To ask if you consider 60 elderly

I would say maybe early older adulthood.

70 is my threshold for elderly.

I know the word elderly has stigma but * I * don't give it stigma. It's just a phase of life.
Elderly is not same as frail. There are 90 yr olds doing triathlons -- they are still elderly.

anxiiousone · 08/11/2020 04:46

Life expectancy in UK is 82-ish so at 60 you are three-quarters through your life.

beautifulmonument · 08/11/2020 04:47

Definitely not.
I'm in my 30s

Nannewnannew · 08/11/2020 05:08

Definitely not, but I have seen on MN, when driving was discussed, that a couple of posters had suggested people over 60 should stop driving!
When asked how they would get to and from work the poster replied, taxi or bus!! 😂

Mintjulia · 08/11/2020 05:19

It depends on the individual.

A 60yo who exercises regularly, eats healthily, has teens to maintain youthful insight and works, is very different from someone who has smoked, drunk excessively, eaten endless fryups and done no exercise for 40 years.

PopsicleHustler · 08/11/2020 05:23

Nope. I wouldnt even say 70 is elderly

People at 60 or in 60s are still gardening, working, holidays, keeping up a fit and active lifestyle.

HappyChristmasTreeRex · 08/11/2020 05:37

No, I know everyone thinks differently but the rough guide I go by is:

0-18 = child
18-40 = young
40-70= middle aged
70-90 = old
90+ = very old

groovergirl · 08/11/2020 05:43

No - but if you ask Mumsnetters what a 60+ woman wants for Christmas, it'll be bedsocks and jigsaws.

Ha! More likely hiking socks and a contribution to their travel fund. The 60-somethings I know (I'm in Australia) are unstoppable bushwalkers and travellers, always planning the next long-haul trip. My 66yo friend recently went hiking in Ethiopia. My DM, at 69, went on the Trans-Siberian Express then piloted a boat through the canals of France.

Generally I'd say 40-69 is middle age, yet I'd hesitate to call someone of 70 elderly. Many people in their 70s are working and travelling still. My DD, who died at 88, said 80 was when he began to feel the slowing-down effects of old age.

Dinosauraddict · 08/11/2020 06:18

In my mind elderly is 70+, when you're post retirement age.

AuntieMarys · 08/11/2020 06:19

I'm 60 and I love a jigsaw! But I also love hiking, live bands, travelling( definitely not cruises or coach holidays!) , weights and spin.
Oh and great frequent sex.

Dinosauraddict · 08/11/2020 06:19

And from some of the people who are quoting 'middle aged' at things like 60, sounds like medical advancement has come on far more than I realised and we'll all be living way past 100!

Dee1975 · 08/11/2020 06:21

No

Londonnight · 08/11/2020 06:27

No! I am 62 this month and certainly not elderly!! I still work full time, can't get state pension until I am 66, so the Government don't class me as elderly either.

userxx · 08/11/2020 06:28

Absolutely not.

joystir59 · 08/11/2020 06:29

I'm 63. No. Fitter healthier slimmer and younger in outlook than most.

Temporarything · 08/11/2020 06:33

Even 30 years ago, 60 was old. We’re living longer now and generally healthier so 60 is more the end of middle age.

100 years ago you’d probably have been at 60 though!

FlatandFabulous · 08/11/2020 06:39

No, but I am 57. At our boxing class in the gym today Dh (54) and I were definitely the oldest in the room but tbh the 20 somethings were sweating as much as we were. I still have a teenager at school and work so I definitely don't think of myself as elderly.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 08/11/2020 06:47

I think depending on the individual most people slow down a lot from late 70s or in their 80s.

evilharpy · 08/11/2020 07:15

I work in financial services and we consider 80+ to be elderly.

My mum was elderly at 60. My mother in law is 70 next year and I wouldn't consider her elderly at all, although her knees aren't what they used to be. My glamorous auntie is late 70s and will never be elderly.

FippertyGibbett · 08/11/2020 07:16

No because I’ll still have another 7 years to work !

ApolloandDaphne · 08/11/2020 07:19

I am 58 and would concede I am middle aged. I would describe my 80yo DM as old and my 93yo FIL as elderly. Mostly because my DM is very spritely and still living in her home whereas my FIL is in a home because he cannot take care of himself now.

tinytemper66 · 08/11/2020 07:20

As some one who is 54 I say hell no! I look at my mum who is now 75 and think she is starting to come elderly.

hopefulhalf · 08/11/2020 07:31

Health care of the eldery (what was called geriatrics) starts at 75, that is where I would put my mark down.

CaptainMyCaptain · 08/11/2020 07:33

Absolutely not, although I'm 65 and have just described myself as being elderly on another thread to make a point I don't really feel elderly.

Calmandmeasured1 · 08/11/2020 07:38

No not elderly at all.
