Completely confused about mattresses

DH is getting back pain and our mattress is old. It's so bad now, that he's waking every night and sitting up to sleep in the early hours.

I'm looking at different mattresses and they all claim to be 'the one' but then when you did deeper, the complaints are pretty similar - poor customer service and not honouring guarantees, with slippery get out clauses.

I've looked at Nectar, Rem-flex, Emma, Hypnia, Ergoflex, Otty, IKEA Havlog....I think that's it.

We need:
Good support
Not too hot
No roll together

We're side sleepers, DH 13st, Me 10.5st.

Any suggestions?

I bought a Sealy and am pleased with it. It cost a lot but I think you need to spend money on a good mattress. But I think you really need to try them out.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 12/11/2020 07:20

I swapped my old firm , memory foam mattress for a soft old fashioned type spring mattress because of being too hot and having a sore back. Also a side sleeper . I do sleep alone though so not sure how that would work with the rolling together thing. I am sleeping MUCH better.
I did go to benson's though and try lots out , they have amazing customer service and I paid to have the old mattress taken away.
I appreciate you probably want to buy on line though and not wait ( I had to wait 5 weeks ! )

mdh2020 · 12/11/2020 07:25

We went to Dreams and they have a diagnostic bed which you both lie on and it suggests the most suitable mattress. They ask you how you sleep. So far, we are happy with ours. The mattress is firm and we never roll together. They will deliver your mattress, take away the old one and , if you don’t like your new mattress, you can exchange it after 40 days.

Whilst researching mattresses I found this excellent guide to buying them.

I LOVE my Otty. Easy order and delivery and no follow up customer service needed as we love it. They smell a bit synthetic when they arrive but that goes in a few days. We paid it off monthly.
Took about a month for my back pain to completely subside so I panicked a bit but it just takes time for your body to get used to it. So I'd order a new matress ASAP tbh.

PleasantVille · 12/11/2020 07:28

I wouldn't buy a mattress without trying it out in a shop, I don't suppose they are classed as essential at the mont but it's such and individual thing I wouldn't go on somene else's recommendation alone.

MrDarcysMa · 12/11/2020 07:28

I hated dreams, they tried desperately to push us into buying their own brand even though I went in to buy a simba. Ended up walking out and ordering a different one completely.

Savoretti · 12/11/2020 07:32

I just bought an Otty. It’s really comfy but so warm. I’m on a 100 night trial and as soon as lockdown is over I will be choosing a more traditional one and sending it back. Such a shame as I do like it, but come Summer there is no way I will sleep if it’s too hot now.

Sunshiney1981 · 12/11/2020 07:34

We recently got a ‘Herdy’ mattress. We are side sleepers too. You get a 100 day trial too so if it doesn’t suit you you can send it back and get a full refund! It’s really comfortable, medium firmness, we’re sleeping well.

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 12/11/2020 07:48

I think you need to wait until you can try them out.

All the big name shops are disgracefully overpriced - Dreams, Bensons etc. We went an independent based out on an industrial site, they had more choice, and they really were a fraction of the price for the same quality.

dinglethedragon · 12/11/2020 07:48

I got a Casper - another online one with the 100 day refund - wish I'd done it years ago. It's transformed my sleep. The old one was bought by exh - who likes a really really firm mattress, I hated it.

Definitely recommend the Casper.

Girlintheframe · 12/11/2020 07:51

We got an Emma.
It's fine, nothing amazing.

ThankyouPeter · 12/11/2020 07:55

I will add Vispring to the list for you to research. We particularly liked the fact you can have a split tension as my husband prefers a much firmer mattress. My side is medium and his is firm but you can have any combination.

Lazypuppy · 12/11/2020 08:01

Go to dreams! Also, if you are getting too hot you need a mattress with the topper made of nstural material

Jasmin82 · 12/11/2020 08:10

I haven't had one for 6.5 years (abusive family member got rid of it out of spite), but the best mattress I've ever had was Myers.

ScrapThatThen · 12/11/2020 08:12

We went IKEA hovag and it's fine, good and firm and at least not mega bucks. They are all rubbish after a year or so imo.

cochineal7 · 12/11/2020 08:13

We love the one we have from Loaf.

RaspberryCoulis · 12/11/2020 08:18

Go and lie on them. We have just in the last week got a new mattress from Dreams, went along to the shop, narrowed down whether we want soft/firm, foam or sprung, lay on a few, decided which one we wanted. And they do some sort of guarantee that if yoy don't like it you can return within the first month.

I'd never ever buy that sort of thing online without trying first.

GoGoGone · 12/11/2020 08:24

Go to Dreams and try them. I think buying a mattress unseen online is a bit crazy. And stay away from memory foam if you get hot. They are just so horrible and sweaty. Go for loads of box springs and a wool/natural fibre topper. It really makes such a difference. I love my mattress but sadly we see now sleeping on DPs memory foam one because it's bigger and I am constantly too hot.

HardAsSnails · 12/11/2020 08:25

Premier Inn Hypnos deal for me, love their beds, and the wool topper is fab for heat regulating.

Saladseeds · 12/11/2020 08:28

John Lewis. Their own range with Yorkshire wool. Amazing, no roll. I'm a side sleeper and overweight. Daughter had a JL mattress which developed a slant and they replaced it.

Minkies13 · 12/11/2020 08:43

We used to have a Simba. Oh God, the back pain was bad. It was too soft, especially for my husband who has a terrible back. It ended up getting body grooves. We had it for 2 years then upgraded to John Lewis Ortho range. Our new bed is glorious! Husband sleeps so much better now.

Literallyfedup · 12/11/2020 08:49

Dunlopillo - they can be expensive but are made from latex instead of memory foam and therefore cooler. Also does not have springs so does not create pressure points. Don't roll at all and you can buy two singles even for a double bed so that both of you can have mattress firmness as you want. Comes with 5 year warranty and normally on discount around Christmas. You can also buy mattress with 200 cm length even for a single or double bed where most mattress are 190 cm.

IamMaz · 12/11/2020 08:53

We had to buy a new one last week. I suggested we just go for an established make - Sealy or Relyon or similar...
We wanted one with springs and NOT memory foam as we had one of those years ago and it was rubbish.
Try mattress on line?

I got my last mattress from Debenhams, they were really good and someone showed me round the mattresses and answered any questions I had.

Not sure where you are in the country to know what restrictions you have but I'd suggest going into Debenhams if/when you can
