Had an interview this week and my knowledge of foreign languages came up (not relevant to the role but nice to have)... I studied two at university and did another one at a level (good marks) and have them on CV as advanced/intermediate levels. Interviewed picked up on this and said “oh you speak three languages” and I immediately said oh but rusty on a couple but good knowledge of the other... immediately regretted it as now paranoid it looks like I have overblown it? Sorry. Stressing!

If its not relevant/required for the job then I honestly wouldn't worry about it

Leaannb · 13/11/2020 19:17

Yea...you flubbed it. Unless you are fluent or close to ,it shouldn't be on there and should be removed. Oqt seems deceptive to list it if you can't utilize it.

Yes I am close to. On the others I am intermediate. As a languages student I am just reticent to say I “speak” the ones which I’m not fluent in.

Have specifically said advanced or intermediate too

Sounds ok to me.
You didn't oversell your skills.
But I find in interviews you don't need to be passive. It's as much about you finding if the job is suitable for you.
You could have asked if the interviewer spoke any languages.
You could have asked if there were any opportunities to use your languages.
At the last company I worked for, all foreign language speakers were registered, so they could help with customers, even if it wasn't part of your job.
You could also say you are looking for experience using the ones you are not fluent in.
Interviews are a game. It's about making yourself stand out, and building a rapour with the interviewer

Thanks - now wondering if I get rid of the languages all together? I am competent at them just out of practise and have achieved good marks in them in recent years
