To not understand nosey people

There is currently an ambulance at a flat across from me. I was only aware of this as I saw the flashing lights. There is currently an older lady almost hanging out of her window to see what is going on and two more neighbours standing on their doorsteps watching. Why? Why are people so nosey??

They must lead very sad, boring lives themselves and have never heard of hobbies.

Weirdest of all are the ones who are more interested in something mundane that you do/have done (or how you do it) than you actually are yourself.

I still chuckle at something I read ages ago, where there was a woman whose husband told her not to be such a nosey parker and constantly staring out at the neighbourhood. She vigorously denied this outrageous suggestion. However, the house next door was put up for sale and then, when the sales particulars were released, guess who could very clearly be seen in the main brochure photograph standing behind her twitching net curtains and having a good old intense gawp out at the estate agents' photographer Grin

Why you commenting on what your neighbours are doing?
Isn't it nosey?

justleavemebe · 13/11/2020 16:35

My neighbour tells me all the gossip from our road, I literally don't have a clue what's going on down here🤦🏻‍♀️

MedusasBadHairDay · 13/11/2020 16:37

My old neighbour uses to suddenly start pottering around her completely paved and empty front garden if anything was going on out the front. There was a day that DD got taken to hospital by ambulance, really late one night, and the neighbour decided that she needed to come out and put recycling in her bin in the dark. Hmm

You could always hear her telling anyone who walked past whatever gossip she'd picked up, so she hated that we refused to tell her anything.

I must be nosey then. An ambulance stopped near my house so I went out to see if I could be of use. Not everyone has childcare and ambulances can only take a certain amount of people.

I did the same when the fire engines came to rescue a neighbours cat oh and when the council came in the middle of the night to chop down a half blown down tree. And no I don’t live in Eastenders. 🤣

Laurendelight · 13/11/2020 16:41

Just to add I don’t gossip I just remember being on my own with small baby with no one to lean on.

I have so little interest in other people's lives it's possibly not normal... people often ask me things about my life and my child...it's harmless chit chat, and I don't mind, but I often find myself thinking...'i have no interest in your life, why are you so interested in mine?'

AlexisIsMySpiritAnimal · 13/11/2020 16:46

My nana Beryl was like this because it was all she had left to do once they retired. She knew everything about everyone. Knew what time the post boys went past, commenting if they were late.
Now in our family, if anyone is being a nosey busybody they get "Oi Beryl, come away from't window" no matter who it is. My DH can be a right nosey bastard and hates it when I call him Beryl Grin

They have small lives. I've had neighbours that were obviously prying but I never share. Becsuse of this they started their attention seeking behaviour. Again I couldnt be less interested. It's part of the reason I loved living in London. We just lived our lives and never disturbed each other

2bazookas · 13/11/2020 17:10

maybe it was their friend being taken to hospital?

Tenyearsgone · 13/11/2020 17:11

So you are being nosy curtain twitching at your nosy neighbours?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 13/11/2020 17:12

Where I come from it would be rude NOT to show your face if someone is being carted off in an ambulance.

Meepmeeep · 13/11/2020 17:14

You’re obviously watching your neighbour watch the ambulance. Being nosy yourself 🤷🏻‍♀️

Mixedupworld · 13/11/2020 17:17

Haha.. yes I suppose I was being nosey but I literally looked up, saw the ambulance, went back to what i was doing then next time i glanced up I saw the nosey people.

There's a massive difference between showing concern and going out to see if you can help in any practical way at all and hiding behind your net curtains going "Ooooh" like Frank Spencer and making mental notes that you will richly embellish for telling every single person you know all about it for months to come.
