I would say maybe early older adulthood.

Oldish but not Elderly

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 07/11/2020 23:49

My 12 year old thinks I’m ancient at 46.🤣

Tavannach · 07/11/2020 23:49

It depends how people see themselves. There's a woman at work in her sixties who definitely isn't elderly and doesn't behave that way. I also have a neighbour in his sixties who seems really elderly - he is ill though.

june2007 · 07/11/2020 23:57

No, many people not yet retired by then.

Honeyroar · 07/11/2020 23:58

I’d say it was going into the latter stages of middle age. Elderly is probably later 70s. 90s is very elderly- a lot of people aren’t lucky enough to make that.

A lot of it is down to luck and genes. People’s perception depends on how old their family members tend to live to.

Saladfingersscaresme · 07/11/2020 23:58

No, not at all.

Saracen · 08/11/2020 00:03

Borderline. It couldn't be called middle-aged, so it must be getting toward elderly.

Serin · 08/11/2020 00:03

God no!
Most 60 year olds I know are at the absolute top of their game professionally.
I'm 51 and am starting a Masters next year.

PickAChew · 08/11/2020 00:04

No way. Though that depends on health.

BackforGood · 08/11/2020 00:06

No, but I do agree with what @ShellsAndSunrises said on P1.

I say this most respectfully, as I am nearly there myself, but I might use the term "older lady" or "older gentleman" if I was trying to describe someone who was 60. Like most things, it would depend on the context.

"Elderly" does suggest someone who is getting frailer with age, and that comes to some earlier than others.

CoronaBollox · 08/11/2020 00:07

I would say Yes. Actually there should be a new word, because when I say elderly I think of 80ish year olds. Pre elderly maybe 🤔

CherryPavlova · 08/11/2020 00:07

Gracious no. The President elect is 77 before he’s even started.

Rosebel · 08/11/2020 00:11

I'd say 80+is elderly. My brother turned 50 this year and my 14 year old sent him a text saying is it great to be an OAP? Obviously sarcastic but she really does consider him old which is depressing as I'm only 10 years younger than him.

Cactuslockdown · 08/11/2020 00:12

No! Most people are still working! Elderly to me is frail, shuffling... probably more related to general health than actual age

ZZPer · 08/11/2020 00:15

No. 60 year-olds are working age, so cannot be elderly. It’s an impossibility.

Strictlysilly · 08/11/2020 00:17

No i did when a lot younger but now parents that age no i don't.

Lovely1a2b3c · 08/11/2020 00:19

No. I think of 'Elderly' as being 80+ or possibly 75+ in poor health.

IdblowJonSnow · 08/11/2020 00:21

Maybe when I was a kid! Not now tho. Agree it depends on the individual.

mummysherlock · 08/11/2020 00:22

No. Would consider 75 and over as elderly.

honeylulu · 08/11/2020 00:23

No. My husband is 60 in 2 months and we have a 6 year old. He's not allowed to be elderly yet!

pigcon1 · 08/11/2020 00:24

I think 80 is elderly

5foot5 · 08/11/2020 00:25

Hell no. I am still only 58 but DH is nearly 63. Neither of us considers ourselves elderly.

However, someone said
"but if you ask Mumsnetters what a 60+ woman wants for Christmas, it'll be bedsocks and Jigsaw"
Last Christmas I had both those items on my list! Though I did specifically ask for alpaca socks and I do love the occasionally jigsaw

ArtieFufkinPolymerRecords · 08/11/2020 00:26

@Serin

God no! Most 60 year olds I know are at the absolute top of their game professionally. I'm 51 and am starting a Masters next year.
Our head is 60 and her energy levels put most people half her age to shame.
ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 08/11/2020 00:27

Definitely not elderly. I think the definition of middle age should be taken less literally, if you are of official working age I class that as middle age be it 40 or 67.

thisgardenlife · 08/11/2020 00:31

Not a bit elderly. Theresa May is 64 and she's only just stopped being Prime Minister. Margaret Thatcher was 64 I think when she stepped down.

I'm 63 and don't get a pension until I'm 66 so I can't possibly be elderly as I'm supposed to be fit and energetic enough to work full time. If anyone would have me.
