Wearing a poppy at job interview

AIBU to wear a poppy on my shirt when I go to a job interview? I have two interviews lined up this week, one on Tuesday and one on Friday.

My sis says I shouldn't wear a poppy for an interview and certainly not after the remembrance day e.g. on the Friday.

If you wear it after it might looked like you didn’t wash your clothes, check your appearance?

GroundAlmonds · 08/11/2020 16:12

@speakout

Don't! Poppies are becoming a bit of a hot potato- for lots of reasons.

Stay neutral.

What? Why?
speakout · 08/11/2020 16:13

And isn't that a very sad thing.

No.

BlueThistles · 08/11/2020 16:14

I wear a poppy broach all year round

LubaLuca · 08/11/2020 16:14

I agree that wearing it on Friday might look like you're forgetful or lack attention to detail.

FippertyGibbett · 08/11/2020 16:15

Only on the 11th.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone with a poppy on their shirt. I wouldn't wear one on my clothing for an interview. If I happened to have one on my coat I probably wouldn't take it off if I happened to have an interview (unless you're going for an interview for a job reading the news, in which case do put one on your suit jacket)
I feel like there's become more of an expectation that people wear poppies and its seen as unpatriotic if you don't. Personally I don't feel comfortable with that.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 08/11/2020 16:18

@BashfulClam

You shouldn’t wear it after the 11th. I’d wonder why you were and I wear mine until the 11th.
Would you like to explain your statement that you shouldn't wear one after the 11th? Would you like to explain to the British Legion why your opinion is more important than theirs?
eachtigertires · 08/11/2020 16:23

As an interviewer I probably wouldn’t even notice if you were wearing a poppy or not.

ArtieFufkinPolymerRecords · 08/11/2020 16:25

Really? Almost everybody on live TV has one pinned to their shirt/jumper/dress in the week or so before remembrance day.

EUnamechange · 08/11/2020 16:31

Avoid it if the interviewers are in China / Chinese company, as there it has previously been taken as a barbed reference to the Opium Wars.

Bagadverts · 08/11/2020 16:32

I’m not a manager/interviewer but can’t see a problem. I might wonder a little if on a blouse rather than coat after 11th but just a brief though. I mean a normal poppy because others like the shiny ones might be distracting (same as shiny jewellery might be).

LubaLuca · 08/11/2020 16:32

People on TV put them on their dress or whatever, because they have to be seen to be wearing them. In real life, people tend to pin them to their coat because it's more practical.

ffs, not necessarily you op so sorry in advance BUT who really gives a shit about that ? all i'm aware of is that millions of all nationalties have been killed in wars as forces and civillians past and present, so fuck off with the reasons why i shouldn't wear a poppy, and all year round if i want to. i've got a visible poppy tattoo on my wrist and i'm proud to display it Angry
MrsTerryPratchett · 08/11/2020 16:35

It's this kind of weird spikiness that's poppy wearing a hot potato. Pretty much no one I know wears one after the 11th. The British Legion can say there's no etiquette but often there is informal etiquette around things.

Jellycatspyjamas · 08/11/2020 16:35

I have a poppy brooch that I wear on my indoor clothes. It would never occur to me not to wear it at this time of year and I’d be questioning why someone might find it offensive, I certainly wouldn’t be working for them.

romeolovedjulliet · 08/11/2020 16:36

good for you and why not ? Smile
cabbageking · 08/11/2020 16:36

Stay neutral. You do not know the interviewer views.
Not everyone sees it the same way.
Get the job and wear one next year in situ.

IdblowJonSnow · 08/11/2020 16:37

Some people are down on it now. However if commemorating it is important to you and reflects your values (and you want to wear it) then you should do.
Good luck!

Then they should've interviewing should they?

Shouldn't that should say.

Not the impression I want to give Blush

I always wear poppies during remembrance week and didin't know that you were not supposed to a day or 2 after.

I am an ex interviewer and I wouldn't judge you either way.
I probably would wear one on tuesday and probably not on friday but I don't think it's an issue if you did.
I don't understand why your sister thinks it's not ok.
Best of luck
