Wearing a poppy at job interview

YouThank · 08/11/2020 15:39

AIBU to wear a poppy on my shirt when I go to a job interview? I have two interviews lined up this week, one on Tuesday and one on Friday.

My sis says I shouldn't wear a poppy for an interview and certainly not after the remembrance day e.g. on the Friday.

I don't know why you shouldn't wear it and tbh I didn't know you weren't supposed to wear them after 11th but if you're unsure then surely it's easier to just not wear it?

there is no reason why you can't wear a poppy after the 11th, just sounds like some people on here wearing their judgy knickers,
Nanny0gg · 08/11/2020 16:49

You can if you want, but I personally don't after the 11th

AgeLikeWine · 08/11/2020 16:49

Depends on the job. If I was applying for a job in most of the public sector, a charity or academia, and thought there was a good chance that the people interviewing me might be very left wing & right-on, I probably wouldn’t wear a poppy. Rightly or wrongly, the poppy has been politicised in such circles.

If I were applying for a job in the private sector, or anything connected to the police or defence of course I would wear one without a second thought.

JoeBidenIsGreat · 08/11/2020 16:49

I don't see the problem if it's very important to you.
Small & discrete, all that.
I have interview on Friday coming & didn't plan to wear a poppy then even though DS is a serving soldier forgot to wear one today too

Yourpartjewishfriend · 08/11/2020 16:51

Well this thread is depressing as a veteran and someone who lost friends in active service. Some people are offended by a poppy, so fuck veterans eh? They only died for us. But heavens above we must not offend people. We wouldn't want that.

Winniewonka · 08/11/2020 16:52

Barbed Reference I've heard it all now! If someone interviewing can't distinguish between an Oriental Poppy and a Flanders Poppy - the reason they were chosen as a symbol of remembrance is because they grew in the trenches, that's their problem!

YouThank · 08/11/2020 16:52

Is it a faux pas to wear after 11.11.?

OP posts:
SweetPetrichor · 08/11/2020 16:52

I wouldn’t. I don’t think any recruiter will give it a second thought if you do, but it does have a degree of political statement to it so just in case, I’d steer clear of it.

totally agree with this, shove 'the faux pas after the 11th shit' god this thread has really wound me up ! romeo, deep breath....
nosswith · 08/11/2020 16:59

I would on Tuesday but not on Friday if it were me. Though I would not be upset if you wore one on both days, nor if you did not on either. You have the choice because of those who died in war and why they fought for this country and its values.

As for those offended, other than the footballer James McClean, I have yet to come across anyone.

PhilCornwall1 · 08/11/2020 17:01

It's high time the terminally offended were told to fuck off.

Kcar · 08/11/2020 17:01

I wouldn’t wear it after 11th.

Well tbh, to a lot of people in the world the British Army was an occupying force who committed atrocities on our people for the greed of the empire.

Chocolatepeanuts · 08/11/2020 17:02

Where do you live? Not a chance I would wear a poppy to an interview but Im in NI. Way too divisive.

BackInSeptember · 08/11/2020 17:02

Wear it with pride.

speakout · 08/11/2020 17:06

fuck off with the reasons why i shouldn't wear a poppy, and all year round if i want to. i've got a visible poppy tattoo on my wrist and i'm proud to display it

I support your views.

Some people think differently that's all.
Some people question the ideology of war. That thousands of young men are sent to death and then glorified as heroes if they die is not the whole story. The whole idea of herosim is in question. More like cannon fodder of confused and angry governments in charge.
So insead of seeing the whole debarcle as an absolute tragedy we glorify the dead, paint a picture of the part they sacrificed as being something so important.
Except it isn't .
It is a waste of life. It isn't a noble cause. It is a valuable person gone.
There is nothing noble about war. It is a petty sqaubble on a global scale.
Every life lost is a tragedy.

Yourpartjewishfriend · 08/11/2020 17:07

@alittleprivacy I personally remembered old colleagues of mine who died in Afghanistan, there is one village they liberated from the Taliban and now the girls get to go to school. They were passionate about that.
I also cried because my husband lost his best friend in active service, he died 8 years ago, and he still misses him every day.
Please remember human beings when making your blanket statements about the poppy. I am a good person and was very proud to serve my country. It breaks my heart my deceased friends won't be respected because of something we did 200 years ago.
Please just try and respect the poppy today, whilst those of us who have lost people need some space to mourn.

OneKeyAtATime · 08/11/2020 17:07

What is wrong with wearing it after the 11th? Is it time to..forget?

CoffeeAndWhisky · 08/11/2020 17:10

If you're in England and in a mostly English industry, sure. Elsewhere, more of a risk. It has become, whether intended or not, a symbol to remember British, and particularly English soldiers. Many of which killed people in my home country. Personally, I don't really care what others do, although you wouldn't ever see me wear one, but others have some pretty strong feelings about it.

Petitmum · 08/11/2020 17:11

Fine up to and including the 11th, not after.

TibetanTerrier · 08/11/2020 17:11

As a pp has said, the British Legion always emphasises that there is no wrong time to wear a poppy, and no wrong way to wear it. Yet every year we see people instructing others as to when they should not wear it and how not to wear it.

I wear a small poppy brooch on my coat all year round, and having a number of pieces of British Legion jewellery (earrings, bracelet, necklace, pendant) I wear those whenever I feel like it too. Leading up to Armistice Day I always wear a full size poppy on my coat and on my indoor clothing, as do most of the people I know. Certainly most of the people I worked with wore one in the office during that period.

We should wear a poppy whenever we want to and in whatever way we choose to. I wouldn't want to work for any company that penalised me for wearing a poppy.

Maireas · 08/11/2020 17:12

@Yourpartjewishfriend - absolutely. We also conveniently forget that the armed forces have saved us from atrocities as well.
No army in the world has a clean historical record. I wear my poppy to remember the people in my family who never returned, never got a chance to live out their lives in peace.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 08/11/2020 17:16

@LubaLuca

I agree that wearing it on Friday might look like you're forgetful or lack attention to detail.
Mine is on my coat all year round (a pin, not a paper one), I wouldn't even think to take it off
