Biden president at 78.

I just don’t really understand... 78? He will be 82 at the end of his term. They’ve made such a big deal about Trump being one of very few presidents who failed to secure a 2nd term so will Biden run again at 82? And then we have a 86 year old US president at the end of that term?

Is the consensus that Biden won’t see out this term and hand over to Harris?

I recall my grandparents needing 2 days of recovery after their UK-SA air travel at a younger age and there is no jet lag to factor in.
How is this guy going to cope? And quite honestly why does someone who should be enjoying their retirement have any desire to be president. I get these men live off power but why do voters think this is reasonable.

I am just pleased Trump has gone tbh.

Also, while it is not necessarily ageist to ponder the issue, the terms in which age is spoken about can be very racist. MN is a prime example.

flaviaritt · 08/11/2020 08:49

Those saying that he is too old are essentially saying that they wouldn’t employ someone because of their age. That is ageism however you try to dress it up.

And that is perfectly reasonable when someone is pushing 80. We’re not just making up the performance deterioration in all areas that comes with age. No, I do not want an 80 year old surgeon operating on me. No, I do not want an 80 year old driving a Navy submarine. If that’s “ageism”, oh well.

So racist sexiest trump is better...

Okay

Yes, I think he is.
stairway · 08/11/2020 08:50

Selfishly I also think Trump would have been better for the UK, I don’t think we will be getting any special treatment now or trade deals.

Ratatcat · 08/11/2020 08:50

It will be interesting to see how they divide up responsibilities between the VP and President and whether there are any differences this time round. While there are lots of marvellous individuals in their 70s and 80s contributing and doing interesting work (just look at the Lords) the risks of ill health are obviously much greater. It would be silly to pretend otherwise. That said though, we could have lost a sitting PM this year and he is only in his 50s.

flaviaritt · 08/11/2020 08:53

Cacacoisfarraige

And you are entitled to that opinion but it is not my opinion.

Charleyhorses · 08/11/2020 08:54

Cos Obama can't stand
Cos they totally misjudged the hatred for Hilary which allowed the orange one in.
Cos they had to play safe
Cos it worked.

Which means there is pressure on Johnson to deal with the EU in a more reasonable manner.
AlternativePerspective · 08/11/2020 08:54

Well, considering Trump was looking to buy out the NHS I don’t think we can consider that to be favourable to the UK can we? No didn’t think so.

The same people who are trying to discredit Biden on here are the same people who were talking about us losing our NHS to the states on the numerous Brexit threads.

It’s not hard to see how Trump gained so many votes though when around half the people on this thread who are looking to discredit Biden are clearly trump supporters. But of course that’s not really something many people want to admit to is it?

ThatsMeChickenArm · 08/11/2020 08:54

I was the fittest skinniest kid (70s) but my Uncle could run faster than me when he was 75 and I was eleven. He was still a ball of muscle in his nineties. It doesn't do to assume.

@flaviaritt

But how do you know, I mean, really??

I don’t. I think. Like everyone else, I have an opinion. It’s just not the one you want me to have.

I respect your opinion and don't will you to have any other opinion other than your own! But this response has just proved my point : people are making judgements about Biden based upon what they THINK he should be able to do based on his age, rather than his proven capabilities and experience. Remind you of anything?

Here’s what I don’t understand - Donald Trump is only a few years younger: why not the fuss about his age?

@ClaireP20m- I was laughing at the awesome typo of describing Trump as ‘sexiest’ (except auto correct changed it to ‘sexist’)

pinkearedcow · 08/11/2020 08:58
**@ivfbeenbusy* Biden is also deeply anti British and anti Brexit so don't expect any support on that respect*

Where do you get that he is deeply anti British from?
I think they may have got that from Farage as he was tweeting similar bile. Poor old Nige, no longer bessie mates with the Head Boy. And he lost 10K.

This has been such a great weekend!

I’m not. I am inferring things from his actions, words and behaviour, and from my knowledge of the performance decline that affects all of us with age (albeit unevenly). And yes, it reminds me of the democratic process. None of us have seen his medical records. We simply get told stuff and see stuff and form an opinion. It’s what voters have to do. Now, I am a UK resident so this doesn’t affect me directly, but indirectly it affects the whole world who sits in the Oval Office. I will form an opinion because I can’t help doing so.

The OP wasn't saying that.

Yup not saying I’d prefer trump at all. In fact I’d you’re talking about whether Trump or Biden is better for the UK, here in SA h the e word on the street is that Biden is better for us. So I’m glad he got in. Just have to look at our exchange rate to see how much better things have already gotten since Trumps decline started a couple days ago.

@7Days

Maybe we should reframe it as Wisdom.

He's been around a long time, seen a lot come and go, age has a lot to offer.

We could look on it as the Dream Team leading the US, Experience & Wisdom plus Energy & Grit

Nicely phrased
stairway · 08/11/2020 09:00

We might keep our NHS but we’ll have no way of funding it! I do hope Johnson will try harder with an EU agreement now his buddy has gone but I’m not holding up much hope.

flaviaritt · 08/11/2020 09:00

Cacacoisfarraige

No, no medical expertise at all. Just an ordinary voter looking at nearly 80 YO man running for (and now actually) President, and making a judgement accordingly. If we all needed to be qualified in some specific way before we could vote on political candidates based on what is in front of us, this would be 1820, not 2020.

If I’d paid much attention to US politics 4 years ago I would probably have asked the same question!
