Sweetcorn is so wrong

If it's for the family I would do whatever people like but if for guests I don't know well I would do something that is fairly old fashioned and popular with a roast; cabbage or brocolli, carrots, green beans, sprouts etc.

Vanillaradio · 08/11/2020 20:42

Sweet corn is the one thing I really can't eat! We always have parsnips and then some combination out of carrots, broccoli, cauliflower cheese, green beans.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 08/11/2020 20:43

I’m not a fan of serving too much roasted veg with a roast. Potato’s yes, then either parsnips or butternut squash. Other than that I like steamed carrots, broccoli, green beans, leeks. Cauliflower either steamed or blanched then dry baked in the oven.

GiraffeNecked · 08/11/2020 20:53

This has brought back memories of my mum‘S roast dinner in the 80s. I’d forgotten we always had sweet corn. Wouldn’t even think of it now...

spongedog · 08/11/2020 21:01

@AtleastitsnotMonday

I went out with a bloke who served a roast with green peppers, creamed spinach and courgettes. That was the end of that!
But bless him, he was trying! How do you cream spinach and does it taste any better?
ChronicallyCurious · 08/11/2020 21:08

We have roasted carrots, parsnips, roast potatoes, mash, peas, cauliflower cheese and broccoli. Now it’s the season we will also be having sprouts. Have a roast every second Sunday

VestaTilley · 08/11/2020 21:11

Veg on a roast here is usually carrot & swede mash, sprouts or Savoy cabbage, peas, maybe cauliflower or cauliflower cheese. Red cabbage if cooking goose or pork. Roast potatoes obvs.

I don’t really like roasted veg, eg roasted carrots and onions - and it’s not part of a traditional English roast dinner anyway!

VestaTilley · 08/11/2020 21:11

Though yes to parsnips!

pontiouspilates · 08/11/2020 21:13

Broccolli or cauliflower with asparagus and some roasted carrots with roasts for us. Occasionally spring greens with lots of butter and black pepper. Not peas and definitely not sweetcorn!

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 08/11/2020 21:16

Sweet corn & gravy is weird.

Cauliflower cheese & gravy is weird.

My ideal would be Brocolli, Roast Parsnips, Roast Carrots, Brussels/kale/kalettes.

Yorkshire Puddings, Roast potatoes & NO meat (vegetarian!!)

Otamot · 08/11/2020 21:22

I boil up corn on the cob, broccoli, peas, cauliflower and cabbage with a roast. The roast is meat, potatoes, parsnips, yams, pumpkins, onions and stuffing.

Gravy does not touch the corn as I spoon it sparingly over the potatoes and meat only.

It's our only big cooked meal some weeks so we pig out!

ColinKnocksTwoPence · 08/11/2020 21:42

Carrots, roasted parsnip, cauliflower, broccoli, mashed swede, leeks, occasionally cabbage. Sometimes courgette in the summer.
Never sweetcorn or peas.

Mayvis · 08/11/2020 21:49

We always have sweetcorn. It’s my favourite vegetable.

Whatwouldnanado · 08/11/2020 21:49

We had corn on the cob today with roast chicken, it's a favourite. Also served roast potatoes, roast sweet potatoes, cauli cheese, broccoli, peas, carrots, spinach, bread sauce and gravy.

SwimmingOnEggshells · 08/11/2020 22:47

My lovely MIL does the most awful vegetables with roasts. The norm for her is:

Sweetcorn
Boiled celery, no seasoning. Just pain.
Mixed frozen veg
Boiled cauliflower, no seasoning, no sauce
Broccoli boiled within an inch of its life which is cooked 4 hours earlier and kept in the oven on warm

Angry

Christmas dinner is much the same (sweetcorn with Christmas dinner!!! Shock) Thankfully the company is good!

MustardMitt · 09/11/2020 15:01

Omg @SwimmingOnEggshells that sounds awful! Has she been taking instruction from my grandma? Twenty minutes to pressure cook broccoli is her thing Grin

Potatoes and parsnips don’t count here for you cheaters!

IceniWarrior · 09/11/2020 15:06

Yesterday we had honey roasted carrots, parsnips and red onions. Rosemary and garlic roasted spuds. Sprouts, broccoli and peas. Cauliflower cheese as my veggie option.

Sometimes have swede and carrot mash, leafy greens, red cabbage.

flaviaritt · 09/11/2020 15:16

Carrots and sprouts or broccoli. Not sweetcorn.

loobyloo1234 · 09/11/2020 16:32

Green veg only for me on Roast Dinners - not a fan of carrots anyway - but sweetcorn? Eurgh. Just no. They're too strong tasting for a roast dinner surely? Confused

OnceUponAThread · 09/11/2020 16:56

Love sweetcorn on a roast. I like to have roasted carrots, broccoli, peas, cauliflower cheese and spuds at least, but will often do cabbage or spring greens as well. The more veg the better for me - but deffo sweetcorn

unmarkedbythat · 09/11/2020 16:58

Whatever I've got. Ideal would be carrots, parsnips, broccoli and peas, but anything at all (other than sprouts because I really dislike them) is fine. Even sweetcorn ;)

JamminDoughnuts · 09/11/2020 19:31

I like sweetcorn with tuna, in a jacket potato, and in a beany chilli, and with breaded fish,

Fleetwoodmacs · 09/11/2020 19:33

I love sweetcorn.. but a roast is just not the place for it.

GrumpyHoonMain · 09/11/2020 19:33

@JamminDoughnuts

Sweetcorn is so wrong
Why? It and Mogo are often staples in a Kenyan style roast chicken dinner. Tastes so good.
spongedog · 09/11/2020 19:44

Mogo?? Please tell.
