Expired medication

Posting here as more traffic. I'm badly constipated at the moment & I have a full box of Movicol that has expired in September? It would be a shame to let it go to waste. Does anyone know if it would be ok to take or should I get a new prescription?

Crack on. If it gives you diarrhea you know it’s gone off.

Personally, I'd turn a blind eye and use it but technically you should probably get a new prescription. Its not as if its 5 years out of date its just a couple of months if that, I doubt its turned into poison just yet.

britnay · 08/11/2020 11:23

it probably just won't be as effective

As long as its September 2020 it'll be fine

Fingers crossed 🤞 I think I'll chance it 😁

But that’s the result you’re after, isn’t it? Wink

It will be fine, and in the grand scheme of things not even really out of date.
During the first lockdown I had an outbreak of eczema. I used an unopened tube of prescribed steroid cream which cleared it up. It went out of date in 2016.

I'd check with a pharmacy, some medicines lose their effectiveness quickly, I used my blue inhaler for an asthma attack and it didn't work, it was 2 weeks out of date. Luckily I had a new one and that worked.

Movicol is fine as it’s just powder. I use the out of date version all the time as the pharmacy I use never have it in stock.
