Completely confused about mattresses

DH is getting back pain and our mattress is old. It's so bad now, that he's waking every night and sitting up to sleep in the early hours.

I'm looking at different mattresses and they all claim to be 'the one' but then when you did deeper, the complaints are pretty similar - poor customer service and not honouring guarantees, with slippery get out clauses.

I've looked at Nectar, Rem-flex, Emma, Hypnia, Ergoflex, Otty, IKEA Havlog....I think that's it.

We need:
Good support
Not too hot
No roll together

We're side sleepers, DH 13st, Me 10.5st.

Any suggestions?

We got a Hypnos Orthos Elite wool mattress in firm. Went and tried lots and lots out and wanted something with lots of pocketsprings so we didn't roll together. The wool top is good for keeping you cool and they have a good warranty. I hate memory foam ones - too hot and also because I move a lot in my sleep and it's like hitting concrete when I turn my body over. I also tried ones at M&S and John Lewis, but preferred the Hypnos. Definitely worth investing in for something that you spend so much time in.

pocket sprung with a memory foam top is my ideal

We got a Hypnos mattress as the premier inn beds are always so comfy. Had it about 2 years and still so comfy. Agree with others that memory foam is too warm.

I bought one from an online company. Cost about £800. It arrived reeking of cigarette smoke and, despite scrubbing with bicarb and vaccuming many many times, now (a year later) I can still smell smoke. Company never replied to any of my emails.

Be very careful where you buy from!!

Oh dear I see someone upthread has recommended that company 🤦‍♀️

Recently got a memory foam mattress which is incredibly comfortable but was making me very hot. Found a simple solution. Sewed together 6 feet lengths of thick100% cotton then folded them, concertina fashion, to make 2’6” wide bundle. Ended up with six layers of fabric. Sewed top, sides and bottom then sewed a few lines from side to side, about a foot apart to, keep the layers in place. Slept with it under the fitted sheet last night and it was bliss. Will make a simple cotton cover for it. What a relief not to have to find a cooler mattress. Hope this helps others solve their hot mattress problem.

I have had a nectar mattress for over 5 years now. It is still in excellent condition, no sagging, super comfortable, still feels like a cloud to sleep on but it is very hot to sleep on.

We got ours from Feather and Black, we have different firmnesses on each side. It's lasted us a good 5 years and still going strong. Expensive but worth the money so far and we got interest free credit through the store. Like other PPs, I would not spend on a mattress without both having tried it out.

We run a holiday let, and bought our beds having loved the comfort of Travelodge beds, I think it's called the Travelodge Dreamer. Everyone who's stayed with us over the last 5 years has raved about how comfortable the beds are.

Just in case other posters haven't noticed, this post was started in 2020, so doubt it's relevant to OP now, but have posted in case anyone else is looking.

Harrison, hand made in Yorkshire.Summer and winter just turn the mattress. On a double you chose the firmness on each half.Very comfortable, very pleased with ours.JL sell them as do bed stores..

Avoid all the boxed ones. I really recommend going to a store and trying them. I know it's only a short lie down each time but it does really help. And they tend to be better quality and won't lose their shape so much.

I had a simba and honestly it was shit after a few months because it sagged so much.
