Completely confused about mattresses

DH is getting back pain and our mattress is old. It's so bad now, that he's waking every night and sitting up to sleep in the early hours.

I'm looking at different mattresses and they all claim to be 'the one' but then when you did deeper, the complaints are pretty similar - poor customer service and not honouring guarantees, with slippery get out clauses.

I've looked at Nectar, Rem-flex, Emma, Hypnia, Ergoflex, Otty, IKEA Havlog....I think that's it.

We need:
Good support
Not too hot
No roll together

We're side sleepers, DH 13st, Me 10.5st.

Any suggestions?

I got EVE hybrid. Side sleeper, turning a lot. If the pain is a neck area it can be a pillow or sleeping style overall. We got DH shaped memory foam pillow and pain stopped.

Eve will have black friday sales on amazon now too.

ViSpring.

Best bed I’ve ever bought (5 years old and still so comfortable) and when it goes to shit I’ll buy another ViSpring!

TheFairyCaravan · 12/11/2020 09:03

We’ve got the IKEA Hovag in medium firm.

I’ve got a really bad back, pelvis and hips. We’ve had memory foam and it was awful, when I mentioned it to my spinal and pelvic surgeons they both said they don’t recommended them. So we bought a no roll together orthopaedic one. It was better, but not brilliant. I put up with it because it was £££ and I didn’t want to waste anymore money. However this time last year I couldn’t stand it anymore so went to IKEA. DH said get the one I felt was the best. We tried them all. Went for a wander and lunch, came back and it was still the Hovag and was an absolute bargain at £229. We’re both so much better in the mornings now. It’s absolutely brilliant. We’ve bought them for the kid’s rooms too.

DaddysGirlForLife · 12/11/2020 09:05

We went to Dreams a few months ago. They get you to lay on a bed that tells you whether you need medium, firm etc mattress and then they show you all that is available in that range. I absolutely love my new mattress. So comfy and perfect.

DonLewis · 12/11/2020 09:10

I think all the Eve, Otty, Simba are the same really.

The choice comes down to memory foam, pocket sprung, or a combination.

I bought my teenage son a new mattress. He went for pocket sprung with a pillow top. It's really lovely.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 12/11/2020 09:14

We went to Dreams, listened to his speech and used that to try other shops.

No idea who the ones we have are made by, they are comfortable but have very deep buttons. Deep enough to lose a knee, or boob, down. So we also have memory foam toppers, from Dunelm.

These are the most comfortable beds I have ever slept on!

Luzina · 12/11/2020 09:15

I bought a Relyon from Land of Beds online (my sister has the same one so we’d tried it at her house and knew it would be the right one for us). We ordered it in Sept, it was due 24 October. It has been delayed to 24 November due to Covid related logistics issues. I’m not convinced it will get to me before Xmas. I wish we’d bought from JL now.

choirmumoftwo · 12/11/2020 09:28

We have an IKEA sprung mattress which I'm sure is fine but for us, it's the mattress topper that makes all the difference, also Ikea. We've never slept better and after 2.5 years, it's still great. I'll check the names if you like OP.

Holox · 12/11/2020 09:37

I'll second Lonecat's recommendation for John Ryan. Love our mattress and customer service was amazing. It's online sales but with great advice and a genuine no quibble return policy.

We had originally bought from Dreams, we had tried in store. Did us no good as the mattress was poorly made and was sagging terribly within a few months. It was deemed faulty and replaced but the same thing happened again within a couple of months. Had a battle to get a refund. We had also bought a divan base and headboard from them, the base arrived damaged and the headboard broke at around the 10 month point. Avoid!

ToeTouchingTitties · 12/11/2020 09:40

Don’t know about your budget, but I had a similar issue to your husband. I bought a John Ryan Artisan Natural and topped it with a Devon Duvet wool topper. The BEST money I ever spent.

Like most people, I imagine I spend more time in bed than anywhere else, so I don’t begrudge the cost.

They also do seconds/marked mattresses and their customer service is top notch.

rbe78 · 12/11/2020 09:59

Definitely wait until you can try some out in the shop.

In the meantime, has your DH tried sleeping on the floor? Sounds counter-intuitive, but there's something about a couple of nights on a really hard surface that can really sort your back out.

