Biden president at 78.

I just don’t really understand... 78? He will be 82 at the end of his term. They’ve made such a big deal about Trump being one of very few presidents who failed to secure a 2nd term so will Biden run again at 82? And then we have a 86 year old US president at the end of that term?

Is the consensus that Biden won’t see out this term and hand over to Harris?

I recall my grandparents needing 2 days of recovery after their UK-SA air travel at a younger age and there is no jet lag to factor in.
How is this guy going to cope? And quite honestly why does someone who should be enjoying their retirement have any desire to be president. I get these men live off power but why do voters think this is reasonable.

@cyclingmad

If he even makes it through one term and funny how suddenly there are vaccines hope announced after he has supposedly won.. flipping awful how peoples lives are being played with for the sake of politics
Oh Please Don’t go all conspiracy theory. Pfizer have already had to issue a press release to counter this crap
Aridane · 09/11/2020 19:33

@AllThatIAmRoom101

It's not the age that bothers me, just majorly pissed he is a sectarian twunt, among other things.
What is a ‘sectarian twunt ’?
blueangel19 · 09/11/2020 19:42

The thing is if you see for example David Attenborough who is 93. He looks much more lucid and sharp than Biden. Even Pelosi does. She is. 80.

@VinylDetective

There are plenty of people here who share your joy *@DreamTheMoors*. Everyone I know feels as if a weight’s been lifted. It reminds me of 2 May 1997.
@VinylDetective Thank you for celebrating with us today as we celebrated with you in 1997. I remember that day.

We must always have hope. Flowers

crazeelala2u · 09/11/2020 20:21

He won't be president long. There's already talk over here about him 'retiring' 6 months in and Harris being president and Pelosi being vice president.

All hell breaks loose if Pelosi gets any more power though.

MrsZola · 09/11/2020 20:25

My dad retired at 80, he's almost 90, lives alone, independently, drives, has all his faculties and if he wanted to would still be capable of working.
Biden is a spring chicken at 78.

Wilkie1956mog · 09/11/2020 20:25

Nothing against Joe Biden himself but his age is not really ideal for the position of President, and I do wonder why the Democrats couldn't have had someone younger and a bit more enthusiastic and charismatic running against Trump. It was an absurd spectacle to have two elderly men both accusing each other of being the most demented. Having said that, I do believe Biden's intentions are good and I wish him well. And anyone will be better than that monster Trump.

Teddybear27 · 09/11/2020 20:38

I also heard a rumour that it costs a FORTUNE to run for President. Apparently it cost Trump and Biden a combined total of 1.3 billion dollars to run for President for the 2020 election. I’m guessing if you are younger maybe you don’t have that kind of wealth unless you are Elon Musk!!

MoreHairyThanScary · 09/11/2020 20:51

I used to look after a 94 year old sharp as a tack and swam significant distance 3x a week.

Biden is only 4years older than Trump!

Strangeways19 · 09/11/2020 21:07

He could be a robot as far as I'm concerned as long as Trump is out I don't care

KurtansCurtains · 09/11/2020 21:20

Absolutely amazed by this thread about how many 'sprightly' 80-99 year olds there are out there, that are still doing manual labour and and generally giving people who are in their 20's a run for their money.

I might start another thread off the back of this one, asking whether it would fair to raise the pension age to 90. I'm sure the responses would be completely different.

Chrisshaw911 · 09/11/2020 22:50

Cant judge him on his age their both old duffers, so you go on the best person for the job or in this case least lunatic

Celestine70 · 09/11/2020 23:01

I think he went into it intending to beat Trump, but will hand over to Harris. I'm just happy Trump is out.

MrsPumpkinPie · 09/11/2020 23:31

My Dad’s 98, razor sharp, loves politics and business, still does the best gags, writing a book on his computer, still mows the lawn. Bought himself a new car for his 95th and drove my Mum to the S of France and back in it! Age is but a number etc

Jourdain11 · 09/11/2020 23:32

In a way, better to do it (be a president or PM) at the end of your career. More experience to call on. And what do you do afterwards, if you're PM in your 40s? (Go around making money and pissing everyone off, or sitting in a shed and pissing everyone off...)

Mamanyt · 09/11/2020 23:43

LOL, have you really seen much of this 78 year old man? Maybe not, over there. He is sharp as a tack. He bicycles MILES several times a week. He jogged up the long ramp to give his first speech as the President-Elect.

Public service is at the heart of his life, and he's been doing it for decades. He wasn't going to run at all again, but when we had the incident at Charlottesville and Trump's response was "very fine people on both sides," he felt that he had to!

I am certain that Joe is planning a one-term presidency, I think he was setting Kamala Harris up for a good run in 2024.

Hear hear. An “old duffer” indeed. The ignorance is making me squirm. Biden is exactly the sort of person who is needed.

Fantastic. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Jourdain11 · 09/11/2020 23:57

I did laugh when someone (Emily Maitlis) said Trump's team had set the bar so low for Biden that all he had to do to jump over it was to manage to walk up to the debate platform without falling over and string together a coherent sentence 😂

MoonJelly · 10/11/2020 00:02

My parents moved to sheltered housing when my father was 84. He confused them somewhat by prioritising an internet connection and somewhere to store his bike.

NoToMisogyny · 10/11/2020 00:24

Biden is planning to legislate women out of existence on ‘day one’ and Kamala Harris has pronouns in her bio. Not quite the dream team I would have hoped for.

remaininlight · 10/11/2020 00:32

As long as he's mentally competent, what difference does his age make?Hmm

Sara2000 · 10/11/2020 02:34

I agree with you OP. It seems bizarre that a country that big can only come up with a pair of old duffers.

Sara2000 · 10/11/2020 02:36

And all these people coming up with anecdotes of people in their 80s being as 'sharp as a tack' because they can ride a bike or take someone shopping twice a week it's not comparable with being the president of America is it?
