Smellies.

What an ugly word for something as nice as beauty or bath products.

Booze.

So SLOPPY sounding. BOOZE...no...no...no.

@MeepyMupp

'The missus' . They usually have a partner who refer to them as 'hubby or hubs' . For some reason the older I get the more it annoys the hell out of me.
Oh I hate hubby! Not mine obviously 😂 but the word hubby. I found myself referring to DH as ‘the hubster’ the other week and was almost sick in my mouth.
MeepyMupp · 11/11/2020 21:07

When I was a child, my mother referred to my Dad one day , out of the blue, as Bubs, he turned to her with a WTF look on his face and went into the garden in disgust. She had never done it before as since . I would also like to add when people say 'My lovely.' I know its meant to be nice but always strikes me as patronising and fake for unknown reasons, I hate it.

VanquishGirl · 11/11/2020 21:09

I agree with so many of these!

'Sexy' is the worst word!

MonroeM · 11/11/2020 21:18

@Nsky

See you later by strangers, hope not should the answer
AAARRRGGGHHHH you reminded me of another one,

"laterz"

Then there are the Christmas ones. Putting up the "deckies" and I don't like the word "Crimbo"

I am beginning to sound pathetic now but it is the OP's fault for starting this! Confused

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 11/11/2020 21:19

'Narcissist'. This is a rare condition but you'd never think so. Every second person reckons someone they know is a narc, and the ratio of people competent to diagnose them is apparently even higher.

Corporate-babble like 'blue sky thinking' instantly screams 'I am a wanker'.

Dangling modifiers. Any dangling modifier.

'Sanpro'.

On a similar note, 'menstruator' is simply repulsive.

Slag, tart, floozy (or any other pejorative intending to censor women's sexual behaviour, for which there is no male equivalent). Unfortunately those recently seem to be making a comeback.

'GPDR' and 'copyright' are two words that have lately caused me more headaches than any other words I know.

Or how about 'Line Manager'. Where's the line?

'Asking for a friend'. No you're not, and it's a meaningless disclaimer anyway. Own your shit.

Oh - and what's 'bae?' The only context in which I've ever heard that before is 'British Aerospace ...'

MeepyMupp · 11/11/2020 21:32

Making Love, Made Love, Make Love. No thank you, not if you refer to it as that ! Makes my skin crawl. It's an older phrase but , I for one, am glad it is not common now as it must of been in the past. I don't think I could bring myself to have sex.

CharitySchmarity · 11/11/2020 21:37

YY to "teddy" when it's not a bear.

"Plate up" instead of "dish up" - I think I've only ever seen this one on here!

"Baby names" - very widespread, but illogical because names are usually for life!

"Passed away"

"Bad" for injured, e.g. "he's got a bad knee"

"Poorly" - I prefer "ill," or if it's something really minor, "not well." Particularly dislike it when someone says someone is "really poorly" when they actually mean they're dying - it sounds as if it means they've got a worse than average cold or something!

"Pooch"

"Kitty" (as in cat - it's OK if you're talking about pooling your money!)

"Baby" for someone who is clearly a toddler

"Telly" - but it's worse when people spell it "tele" - my mind wants to pronounce that "teal!"

"Store" for "shop," if the speaker is not American. Seems to be common in shops themselves now, loudspeakers announcing that the "store" will be closing in X minutes.

And come to think of it - "close/closing." I'm definitely BU here, there's nothing wrong with the word in theory, I just don't like it as a collection of sounds.

CovidStoleTheRainbow · 11/11/2020 22:14

I think the word lesbian is pretty rubbish.

Homosexual is fine, gay is great! But lesbian? It sounds like a type of Scorpian.
Women really pulled the short straw there. (Again).

Bluetonic41 · 11/11/2020 22:31

'Completed suicide' a new pc term apparently which I really can't bear
Gentle - as in the context of 'gentle hugs' and such like

fucknuckle · 11/11/2020 22:47

@Bluetonic41 the language around death by suicide has been changed to reflect that taking ones own life is no longer considered a crime. i agree however that the tone of ‘completed’ isn’t quite right.

i prefer ‘died by suicide’, it’s a weird thing to have a preference about but i’ve lost two people in two weeks to suicide and it’s a little raw.

Reach out (to you)

Crankley · 11/11/2020 23:17

There are a lot of things I hate, starting with could/would/should OF instead of HAVE. Incorrect use of myself'. At one time one would say eg 'my DH, DC and I' whereas most on here say 'myself, DH and DC which is wrong. I hate when people say borrowed instead of loaned, ie 'I borrowed my friend my dress.' Hate 'invite' instead of 'invitation'. Hate 'toilet' 'lounge' 'settee'. The thing that makes me laugh the most and I have only heard it used on here is 'front bottom'. I've never heard anything so ridiculous. Mixed up tenses eg 'myself and DC had went to...' or ' only now has he took ....'

TheDowagerDuchess · 11/11/2020 23:35

Bin lids instead of kids (why? It's longer to both say and type, no logic).

^^
Oh my god who says this? Bin lids is a racist rhyming slang for Jewish people (don’t want to type the word!). Someone’s seriously got the wrong end of the stick!

melisma · 11/11/2020 23:54

"Bung" so often seen in the context of a recipe on here, as in "oh just mix it all together and then bung it the oven". It just really pisses me off - something about the "cooking is SOOO easy" smugness conveyed in that one word!

Username2ElectricBoogaloo · 12/11/2020 00:29

Reaching out to for contacting.

Plating up. Stop it.

Longline, used to describe clothing. Why not long? Which line?

Product: hairdressers make it sound as though someone's left bodily fluid in your hair.

Pretentious online reviews for face creams. 'My skin drinks this in.' 'I complete my routine by pressing the elixir into my skin.' Just put the stuff on your face. There.

Recipes can get annoying, as well. 'Clap on the lid' made my eyes twitch the other day. It just seems a really smug way to put the lid on your saucepan.

I was looking at coats on eBay one winter, and a seller had listed the materials as wool, velvet, and lapin. By lapin she meant dead rabbit, but by putting it in French she was somehow trying to elevate it to something beyond dead rabbit. I didn't buy the coat. It had dead rabbit on it.

thecatsarecrazy · 12/11/2020 00:33

Pudding. Don't know why
And when people say game changer that irks me

FortunesFave · 12/11/2020 00:42

I hate "My love"

You see it on here when someone posts in distress and someone else posts to comfort them

"OH my love..."

I just don't like it.

Famalan

littlebitupset · 12/11/2020 01:43

I've always hated the word knickers. Just seems rude. I prefer pants. Sounds more M&S proper.

Totally illogical.

salsmum · 12/11/2020 02:18

Crimbo makes me want to kill someone.

allthewaterinthetap · 12/11/2020 02:42

On a slight tangent, I do enjoy the tabloids using the word 'insists', eg: "I won the election," insisted Trump. I'm autistic, but I know it is code-speak for "They are talking bollocks".
