He is talking about Newt Gingrich who isn't British as far as I know

Pomegranatespompom · 08/11/2020 15:46

Yes - I’ve a memory of an Irish bar in New York, people mistily missing their homeland they hadn’t ever visited. Although of course, people should visit lovely Ireland.

I think it's those people politicians seek to identify with, not the nationals of those countries. They're saying, "I'm one of you, 3rd generation immigrants and we share a common inherited culture", not "I'm one of you, national of X country"

I have several American friends here in Maine who've never visited Ireland but have Irish passports.

I was born on the island of Ireland but I don't have an Irish passport
Apileofballyhoo · 08/11/2020 15:56

I don't know about the Irish thing being fake. Don't Americans usually tag a label onto American? I have a great grandfather from another country, grew up bearing his surname and I have cousins in that country I feel connected to, and I feel a vague sense of connection to the place he came from, I'd like to see the streets he grew up on and I'd like to visit my great great grandparent's grave. My grandad brought my Dad and uncle to visit his family there when my Dad was small. My great grandfather was my grandad's Dad and I remember my grandfather well and I loved him, so I do feel a connection to this long ago dead man that my grandfather loved.

Perhaps it's harder to understand if you grow up surrounded by family in a place your family has lived for centuries.

I also have a lot of American cousins and their Irish connection is very important to them. Doesn't have any bearing on what way they vote though.

ListeningQuietly · 08/11/2020 16:01

There are millions of descendants of Irish migrants in the USA
probably more than there are Irish people in Ireland.

The USA is, rightly, proud of having supported the GFA
after decades of Noraid funding some unpleasant activities

If it comes down to support Ireland and the EU or support the former colonial power
its a pretty simple call

SpongeWorthy · 08/11/2020 16:01

@Roussette

Talking of conspiracy theorists Trumpy is rage tweeting again about Britain's best pollster telling him that the election was stolen.

No idea who he means.

Is he going to carry on like this through till inauguration?

Great British Bake Off Great British Sewing Bee

And now...

Britain's Best Pollster.

Jokes aside, Trump has actually lost the plot and I can only think that people will increasingly jump ship until they can do the equivalent of a vote of no confidence so he can't cause the level of chaos he's capable of between now and Jan 20th.

The possibility of pre-emptive pardons is an interesting one.

I'm just trying to remember where I read it, but there was an interesting article earlier this week on what Biden should do - suggesting publicly pardon him for federal crimes (thus avoiding martyr Trump), but then nail him for tax evasion later (in Al Capone style), while ensuring that all of his spawn get nailed for federal crimes (to avoid any chance of a dynasty rearing its ugly head). It was all quite persuasive, though I don't know to what extent it would work.

lyralalala · 08/11/2020 16:06

The fact Biden and his family lived with his grandparents will have kept him closer to the Irish roots as well.

His Gran had Irish grandparents, and by all accounts a big family. Each generation down that gets diluted a wee bit more, but when you spend more time with an upper generation it stays stronger.

I have much more affiliation with my family heritage than my cousins do, but that’s because I was brought up by my grandparents.

Hope Boris et al are having a rethink about interactions with Europe.

anon444877 · 08/11/2020 16:22

I find the European heritage many Americans identify with thing nice, it's about your family history after all, many of those left not because they didn't love Scotland, England, Ireland, Italy but because conditions were so hard. If they've kept part of their traditions alive that's something to admire.

Yes it doesn't mean they have a lot in common with modern day people from that country but I see nothing to laugh at in it.

My daughter has an American passport despite only living there 8 weeks as a baby though!

RedToothBrush · 08/11/2020 16:23

Jim Waterson @jimwaterson
I'm fairly certain that Donald Trump is currently basing his claim to the Presidency on a column that appears in today's Sunday Express. The paper has been consistently publishing weird outlying polls, often RT'd by Trump, that predicted he'd win big.

STALIN said it's not important who votes but how they are counted writes PATRICK BASHAM
Joseph Stalin said it's not important who votes, but how they do the counting. Fast forward to this American election and the late dictator's wry remark rings eerily true.

Apparently Newt Gingrich said Patrick Basham's name on Fox and Friends this morning.

So Trump is quoting someone who quoted the Communist Dictator Stalin as a defence for Trump. And he's not British.

Irony is dead in a ditch has laid there rotting for 4 years.

Its possible under certain criteria to be an irish citizen if you great grandparent was born in Ireland (and every subsequent generation did not).

If my grandmother and then mother had claimed citizenship before I was born, I would be able to be Irish too. Which is a bit mental, seeing as my great grandfather left Ireland (to move to France and then the UK) in around 1912 and he was born in about 1888 and I was born 90 years later.

MELANIA HAS TURNED!

Jim Sciutto @jimsciutto
New: First Lady Melania Trump has joined the growing chorus of President Trump’s inner circle advising him the time has come for him to accept the loss, a source familiar with the conversations tells CNN.

Oh dear. So thats Jared, Ivana & Melania.

Who is still holding out now then?

Rudy for the money and to protect his arse, Donnie Jr & Eric desparate to get the attention and love of their Dad always heaped on their sister and the Grifter Garage?

Pomegranatespompom · 08/11/2020 16:43

Please don’t think I was laughing about being proud of heritage - I really wasn’t.
I loved being part of Europe and like to visit America frequently, we like Disney too, I know that’s a bit looked down on on MN for some reason. Our visits to USA have not felt the same since DT, I’m so relived for the American people, everyone really.

RedToothBrush · 08/11/2020 16:46

Maggie Haberman @maggieNYT
Netanyahu on the election result, and with a note of kindness about Biden. Trump had tried to get Netanyahu to join him in saying Biden wouldn’t be as helpful an ally a few weeks ago. Netanyahu refused.

Benjamin Netanyahu @netanyahu
Congratulations @JoeBiden and @KamalaHarris. Joe, we’ve had a long & warm personal relationship for nearly 40 years, and I know you as a great friend of Israel. I look forward to working with both of you to further strengthen the special alliance between the U.S. and Israel.

BURNNN!

AcrossthePond55 · 08/11/2020 16:49

Ok, this pisses me off.

The media doing 'long lens' video of Biden visiting Beau's grave before attending Mass. It really bad quality video & mostly him just walking from the graveyard to the church, but it's still intrusive and wrong.

Take all the video of him you want entering and exiting the church. But have some common decency when he is finding a few moments of peace and meditation at his son's grave.

Grrrpredictivetex · 08/11/2020 16:50

I'm shocked actually he wasn't attending church like JB. He made a song and dance about religion during the run up from what I remember.
