Never made one before but found a box in the cupboard... I think it'll be fine to eat - do you?

I would!

cushioncovers · 11/11/2020 14:00

Yeah eat it and let us know how it goes

iMatter · 11/11/2020 14:05

It will probably taste stale.

I wouldn't bother but if you do can you tell us what it's like!

AlexisIsMySpiritAnimal · 11/11/2020 14:07

It's a dry mix, nothing to really "go off" in it. I'd definitely crack on with that.

DartmoorChef · 11/11/2020 14:07

Its a best before so it will be ok.

FrightClub · 11/11/2020 14:08

it might be a bit flat if the raising agents have lost a bit of oomph over time but it'll probably taste fine.

Ginkypig · 11/11/2020 14:10

The only thing that might scupper the plan is if it has a raising agent in the mix and if that has stopped working the cake won’t rise as well.

But I’ve had packets of Bicarb etc still have ok 5years after the best before!

Ginkypig · 11/11/2020 14:11

Post a picture!

DreadingSeason2020sFinale · 11/11/2020 14:27

It'll be fine. Could throw in a tiny bit of bicarb if you're not sure?

DespairingHomeowner · 11/11/2020 15:04

It should be just fine ... I’d add an extra tsp of baking powder

CastleOfDoom · 11/11/2020 15:42

Yes I would. Let us know what it tastes like if you don't keel over after eating it Grin

Crafting1Queen · 11/11/2020 16:07

It'll be fine. I found a Betty Crocker ginger cake mix at the back of my (ground floor) cupboard the other week - bb Dec 2017, baked it, and it was absolutely fine, especially delicious with a big mug of tea Grin.

Feedingthebirds1 · 11/11/2020 16:08

I wouldn't. The mixes have fat in them, which by now will have gone rancid. Open the packet and sniff.

Notcontent · 11/11/2020 16:18

It’s likely to taste stale.

Justnormajean · 11/11/2020 16:31

Read the ingredients. If it’s basically flour and sugar, and you add the oil, or eggs, or milk, then it should be fine, maybe a little flat.
If it’s got fat in it give a good sniff in case it has turned rancid.

TrickyD · 11/11/2020 16:48

It says best before, not poisonous after. Give it a go.

HouseOfHearts · 11/11/2020 19:53

Decided to risk it and made it. We've all finished it off - and so far we're all still hereGrin

Didn't taste stale and rose like a normal cake. Thanks all for the advice.

For the poster who asked for a photo - sorry, I read your request after it had all gone.
