Which combination of A levels?

DD cannot decide which A levels to choose next year. She has on her list;

English Lit and Lang
Biology
Psychology
Sociology

Currently hitting targets of 6/7 in all subjects apart from English which is an 8. Also isn't 100% set on what to study at University level but is thinking possibly Psychology.

I'm more worried about the content of these subjects, don't want her to be snowed under!

Luckily she really enjoys chemistry, its physics she doesn't enjoy (and after studying it myself as part of my degree I agree with her!). But I will give her a heads up about that so thank you.

She will be doing the EPQ too.

Her passion used to be art and I always thought she would do that at A level and something related at uni but a horrible teacher has really killed her love for it sadly. Its a shame because she is a very talented artist.

I would say that Biology is quite a tough subject without either maths or chemistry. I have taught very successful students with Bio, Psych and English but they were straight 8/9 GCSE students to start with.
The key is to hit the ground running with Biology. Start revising, doing past paper questions, reading ahead straight away, especially without Chemistry the first few modules can be a bit of an eye opener.

But, obviously biased here, Biology is the best and most useful subject you could possibly take. Grin

Have a chat with head of sixth form - see if they can have a word with her about the art. Lit Lang, psych and art would be a fab mix. If her chemistry is good (and you can’t get art to fly) psych, bio and lit Lang will open more doors than sociology in terms of subject options. However, if she has ideas of what she wants and is unlikely to be swayed sociology, psych, lit Lang are realistically going to give her higher grades and give her a greater choice of specific courses. Hope that makes sense...

Have to agree with @BioTeacher2020, a good bio grade will open a lot of doors in the future.

She does need to be aware of the statistical content of a psychology degree if she is not keen on maths.

Sparticuscaticus · 08/11/2020 20:15

If she wants to do psychology at a good uni then your ideal A levels are Maths, a science (biology would be fab but any is ok as methodology in psychology is all about the science) and another science or a social science or English are great
