Dh things my DSS are to old for a Christmas Eve box?
They are like my big helpful baby's their 20 and 17, one DSs has been staying with his mum past few weeks and the other with his GF but both said they want to be here over Xmas and want their Xmas Eve box's like the kids (my youngest 3)
I'm so glad they want to be here over Xmas and I love the fact they will always want the box's no matter. How old they get lol dh says their to old, but your never to old right ??
Also any ideas what to add in them
Going to do one big box save getting 5, all new pjs, mugs, books, bath bombs and some goodies an then teddy's (yes they love them to) 🤣

One big box? No. If you don't do individual iindividual boxes then you take away the whole object, surely? They've said they want their boxes so I think they'll be disappointed with a communal box.

Nottherealslimshady · 12/11/2020 21:52

Individual boxes. Mugs with hot chocolate sachet and mini marshmallows. Popcorn. Book?

autumnkate · 12/11/2020 21:55

Am I reading this right?

A 20 year old man wants a Christmas teddy?

iolaus · 12/11/2020 21:57

If you have always done individual boxes you need to carry it on

Mine don't have xmas eve boxes (they do have new jamas) but if I was going to do them for late teens I'd have pyjamas, hot chocolate - possible a small alcohol to put it in) mug to drink it from,
18 year old suggested chocolates and biscuits (and lynx for the 17 year old)

autumnkate · 12/11/2020 22:00

Ok I must be mean! I had no idea people were doing this for adult children.

cardibach · 12/11/2020 22:02

I’m surprised that at 20 he ever had a Christmas Eve box as a child. My DD is 24 and it wasn’t a thing when she was small - or for some time after. Christmas stockings - no, never too old. Christmas Eve boxes? Don’t get them at all, to be honest.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 12/11/2020 22:08

Ds1 is 21, his boyfriend is 24, dd 19 and ds2 17

They have individual ‘boxes’

No teddies, but they get a book and pjs etc 😀

Ugzbugz · 12/11/2020 22:12

What about a few beers? Xmas beer glass, novelty socks or a family xmas game for the evening?

Sparklingbrook · 12/11/2020 22:14

I have never done this, I had never even hear of it until MN. Please nobody tell my DSs (18 & 21) that they have missed out on all those years of pyjamas and hot chocolate.

I think that they should buy you a Christmas Eve box now OP.

TimeToCloseTheDoor · 12/11/2020 22:15

Yep, still doing individual boxes for DD 18, 16 and their partners now - I just feel that letting them hang on to that little bit of childhood takes away from the pressure of daily life.

Wouldn’t do a box for all though

DramaAlpaca · 12/11/2020 22:16

I've never done this either and certainly won't be starting it now. Mine are mid-20s and quite grown up enough to wait until the morning for Christmas presents.

Christmaspud20 · 12/11/2020 22:17

I'm nr 40 and I had an Xmas eve bag from the age of 3. With similar items.we used to go to a party Xmas eve, so it had new outfit for the night, hairbands pjs, something to keep us busy during the day sweets etc.

I do dh one.. Minus the Teddy.

TimeToCloseTheDoor · 12/11/2020 22:17

Typo have some different boxed socks which would work well in a Xmas Eve box or stocking

here

lovemincepies · 12/11/2020 22:18

What I have realised from Mumsnet is that my children have Christmas presents which would end up in a Christmas Eve box ..

PJs and books and say a board game.

That is the Christmas lot.

However I think for many Mnetters that would just be the Xmas Eve box Smile

BackforGood · 12/11/2020 22:19

Yup, same here.
But if this is something that they have been having, then, yes, of course they want to carry on - it is part of their tradition. It isn't about what the gift is. My adult dc want stockings, even though they've never had anything valuable in them and they are very predictable In fact, it is the predictability that makes the tradition.
I do think you need individual boxes though - use gift bags or something if you don't have boxes. You can't do a communal one, that's not the same thing at all.

Sweettea1 · 12/11/2020 22:21

Is anyone really to old for presents? as this is what a Xmas eve box is a gift. I would go for a box each tho with just pjs, smelly set, book (if they read) some chocs maybe a new mug or a mini alcohol gift set if they drink.

Fucket · 12/11/2020 22:23

I think people who go way over the top with this kind of stuff are not really doing it for the adult children. Be honest, you’re doing it for yourself, which is fine of course. I’m sure at that age they’d rather be making merry with their mates!

SameToo · 12/11/2020 22:24

Christmas Eve box is such bollocks. Why’s it even a thing? Are we going to have a Boxing Day box next? Tbh that at least makes sense.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 12/11/2020 22:27

The Christmas eve book is usually something ive picked

As opposed to books they actually want which this year includes The art of War by sun tzu, The Prince by machiavelli, books by plato and aristotle...i feel ive failed as a mother 😀

2gorgeousboys · 12/11/2020 22:28

I'll be doing one as usual for DS1 (20) and DS2 (16). They don't get one each, it's the same shared box that has been delivered since 2000. New pyjamas plus the same Christmas mugs, Santa key, book and Father Christmas plate that come out every year. Usually add hot choc but probably replace it with a beer or two this year. Nothing new other than pyjamas.

I'm almost 50 and we got new pyjamas every Christmas Eve until I left home so it's just something I've carried on. Nothing in there that would be in a stocking just some traditions and they'll humour their Mum by being accident this year just as they have every other year.

Proudboomer · 12/11/2020 22:29

I have never done Christmas Eve boxes. Used to give out Christmas pyjamas on going to bed Christmas Eve when my children were young but as they are in their 20’s now they don’t want to wear themed nightwear anymore. I never saw the point of Christmas dvds as we had cable with endless Christmas movies from the start of December and if they want hot chocolate then there will be some in the kitchen cupboard.
Christmas stockings are still given but now left hanging from their bedroom door rather than the bottom of their bed as adults deserve privacy from mum.p and the contents have changed from small toys and Christmas themed socks to deodorant, shower gel and car air fresheners.

Slippy78 · 12/11/2020 22:30

What's a Christmas Eve box? I've never heard of it.

Sparklingbrook · 12/11/2020 22:32

My adult DSs don't drink hot chocolate or wear pyjamas so it's probably a good thing we've never done this. Grin

myhobbyisouting · 12/11/2020 22:32

Oh here we go Hmm

MrsTumbletap · 12/11/2020 22:33

I'm looking forward to doing mine this year for DS. Started it last year and I liked it.

New pjs, slippers, chocolate, mug, book. But I might take the idea above and put the Christmas plate for Father Christmas in there too for him to put out. Might even put a carrot in there for rudolf come to think of it.
