@BruceAndNosh

I'm not sure how his status as an undischarged bankrupt would affect any application...Grin
Normally that would see you turned down 99% of the time.

Well he owns golf courses in Scotland, Ireland, and Dubai
No
he a shareholder in the company that owns the companies that own the golf courses

AcrossthePond55 · 07/11/2020 15:17

Thanks @lyralalala

When he was born he'd have had no automatic entitlement because it couldn't be passed through his mother, but that's been rectified so I'm sure there is a route for him.

That's interesting. So at one time citizenship could only be passed through the father? Here it used to be (ages ago) the opposite in the case of unmarried parents, US citizenship could only be passed through the mother. DNA testing rendered that moot so that restriction was abolished.

No, he wouldn't want to leave Ivanka. Unless he was fleeing to avoid prosecution. Then he'd leave her behind so fast it'd make her head spin.

@BlueCatRedCat , Yes they do. And you raise an interesting point. I don't know what would happen if a US president took up residence in a foreign country.

porkandbeans · 07/11/2020 15:18

Trump can't get British nationality through his mother. You can only get it through your father when Trump was born. He may be able to register as a British citizen but has a few hurdles to jump through.

He may be able to claim residency but not clued up on that bit

EscapeMoney · 07/11/2020 15:18

I feel like this is the part where the wife has made her escape and the narc husband starts threatening court action to take the children because the wife is "unfit"....

But he doesn't really want the children. He just wants to win.

There needs to be a way for Trump to "save face" to accept the loss. It may be this idea of him running again in 2024. Or that his loss is via fraud, so he didn't really lose, but he still goes away.

Apologies for incorrect detail... I was thinking of where he could confidently play golf without get chucked off the course!
ListeningQuietly · 07/11/2020 15:22

Bruce
He would not get kicked off the course
but lots of other people might accidentally hit their balls at him Wink

Copperas · 07/11/2020 15:23

Legal status passing via the mother not the father was fixed that way in colonial America so that children born to enslaved women would be born unfree, no matter who their father was Sad

GrouchyKiwi · 07/11/2020 15:25

I've just had a poke around the orange one's twitter. Hoo boy is that a ride.

Apparently some Trump supporters are upset that their Christmases are now ruined. Oh dear, so sad.

Trump would probably qualify for uk residency on the basis of the value of his business. (Millionaire can move here if they do enough business).

If he goes bankrupt that might be an issue...

...however he probably could earn enough through book deals etc etc.

So i think that would probably be his most likely route to a uk visa rather than via his ancestry.

Having said that the security issues are problematic. He might expect the British government to provide this or some how fund it. (Not happening. Politically toxic but British government). Bringing US State security to the uk would require permission of the British government (and they might not want that because they would him and Garage (sic) agitating which isnt in the interests of them and the state in general) and the US government (who may not want to foot the additional cost and the diplomatic bullshit it produces). Remember the UK government will also be keen to please the new administration so if he does come here with the intention of staying it will have to be with the approval of Biden (theres an argument Biden might just what shot of him winding up crowds and the hassle of a court room drama though).

Where it gets interesting is if Trump were to come before 20th January because i believe if he wanted residency he legally has to apply to the home office before entry. I can see him kicking up a fuss and expecting special treatment but again see about about Biden's approval.

He certainly wouldn't be allowed to legal to supply his own private security on his own terms (armed with guns) in the uk without the permission of the government and thats not going to wash when he could have US state security.

So yes Trump could come here, but he's going to have hoops to jump through and may have to abide by certain conditions he might not like and he will even as a former president have to ask permission on some level to do so from the new boss which he sure as hell isnt going to like!!!!

It was a peculiar rule for children born out of the UK could only receive citizenship through their father.

It wasn't until 2003 that it was rectified so that people, like Trump, who would have had an entitlement had his father been British could have the similar routes through their mother. The good citizen clause was added in 2005 or 2006.

If his father had been British he would have had an automatic right to live in the UK.

Desperate Grin

Matthew Thompson @mattuthompson

This is incredible. Part of Trump’s “evidence” of fraud in Michigan was that a staffer had been told by an anonymous person, who had themselves been told by other people that they’d been asked to fiddle with ballots.

The evidence? A yellow sticky note.

The judge threw it out.

GrouchyKiwi · 07/11/2020 15:35

Judge: Do you have evidence of this order? A letter? A recording?

Plaintiff: Uh, we have a sticky note, your Honor (U removed for verisimilitude), in some unknown person's handwriting.

One thing I am learning from this saga is that the judges with big personalities on The Good Wife were actually representative of real US judges.