I can recommend the wool room. Weve just bought the herdwick and its perfect - not too soft but not too firm and all natural.

Lougle · 12/11/2020 10:18

Wow, so many suggestions, thank you! Everywhere is shut right now, so trying them out will have to wait. I think the warmth will be a problem with memory foam. I like the idea of the topper.

I used to work in a big name bed shop and honestly you need to try some to find your best match. Don't be pressured into buying one though. Go try some then look online, see what composition suits you both best and go from there. For memory foam you can get ones with a cool cover which really does help.

If money is no issue then Tempur Cool touch Original is on you want to look at. It takes some getting used to but once you're used to it it's like sleeping on air, reduces the tossing and turning, you won't feel the other move and it supports your back. (DO NOT buy from Tempur website as you'll pay a grand more than retailer).

If you're on more of a budget try an own brand from any of the shops with a firm rating (very firm will be too hard for your weight as you need to sink in a little but medium might end up dipping after prolonged use) or if they do a medium/firm.

Split tension is also good as you can have a softer side for you and a harder side for your husband as he's having back issues. The only problem with these is when you rotate the mattress you'll have to swap sides of the bed.

BeHappyAndSmile · 12/11/2020 12:05

Oh and also if you get the right mattress you shouldn't need a topper. They're more of a fix for the wrong mattress.

TheNestedIf · 12/11/2020 12:12

I bought an Emma recently.

DP and I are both side sleepers and he is much heavier than me. It has certainly stopped the roll-together problems we were having with the previous mattress although that, to be fair, was also the fault of the bed which I replaced at the same time.

I did have lower back pain for a long while. We've been using the Emma for around 6 - 8 weeks now and the back pain has all but gone.

As a bonus, it's not as hot as my previous mattress.

Lougle · 12/11/2020 12:57

How do you decide between latex and memory foam?

I think I'm leaning towards pocket sprung, just because I like the sides of the mattress to stay firm when you sit on them.

DH was convinced that a very firm mattress was needed. But I think he's coming around to the idea that this isn't necessarily true.

FlyingByTheSeatof · 12/11/2020 14:05

If you get hot at night avoid the memory foam ones.

Bramshott · 12/11/2020 14:15

DEFINITELY try them!! We had a nightmare a couple of years ago buying online and had to return three Blush mattresses as unsuitable (the company we ordered from offered free returns where you just pay a collection charge). The first one was too hot (latex), the second one ridiculously firm, the third one too soft. In the end we went with a Harrison one which is a traditional pocket sprung mattress with medium tension. There is almost too much choice these days!

Jubaju · 12/11/2020 14:20

Loaf do amazing mattresses. The one with the pillow top is amazing 😴😴😴

We got our new mattress during the first lockdown, so they were still delivering then and so I imagine they will be during this lockdown too. The only issue was that they weren't able to take the old one away at the time, so we had to keep hold of it until the tip reopened.

We used happybeds.co.uk and bought the 'Tennyson 4000 Twin Pocket Sprung Air Flow Orthopaedic Natural Fillings Mattress' for £370, which is about half the RRP. We are similar weights to you and your DH and are both side sleepers too. We've found it incredibly comfortable - in fact it was SO lovely, that we decided to treat ourselves to all new duvet and pillows too - getting into bed now is a total joy!

Lougle · 12/11/2020 20:41

So many options! I'll have to draw up a spreadsheet Grin

I highly recommend this company johnryanbydesign.co.uk/

Choccyp1g · 13/11/2020 11:24

My theory is that all bar the very cheap ones are super for a couple of years, and then they go downhill (literally)

After 2 years, my very expensive one was noticeably saggy on the side I sleep. The man in the shop said, " you need to swap your sleeping position around", but surely that makes no sense as a double mattress is designed for 2 people. So I swapped to sleeping on the other side, and 2 years later, both sides are equally rubbish.

It would work out cheaper to get a new basic one every couple of years. Not good for the environment though.

We got one in March. Easy to order online. Quick delivery. My husband says most days "I can't believe how comfortable this mattress is". It really is sooo comfortable. No roll together. It's softish which worried me at first but very supportive. Highly recommend.
