To think that you should always rinse dishes when hand washing them?

Over the years I have come across a number of people who hand wash dishes with soap (obviously) but then do not rinse the dirty soap off under water. They either go straight to drying them with a towel, or they put them to drip dry. I think that is gross. Now the dirt is still on the dishes plus soap scum is there too. It's like having a bath and not rinsing off the dirt/bubbles before drying yourself. I think both habits are gross. Anyone else in my court or is it just me?

@ParadiseLaundry

YANBU. Not rinsing is minging.

And I bet the people who dry them with a tea towel wash that same tea towel in a 20degree wash with their underwear🤮

Well, you’d lose your money then. Clean tea towel every day, washed once a week in a separate load at 60.

Question How many tea towels do people have? Ive got about 15, they all get washed with other towels.

I drink fairly light black tea. I can tell instantly if rinsing has been skipped.

You run your washing machine once a week with just seven small items in it?

I always rinse just in case I missed anything on the dish/pan whatever.

ddl1 · 13/11/2020 18:11

I always rinse stuff. I don't think it's necessarily 'gross' not to do so if the sink and its surrounds are kept fairly clean. But I just don't want my food to start tasting of dishwashing liquid!

Yes, I use the hot water I save by not rinsing.

Always rinse! My husband doesn’t and I can tell because there is always stuck on food particles under the bubbles on the dishes and/or soap scum. He does a rush job and I end up rewashing most of it.

I notice it’s a family trait and I grin and bear it when the in-laws visit because I rather them just leave the dishes for me to sort but they ignore my request and I usually re-clean them afterwards when they’ve gone to bed or have left.

My parents were militant about washing dishes and would toss anything back that wasn’t fully clean so it was best to get it right the first time.

laudemio · 13/11/2020 19:23

I agree, always rinse.

SomewhereInbetween1 · 13/11/2020 19:34

How much soap are y'all using that you can taste it if you don't rinse it? Confused

Animum2 · 13/11/2020 20:04

I always rinse!

LG101 · 13/11/2020 20:17

I’ve never rinsed and never thought about it. Surely the surfactant would does its job cleaning?

Tbh I’m more interested if you rinse after a bath? Honestly is this something people do?

lemorella · 13/11/2020 20:18

YANBU

If me and DH are going to divorce over anything it will be this.

I can't stand the thought of the washing up sponge being the last thing to touch the plate with no rinse Confused

vodkaredbullgirl · 13/11/2020 20:57

I often soak my dishes, hardly ever wash up straight after eating. Always in boiling hot water, then go back to it later and start over again. Bleach my dish cloth everytime I use it or stick it in the wash if i have a load of towels.

DimidDavilby · 13/11/2020 21:00

Wow I never thought I'd be on the clean side of the equation on mumsnet!
Gross not to rinse I think, and I only shower once a week.

Popcornismandatory · 13/11/2020 21:01

This is what dishwasher was invented for and only things I pre wash is the cat bowls

oncloudnine · 13/11/2020 21:47

I agree, I always rinse dishes and also rinse myself after a bath. I'd feel gross otherwise.

PicpouldePinet · 13/11/2020 23:59

OP it seems to be a very English thing. Poor hygiene standards unfortunately, I think it comes from war time war rationing where people would fill a tub with bath water, sit in it, get up and get out, and then the next person would use the same bathwater.
Despite the abundance of running water now maybe old habits die hard.
I'm not surprised so many people still sit in a tub filled with their own muck and then just stand up and leave. Gross and disgusting, but a very English trait!

safariboot · 14/11/2020 00:01

DM does this, and uses loads of washing-up liquid too. I never noticed food tasting soapy, but still, when I wash up I rinse. Rinsing is a pain in the butt if you only have a single bowl sink though.

Pebbledashery · 14/11/2020 00:07

Bugs me so much when I see dishes with soap on put straight into the drying rack.. Why would you not rinse them.
They always seem to wash up like that in eastenders!

RETIREDandHAPPY · 14/11/2020 00:26

It's not so much the soap that needs rinsing off! Have you looked at the water in the basin after the dishes are done? It can be really dirty.

timeforanewstart · 14/11/2020 01:23

How much washing up liquid are people using to taste soap i mean mines diluted in the water and moat of us in uk only have one sink , so i would have to wash up put everything on the drainer and then rinse but obviously wiping the drainer first as would be soap suds.
I have a dishwasher so only hand wAsh a few bits i would only rinse if extremly bubbly

timeforanewstart · 14/11/2020 01:26

@LandlockedBlues we tend to scrape the food off our plates as its not good to be going down your sink.
Greasy stuff goes in at the end or for a quick soak.
If im washing up a lot i would change water if dirty
