To think that you should always rinse dishes when hand washing them?

Over the years I have come across a number of people who hand wash dishes with soap (obviously) but then do not rinse the dirty soap off under water. They either go straight to drying them with a towel, or they put them to drip dry. I think that is gross. Now the dirt is still on the dishes plus soap scum is there too. It's like having a bath and not rinsing off the dirt/bubbles before drying yourself. I think both habits are gross. Anyone else in my court or is it just me?

@LividLaughLurve

Not-rinsers are probably also toilet seat hoverers and splashers.

I cannot fathom either.

Essentially, it’s probably a good job I can no longer eat in anyone’s house or go anywhere that requires a public loo...

Not guilty, m’lady. I never hover, let alone splash.

I rinse the glasses off and let the plates drip dry for a bit till I wipe them up. If I have used too much washing up liquid I might rinse them all depends.
I do have a dishwasher which is a god send , but I hate unloading it all.

PeggyPorschen · 13/11/2020 11:14

Only in England have I discovered that it's a "thing" not to rinse. It's puzzling.

If you shower or wash anything, you rinse? So why on earth wouldn't you rince your dishes? I don't get it.

Unless they wash with running water? Bit wasteful though.

Oysterbabe · 13/11/2020 11:16

Yes of course I rinse. My parents never did and you'd literally have soap bubbles on the top of your cup of tea Grin

AzraiL · 13/11/2020 11:18

Yes rinse. I feel like not doing it is kind of like getting out of the shower covered in suds and just towelling off.

Scbchl · 13/11/2020 11:21

@Northernshepherd but you arent eating food or drinking fluids off your body.

I cant imagine not rinsing especially if you had something like mashed potato where bits float around the water and cling to things even after washing. It NEEDS rinsed. My sister doesnt becasue she only has a sink not a bowl and a half and said it never occurred to her to rinse.

Graciebobcat · 13/11/2020 11:22

I don't rinse but hardly wash anything up really as we use the dishwasher for most things, so the water doesn't have chance to get dirty. Never had anything soapy though. I could see the point if you were doing a big lot of washing up, but in practice when I used to do this I'd do glasses first and change the water if it got dirty anyway.

I wonder if people who do this have a shower after they've had a bath Smile

ginghamtablecloths · 13/11/2020 11:23

Mum never rinsed and it didn't kill us. I run things under the tap and it's sufficient, surely?

user1493494961 · 13/11/2020 11:25

I don't know why people worry so much about what other people are doing, or not doing as the case may be.

SwedishK · 13/11/2020 11:29

Always rinse. I'm not British though and this is one of the things we make fun of the Brits for. That and the fact that you have a plastic tub in which you do your dishes. Why not just do them in the sink?

BarryWhiteIsMyBrother · 13/11/2020 11:35

Good point - I've never seen it done in other cultures. I think we are the only country who don't always rinse. Yuk!

SomelikeitHoth · 13/11/2020 11:36

Always rinse them in hot water to remove debris and soap

Ugzbugz · 13/11/2020 11:37

I hate not rinsing, of course you wont die but you've just rubbed the food and germs or whatever all around the plate and then not washed it away, just rubbed soap bubbles over it, foul.

Do these people not rinse soap of their body or shampoo and conditioner off?

Bigjohn0 · 13/11/2020 11:37

Rinse everything it's scummy not too

PeggyPorschen · 13/11/2020 11:38

you have a plastic tub in which you do your dishes. Why not just do them in the sink?

because not everyone has a utility room and an outdoor tap!

NOW that I have both, my kitchen sink is only used for the kitchen, so it's clean. When I lived in a flat, the sink was the only place you could wash mud, dirt, baby everything, and everything really. Never felt right to put dishes in it after, even if you do clean the sink after every use.

Tenyearsgone · 13/11/2020 11:40

How do you rinse after a bath? Are you one of those weirdos who has a shower after a bath?

Bigjohn0 · 13/11/2020 11:41

H

BarryWhiteIsMyBrother · 13/11/2020 11:42

I stand, take the shower head and rinse off the bubbles. It's not weird, it's clean!

vodkaredbullgirl · 13/11/2020 11:43

Are we talking soap soap or washing up liquid?

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 13/11/2020 11:49

I wash in hot soapy water and then dunk into the bowl to get the bubbles off. If the water gets too cold/dirty run a clean bowl of water. I use a bowl not the sink because on the rare occasion I need to run the tap while I'm washing up I can run it next to the bowl not into my washing up water.

Showering after a bath is a ridiculous waste of water.

Oliversmumsarmy · 13/11/2020 11:49

I never rinse. Nobody has died

How do you know nobody has died.

Washing up liquid contains chemicals that you shouldn’t be eating.

Who is to say that it doesn’t cause cancer or some other disease or illness.

Even a dishwasher has a rinse cycle.

Who wants to have your food taste of soap.

MarinPrime · 13/11/2020 11:50

I rinse my dishes but can't say I've ever rinsed myself on emerging from the bath. Am I doing baths wrong??

If your skin feels fine, no itching or skin problems then carry on not rinsing.
I have to rinse otherwise I end up with itchy flaky skin.
Only takes a few seconds just a quick spray with the hand held shower.

BarryWhiteIsMyBrother · 13/11/2020 11:52

Showering after a bath is a ridiculous waste of water.

I think it's more ridiculous to have a bath and still be dirty afterwards. Do you not rinse shampoo either?

I think I’d know if anyone had died as I’d have gone to their funeral! My food doesn’t taste of soap and washing up liquid isn’t toxic.
tommika · 13/11/2020 11:54

It’s the ‘right’ thing to rinse off the soap residue, as otherwise you’re ultimately going to end up consuming the soap later on
But only a microscopic amount that won’t do any harm

I wash up with the tap still running slowly, so:
wash, rinse, air dry
