Sweetcorn is so wrong

At least two colours, three types of vegetables. Plus raw carrot sticks. This can include sweetcorn and often does.

And roast is compulsory on Sunday evening in this house.

spongedog · 08/11/2020 20:01

Our roast (meat for DC, veggie for me) has potatoes, carrots, peas, broccoli, beans, butternut squash and parsnips. Also red cabbage. And often sweetcorn. And cauli-cheese. I do this at least monthly. But I forget to do gravy and yorkshires. And never kale - food of the devil.

I hate cooking puds - so this way we are all so full no-one needs a pud!

DaphneFanshaw · 08/11/2020 20:01

I had roasted cauliflower, peas and carrots today. We were going to have Savoy cabbage too but it had gone all papery.
Sweet corn on a roast is incredibly wrong.

WaterOffADucksCrack · 08/11/2020 20:02

Sweetcorn is the superior vegetable in any situation! Delicious whenever, wherever!

dementedpixie · 08/11/2020 20:03

Ds has corn on the cob with his as she doesn't like many other vegetables

LoseLooseLucy · 08/11/2020 20:04

Sweet corn and cauliflower cheese doesn’t belong on a roast.

TartanDMs · 08/11/2020 20:06

No to sweetcorn. Yes to cauliflower cheese, mangetout, parsnips, swede, cabbage, sprouts, peas, mushy peas, courgettes, leeks - if it's green or cream it's in Grin

littlepeas · 08/11/2020 20:08

Swede, parsnips, sprouts and PEAS! Also potatoes, but don’t know if they count. No to sweetcorn.

itssquidstella · 08/11/2020 20:12

Today we had roast parsnips and carrots with steamed cavolo nero. You definitely need something fresh and green with a roast!

katy1213 · 08/11/2020 20:16

Beetroot with a roast is way weirder than sweetcorn.

Nottherealslimshady · 08/11/2020 20:18

The only food that doesn't belong on roasts is bloody brussel sprouts!

Whenlifegivesyoulimoncello · 08/11/2020 20:19

I used to agree but DH introduces me to sweetcorj on a roast and I muss confess it is tasty and does go very well when gravy.

mrsm43s · 08/11/2020 20:22

My go to is carrots, cabbage (or kale or brussels), swede and parnsips.

Welcome additions are cauli cheese, braised red cabbage, roasted butternut squash, broccoli, peas, green beans, roast beetroot, marrow. Obviously not all at once.

SunshineCake · 08/11/2020 20:24

No stupid food rules here. We have what we want when we want. My roast dinners are varied and rarely have the exact same combination.

1Morewineplease · 08/11/2020 20:25

I'll be honest and say, other than in the cob at barbecues , I can't think how sweetcorn adds anything to any meal.
Maybe in a salad of some description.
Otherwise no.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 08/11/2020 20:27

Courgettes should never be anywhere near gravy imo

I'd argue courgettes should never be anywhere Grin

I would do roast vegetables (except courgettes and aubergines ) but no meat .

Idunnoyou · 08/11/2020 20:29

I buy the mixed veg which has swettcorn in it.

MadDoggoLady · 08/11/2020 20:30

Green beans are the best!

Takethewinefromtheswine · 08/11/2020 20:31

Sweetcorn, broccoli and courgette do not go with gravy.
In an ideal world, sweetcorn should be eaten with crispy pancakes and alphabites, but I appreciate it is not 1986 anymore.

Roystonv · 08/11/2020 20:35

Had this exact discussion with dh last week. I said never, he couldn't see the problem. We cook loads of veg round roast - turnip, carrots, leeks, sweet potato, courgette, parsnips. Always 'garden' peas as dh insists on calling them to wind me up. He will not eat broccoli, beans, mange tout and similar. Pain in the proverbial.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 08/11/2020 20:35

I went out with a bloke who served a roast with green peppers, creamed spinach and courgettes. That was the end of that!

Simplyunacceptable · 08/11/2020 20:37

Totally agree. I don’t like peas with it either. For me it’s carrots, broccoli, parsnips and cauliflower cheese. Sometimes sprouts if it’s autumn/winter time.

JaceLancs · 08/11/2020 20:39

I probably wouldn’t do sweet corn or peas
We usually have cauliflower cheese, Brussel sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, green beans, carrots, parsnips, mash etc

TheOriginalMrsMoss · 08/11/2020 20:40

@Kelzbelz87

I love sweet corn with a roast! I have onion rings too which is apparantly is super weird lol
ONION RINGS! That's more of an abomination than sweetcorn Grin
Kelzbelz87 · 08/11/2020 20:42

I know, I’m aware it’s terrible! Anyone who I’ve ever cooked a roast for is horrified! I love it though, only if its a gammon roast though!
