyone in the UK with this problem, this from B&Q is brilliant for £12.49.

If you are abroad some country's drains are not up to dealing with toilet paper. What country are you in op ?

TwentyViginti · 14/11/2020 09:43

Biological laundry liquid in hot water is often a cure for this if it's just a toilet blockage.

pessimistiquerealistique · 14/11/2020 09:44

You put that toilet plunger into the toilet bowl when it's half-full with water and then while keeping it firmly and tightly down in the hole try to move the handle up and down (jiggling it) creating the air flow. In a few seconds or a minute the air force will unblock the toilet. Then flush again.

MajorMujer · 14/11/2020 09:44

Ok, can you get / have you tried soda crystals?

MrDarcysMa · 14/11/2020 09:45

It's you let shared soil pipe/ drain that's blocked.
Inform landlord ASAP, it's a building management issue.
