Where are all the small sizes?

First world problem alert!

But why is it always the 8-10 that sell out? It’s always the bigger sizes in the sales too? Are people getting smaller and shops not caught up?

The last few things I wanted to buy were all sold out in my size (10) and the smaller size (8) but available in every other size.
It’s annoying! Get your act together shops! Angry

@MaidenMotherCrone did you read my post?! Why is it always the small sizes that sell out, often very early! The large sizes often go in the sale because there’s less demand. So I think they need to make more if the small and less of the big! Wondered if it was just me who finds this annoying. It’s so widespread

Different areas have different sizes left.

Whenever I went to Lakeside Primark, or maybe it was Romford? They only ever had the tiny sizes, and a manager told me the other sizes all sell out quicker.

🤷

kowari · 05/11/2020 20:46

I agree. I was lucky to find one pack of knickers in a size 8 in Sainsburys the other day, heaps in size 10-14. None in a 6!

PrincessandthePeach · 05/11/2020 20:51

I've been looking for nice pyjamas recently from Primark and I've barely been able to see any in my size. I'm a 4-6 or can wear a 6-8 but it's a bit too big. I've been seeing far more bigger sizes such as 20-22 etc

barregirl1 · 05/11/2020 20:53

Agree with Emilyfrost - impossible in lots of places.,I go shopping to buy something nice to wear and end up cheering myself up with a lipstick 😂 when I really want to buy a dress or a skirt but everywhere starts at size 8/10

Ilikeviognier · 05/11/2020 20:53

I’m a 6 petite so it’s very rare for me to find anything to fit in an actual shop these days. Try online OP.

I’d say that it’s usually the sizes at either end of the scale that are usually left at any one time, and the more common sizes in the middle are gone.

squeekums · 05/11/2020 21:00

@emilyfrost

I’m a 6 and it’s pretty much impossible to find at any time 🤷‍♀️
Agree, as another size 6, as a result, i buy a lot from wish, they have my size and designs i like I buy mostly online in general, the one place my size dont seem a rarity
purpleme12 · 05/11/2020 21:05

I'm size 6 in Dorothy Perkins (not that small elsewhere!) And it's rare to find that size in tops there. So annoying

Also Primark why can you never find their smallest size in pyjamas?? It's ever rarer to find the smallest size in pyjamas there! I have to buy the size up and have it not fit right!!

Marcelduchamp · 05/11/2020 21:09

In a 20 to 22 and always see the opposite! I always feel like there's loads of 8s and 10s because there's actually not many thin people around!? Obvs except here Grin maybe no matter what size you are you feel there's never your size left?

tigger001 · 05/11/2020 21:13

Try finding anything in a 6 still in stock or actually available, and a six 6 petite is like rocking horse poo !!

kowari · 05/11/2020 21:14

Also Primark why can you never find their smallest size in pyjamas?? If it's cheap then I think the teens take all the smaller sizes.

Graffitiqueen · 05/11/2020 21:18

Totally disagree. When I was looking through the sale rails recently there were only 6-10s left.

Ilikeviognier · 05/11/2020 21:20

6P is def like rocking horse poo in actual shops!!

ArtieFufkinPolymerRecords · 05/11/2020 21:39
@Bwlch they sell 6,8,10 so not just big sizes.
It's vanity sizing again. When I was a teenager I used to wear size 10 from Topshop, Miss Selfridge etc. and size 8 weren't really very common. I reckon a 10 in M and S now is probably equivalent to a 12 or 14 from the eighties, so not particularly small and probably lots of people wear that size.

Ilikeviognier · 05/11/2020 21:52

Artie- totally agree. In the 90s I was a size 10 in the shops (like topshop). My weight is basically the same now but I have to buy size 6.

BusterGonad · 05/11/2020 22:00

When I worked in a clothes shop (cheap fast fashion) we'd get 1x size 6, 2x8, 4x10, 4x12, 2x14 and 1 or 2 16s. If they sold well we'd get another set in. This was about 20 years ago, but if your size isn't in high demand then they won't get lots of stock in. I personally think the most popular sizes for a 30 to 40 year old woman are 12s, 14s and 16s but I could be wrong.

Goingdooolally · 05/11/2020 22:05

True about vanity sizing (I have a vintage 1950s dress in a 12 that I needed let out at the ribcage and I wear an 8 mostly in modern clothes) but not the point of the thread. I could literally post up the last 4 things I was going to buy online and all
OOS in a 8/10 which were the smallest 2 sizes. Shops - stock more small sizes!

Givemeabreak88 · 05/11/2020 22:06

I’m another that only ever sees the opposite, always the smaller sizes left and all the bigger ones gone. Same with shoes I’m a horrible size 8 and I can never find my size, plenty of size 5 and 6 though! It’s so frustrating

BusterGonad · 05/11/2020 22:22

I think it also depends on the shop, a shop that mostly has teenagers as customers will sell out of the smaller sizes sooner then one aimed at middle aged women, I'd imagine anyway.

Goingdooolally · 05/11/2020 23:21

@BusterGonad (great name!) you would think that but the shops were-Sweaty Betty, Seasalt, Massimo Dutti and M&S.

But even if that were the case, surely shops would realise this and make more of the smaller sizes... they must have ways of knowing about demand e.g those notify me buttons some places have.

OP posts:
BoomBoomsCousin · 05/11/2020 23:45

Companies make more of the popular sizes because going over by a few is, relatively, less risk.

If you’re selling 20 of one size and you made 22 that’s only a 10% oversupply. If you’re selling 3 of one size and you made 4 that’s a 33% oversupply.

CounsellorTroi · 05/11/2020 23:49

@Mumoftwoinprimary

I see the opposite to you all! I’m a 12 - 14 and it is always those sizes that are gone!

I guess we only remember when the size we wanted isn’t there.

Me too. There are always plenty of 6-8 or 16 and above.
MiddlesexGirl · 06/11/2020 00:08

I've only recently slimmed down to 8-10 and one of the big advantages is being able to find the smaller sizes.

I agree!!

The smaller sizes are always snapped up really quickly.

80sMum · 06/11/2020 00:58

I agree, OP. I got fed up with wasting my time driving the 15 miles to the nearest big town, paying to park, walking to the shops, finding something I liked but then discovering there were none in my size. I used to go home and order the item online. Then it dawned on me to cut out the middle bit and just order online in the first place!
The last time I bought clothes from an actual shop was in the summer sales in 2004!
