I always thought having a family (husband and kids) meant I’d never be alone or lonely and my life would be full. It’s full but full of cleaning up after them and feeding them. Friday night and I’m on my own in the sitting room again while kids and husband are all in separate rooms on their devices/headphones/games. Is this normal? Do you spend evenings sat on your own while the rest of your family play on devices/consoles? What are your kids and partners doing right now?

Hello Op.
We have just had a big Indian takeaway. The children (13 and 14) have just gone upstairs to watch stuff separately.
DH and I are digesting whilst texting various friends and will watch something together shortly.

Yesterday, our son spent the evening with us doing some online stuff whilst we watched DIY SOS.
We mostly spend evenings separately, but every Saturday we make a point of watching a family movie. Often with home made pizza , snacks and sweets.
We eat every meal together at the weekends and every weekday evening in an effort to be together.

I guess it's about finding a balance between what everyone wants and needs to do.

Luckily DH and I like the same sort of TV and always have a series on the go.

thenightsky · 13/11/2020 19:33

DH is in the home office, watching something on Netflix.
I'm in the lounge watching Say Yes to the Dress UK.
DS is in the kitchen making us a lovely curry, like he does every Friday.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 13/11/2020 19:34

DD is away at Uni. DS is at his girlfriend's house. DH is cooking in the kitchen. I am in the living room contemplating what we are going to watch on TV tonight after dinner, which will be about 9pm.

Elvesinquarantine · 13/11/2020 19:35

Watching a film with dh and 1 dc. Other dc have flitted in to share the snacks!! Ddog is also glued to the TV!!

Melissa4 · 13/11/2020 19:36

We spend most Friday evenings together in the same room. Sometimes on our phones though! And sometimes sat closer to the cat than him Grin

Seafog · 13/11/2020 19:37

It's almost noon here, and I am sitting sea glass by colour

What are you doing right now?
ShirleyPhallus · 13/11/2020 19:37

This is a bit self selecting cos the people off doing stuff with their families won’t be sitting on MN!

DH is watching the rugby, the baby is in bed, we are waiting for take away to arrive. So I feel at a bit of a lose end and am actually enjoying sitting doing nothing.

Friday night is usually our “date” night in the house but not tonight so I feel a bit spare!

BillywigSting · 13/11/2020 19:39

We had dinner together then I showered ds(7). I stayed upstairs for a bit dicking about on here then played a board game with ds while dp faffed with his tablet.

Ds and dp are now upstairs watching cartoons while I try to muster the energy for a shower because I have work at 8am and need to wash my hair.

I am also pointedly not doing the dishes as I did the ones from yesterday despite working 12 hours. I'm not ironing either because dp said he would.

I am cutting my nose off to spite my face a bit there tbh because it's my uniform that needs ironing and I'll probably have to do it in the morning but I'm too tired to care right now.

Me and dp will probably watch something on Netflix for an hour or so before I collapse into bed at a depressingly early hour.

My kids are playing together (the older one reluctantly with the little one) my other Dd just stormed to her bedroom in a strop because I suggested she might have to share her bedroom. My partner is playing on his pc. I'll put the little to bed soon after his bedtime snack then the other two will go up to their rooms about 9 and I think dh has plans to watch GOT however usually I would be working as I work from home so I usually just work the night away

SimonJT · 13/11/2020 19:45

My son is in bed, he went to be at 6:30 so he is going to be awake at stupid o’clock.

My partner is in bed reading a book.

I’m watching rugby, finishing diwali decorations and pissing about on my phone.

Muchadoaboutlife · 13/11/2020 19:49

Thanks for all the replies. Really interesting

I am eating a Magnum and drinking Baileys. (Diet going so well this week)

DH works abroad.
DS1 is at work.
DS2 is off doing D of E stuff.

Just me, the radio, fire lit, candles on. I love it.

AethelsWhiteGoose · 13/11/2020 19:51

Teens are in their rooms, dh and I are listening to music together.

Ginfordinner · 13/11/2020 19:52

Watching Children in Need while DH washws up the stuff that can't go in the dishwasher. he will make me a cup of tea and come and join me.

DD is away at university.

mogloveseggs · 13/11/2020 19:52

Dh is upstairs watching football
Dd16 is in her room
Ds7 and I are watching children in need downstairs

Menofsteel · 13/11/2020 19:53

Hi OP. Dropped DD to her dad and having a glass of wine and trying to unwind (dad died of Covid on Wednesday night) and eat something. Probably going to get my hamster out for a snuggle as he’s the least hassle of everyone in the house and gives me the least work 🤣

VioletCharlotte · 13/11/2020 19:53

Single parent with adult DC. DS1 is at uni, DS2 is upstairs watching TV. I worked until 6, went food shopping, now I'm eating dinner and scrolling Mumsnet. This evening I'll watch TV for a bit before going to bed and reading. I like my own space and never really get lonely.

ApolloandDaphne · 13/11/2020 19:54

My DDs are adults and don't live at home now. DH and I have had dinner and are watching CIN on tv. We are about to Skype my DM who is 80 today along with other family members.

Mindymomo · 13/11/2020 19:54

We’ve just had a chinese takeaway. We have my brother around as he’s in our bubble, so Ok as he lives alone. We are now watching the golf. 4 men and myself. I’ve recorded corrie to watch later or watching Gogglebox on my own.

bloodywhitecat · 13/11/2020 19:55

DP and I are sitting in the same room but he's watching some dross film on the TV while I browse the internet, there was something I needed to buy/look up but I cannot remember what it was for the life of me.

Both babies are asleep and I am answering messages from the biggest baby's new parents (we foster and big baby is moving in with their new mummy and daddy right before Christmas, what a fantastic Christmas they are going to have!).

MoodieMare · 13/11/2020 19:55

I'm procrastinating on here while I'm supposed to be getting ready for work.
Don't have a DP and DD is in the living room watching TV, if I stop pissing about I'll have enough time to eat my dinner in there with her before I go.

The dogs obviously are on lifeguard duty ensuring I don't drown in the bath. 🐺

Belindabelle · 13/11/2020 19:56

The thing is op if you are not happy you need to let your family know and make plans to change it.
We used to have Scrabble Sunday. A nice roast lunch followed by a long walk then back for board games (including Scrabble at my insistence) and a film.
What would you like your evenings to be like.

WotWouldCJDo · 13/11/2020 19:59

I think winter nights are tough as it’s too dark to go for a walk which is something DP and I do together.

Knottedstomach11 · 13/11/2020 20:00

Sitting with DS as he falls asleep - I love him. DH is on the other sofa - I hate him tonight. DD is in bed asleep, DSS is in his room on his Xbox.
When DS falls asleep I want to watch a movie on Amazon, eat galaxy chocolate & drink Diet Coke.

slothtrot · 13/11/2020 20:00

Eating pizza and watching the James May Cookery show with my DCs
