To be so upset about mink fur farming and I can’t believe it’s legal.

I think this is one of the most disgustingly inhumane industries I could imagine. What can I do? I’ve read today that France at least has banned mink-farming from now on, and Holland has also closed all farms permanently off the back of this Covid Outbreak, But Denmark?? Wtf are you doing? I thought you were a civilised society! Any country which allows this should be ashamed. I guess the one positive of Covid is that it’s shining a light on these appalling industries. People who work in this trade deserve a lot worse than bankruptcy and Covid. I don’t know how they can live with themselves.

*pig farmers (but pug farmers too!)

Mebeline · 09/11/2020 14:54

I see the ops point entirely.

It is shocking.

The way humans treat animals is disgusting.

bloggeryblog · 09/11/2020 14:55

Me too misty. We are seeing a lot of positive changes at the moment. I try to focus on that but it is difficult :(

TheQueef · 09/11/2020 14:55

Did you think fur farming was banned in Europe?

DontCryForMeNextdoorNeighbour · 09/11/2020 14:55

Totally agree OP. Sad

quest1on · 09/11/2020 14:55

I think if people keep animals in disgusting conditions - whether this be in Chinese wet markets, battery farming or the fur trade - then there’s a disease outbreak as a resulting these disgusting practises, then yes, I hope they are first in line to catch it. No sympathy from me.

Its no worse than animals grown to be slaughtered for meat.

However, anyone who wishes covid, financial ruin or living in a cage for another person is no more or less barbaric than mink fur farm owners, chicken farm owners etc.

You can’t pretend to find mink farming awful then wish awful things on a person.

Mebeline · 09/11/2020 14:56

I look forward to all those industries that trade on the suffering of the innocent dying out, just hope I live to see it.

While this is harsh, on the whole I agree with it especially if those livlihoods can be replaced by something that isn't harmful to the environment or others.

Mebeline · 09/11/2020 14:57

So bizarre.

actual skinning of animals

Vs

Thinking an unkind thought, unlikely to come true

Confused
peachescariad · 09/11/2020 14:59

Go to Dover and see the live animal export from the UK....that's just as shocking

Catlover77 · 09/11/2020 15:01

I was also v surprised at Denmark, for the exact reasons you state OP. I have no sympathy for the mink farm owners who are now suffering financially

Maireas · 09/11/2020 15:01

Denmark is one of the biggest exporters of mink. It has huge mink farms. People think because it's Scandi it must be all vegan, wholesome and kind. Nope.

WeAllHaveWings · 09/11/2020 15:02

There are plenty of organisations you can join or donate regularly to OP if you feel strongly, and would be more effective than posting on a parenting forum.

quest1on · 09/11/2020 15:05

SimonJT - I’m sure you would have no problem wishing financial ruin, illness or living in a cage to someone who traffics humans - or keeps humans in cages / filthy conditions.

I genuinely don’t see any difference.

As humans we have choices. These people have made their choices and they deserve all they get.

@Mistymonday

Vegan and yes it is abhorrent. I agree they should all close down all fur farms for good and I have no sympathy for the skin traders. Mind you, I also feel like this about dairy farmers, pug farmers and puppy farmers and fish farmers and fishermen. I look forward to all those industries that trade on the suffering of the innocent dying out, just hope I live to see it.
I agree,
Ponoka7 · 09/11/2020 15:09

It was the minks with newborn kits just in bare cages that shocked me. I thought there'd be some semblance of a nest provided.

I think even meat eaters can comment on this. They were throwing them straight into outdoor wood chippers until it was shown on television. Then the gassing started. A few nearly escaped on camera. So care isn't being taken to contain it.

kennelmaid · 09/11/2020 15:12

We humans are disgustingly selfish in the way we treat animals and our earth and we are all implicit in it, in one way or another - 99.9% of us are anyway. I'd like to think that the changes we have started to make will gather momentum and make a difference before it's too late.

Male chicks are thrown into electric grinders as they're a waste product of the egg industry. I wasn't actually aware of this until last year so hopefully this thread will encourage some of the people reading this to look into where their food comes from.
quest1on · 09/11/2020 15:14

I hope so kennel.

OP posts:
kennelmaid · 09/11/2020 15:15

@Mistymonday I completely agree. I doubt I'll live to see it but we have to believe that it can happen.

Tiktaktoe · 09/11/2020 15:17

Upset/disgusted by it I get, but shocked? Are you very young?

picklemewalnuts · 09/11/2020 15:19

Denmark has poor animal welfare standards. I don't eat danish pork/bacon as a result. Very intensive. They may be enlightened in some ways, but not all.

I buy British meat, free range eggs, and try and reduce how much we consume.

However fur is an important clothing resource in countries with severe winters. I don't object on principal, assuming ethically produced and practical rather than fashionable.

1940s · 09/11/2020 15:21

Dairy industry is abhorrent. If you hate fur farming then look at dairy. I think it's hypocritical to complain unless you're a vegan

EstuaryBird · 09/11/2020 15:21

Amazing how many people I know who are suddenly ridden with angst about mink farming when they hadn’t given it a thought before.

This has been an animal welfare issue for decades but most people haven’t been that bothered. Still, at least now all the poor little sods will be dead and out of their abject misery.

quest1on · 09/11/2020 15:23

pickle - but when people go on Arctic expeditions or up mountains etc, they hardly traipse off in fur do they? There are far more ethical ways to produce clothing for severe winters these days. We have the technology - we’re no longer living in caves.
