"A committee of MPs and peers has been set up to choose a gift "fit" for the Queen to mark the 70th anniversary of her accession, in 2022.
Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said it would be a "token of our respect". For her Diamond Jubilee in 2012, the Queen had a stained-glass window created for her in Westminster Hall."

The Queen has everything she could possibly need, and the money to buy anything she could want.

This gift will be funded by donations from MPs - of course, it's up to them how they want to spend their money - but at a time when so many of her subjects are struggling financially due to the impact of Covid19, I think it would be appropriate for the Queen to ask the MPs to make a donation to a UK charity instead of spending the money on a Platinum Jubilee gift.

This.

Zilla1 · 12/11/2020 18:38

Donation away from the Royal Family? Don't you understand the business model?

SchrodingersImmigrant · 12/11/2020 18:38

I don't think she has facebook so she could do that
"Because I am such a goodie, y'all just give money to my chosen charity. Here. Publicaly. Tata"

chantico · 12/11/2020 18:41

A platinum jubilee is so very rare that I think it should be marked.

A subscriptions from the Houses for a way in which to mark this event sounds fine to me. I don't think it'll be a personal gift to her - more likely to be a statue or painting (seeing as they've already had a stained window and renamed a bell tower)

SchrodingersImmigrant · 12/11/2020 18:44

Absolutely and it made me google and you are absolutely correct. It appears, on wiki, that there are only 3 with longer reign (for now...)

WitchesSpelleas · 12/11/2020 18:47

Yes, mark the anniversary by all means, but why with a gift? The Royal Family has many charities within its patronage - why not make a donation to, say, the Prince's Trust?

I'm no royalist, but you're being so unreasonable. To still be holding the title of Queen at her age, still be doing duties, it has to be recognised. To be perfectly blunt, it will probably be the last jubilee event we will celebrate for many years so who really cares if it's a bit gauche given recent times.

Oreservoir · 12/11/2020 18:52

I never more worried that they’ll jinx her by starting to plan already.
She’s 94.

Oreservoir · 12/11/2020 18:53

I’m not I never.

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 12/11/2020 18:55

But it’s not a gift for the queen really. It’s a gift for the nation and a permanent reminder of a very rare event.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 12/11/2020 18:57

This.

Its not like they'll club in for a Swarovski corgi shaped keyring that will stay in her bag. It will be something that will be somewhere public/historical to mark the achievement.

WoodYewBee · 12/11/2020 18:57

To a charity......but would that end up going on the top dogs bonuses!! Charity isn’t always the best option!

AppleKatie · 12/11/2020 18:57

It’s not like they will buy her more gold taps or jewellery...

Last time they bought a window at Westminster abbey you say? So a contribution to the national architecture? Something that can be enjoyed by millions of visitors over lots and lots of years?

I think if it’s a ‘gift to the queen’ that actually makes a contribution to making publicly available places more beautiful/attractive to visitors that sounds lovely.

OwlBeThere · 12/11/2020 18:57

‘A gift for the nation’ yes, I’m sure all those hungry kids will be thrilled with some fancy shite. Hmm

katy1213 · 12/11/2020 18:57

She'll be on AIBU later, saying I keep telling people I don't want portraits/spa days but they take no notice.

ApolloandDaphne · 12/11/2020 18:58

I haven't got an issue with this. The gift will be something which is placed in a prominent place and will be of historic importance in years to come.

AppleKatie · 12/11/2020 18:58

Yeh but MPs aren’t spending their money on hungry kids whatever so frankly we might as well get something out of them. 🤷‍♀️

PerseverancePays · 12/11/2020 19:00

Maybe a plaque to remind the nation of how much of her wealth is derived from slavery?

Completely agree

It's by separate subscription is it not? So it's not taking from any part of the publishing purse. So it's up to them. I like the idea.

I expect there will be quite a lot of people and organisations who decide to have commemorations. And I don't think it's right to tell them not to.

And @Oreservoir - I fervently hope that she is not jinxed by the plans. Nor the DofE, because of course that would make for a reflective event, not a joyous one

Ummm, yes.

The poor should never get to see nice things. Certainly not in their homes. And not in public places either. Churches and other public spaces should be as cheap and non-descript as we can make them, because we know that the poor have no real aesthetic sense. The well off can enjoy that sort of thing in private, paid from their own pockets.

This made me giggle. Thank you.

It can be enjoyed by -

  • People who live in London
  • People who can afford to visit London

A stained glass window in London won't bring much joy to a family in Newcastle who are relying on food banks to survive.

OP posts:
FrightClub · 12/11/2020 19:04

But which charity? And how much? And when? And who chooses it? And what about Cancer Research/ex-servicemen/lifeboats/sad donkeys, etc?

The MPs are paying for something historically significant to be added to a nationally important building, which will give craftsmen work, tourists something else to look at, and generally be a positive thing.

The tax payer isn't paying for it (unless you want to go down the 'we pay their wages' argument) and the Queen isn't stuck with yet another pointless painted goblet set.
