The fireworks tonight

AIBU or are you probably just an anarchist or an arsehole to be setting off fireworks and firecrackers during a lockdown, when official displays are banned?

There's no excuse to be frightening animals either tonight. Don't be a dickhead.

Yeah, people really love their fireworks.

I asked quite nicely on my local community facebook group if there were any locals planning firework displays in their back gardens as i have a new hamster and want to know if tonight is a good night to introduce it to the playpen.

People just laughed and thought it was a joke. Don't really see how its a joke, a hamster might be a tiny animal but its still included under animal welfare laws.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 05/11/2020 17:08

you bought your animals knowing bonfire night and fireworks exists. fireworks on bonfire night are not a problem.

Are fireworks banned under lockdown too? Ffs

lovepickledlimes · 05/11/2020 17:12

This year of course it's not possible but I really don't get why people insist on private fireworks. What is wrong with public ones.

Had my poor dog in fight or flight mode last night and struggled to calm her down with them setting off every 30 mins. I would not mind if people set them off on the actual night only but it seems to go on all month

annabel85 · 05/11/2020 17:14

But what are people buying them for tonight? Public displays aren't happening and it's illegal to let fireworks off in the street or in a public place.

They can be set off only on private land with the landowner's permission. Given the ban on household mixing, not many are going to be buying them for that purpose.

Did you honestly not expect people to laugh when you mentioned a hamster?
TigerBrite · 05/11/2020 17:24

I’m with you OP. People can’t be trusted to be sensible with fireworks. They should be restricted to organised displays by licensed professionals.

Halliehallie9828 · 05/11/2020 17:24

@annabel85 - to have some fun. In their own garden.

Because they like them
Because they can

OverTheRainbow88 · 05/11/2020 17:25

Yes we are, we need some joy and excitement. Boys can’t wait, they will love it; it’s 1 night a year, no need to swear! Hoping my neighbours do some for us to see too!

DenimDrift · 05/11/2020 17:26

is it fair to make the emergency services work even harder right now.....the inevitable injuries, fires and all that they bring

I’m sorry but if you posted that on my fb group I would think you were joking too

Fireworks are going to be a risk all week. Don’t bother with a playpen just in case

In their own garden, with no visitors, maybe, but i'd say most fireworks and bangs you hear tonight, won't fall into that.

If it's in your own garden with your own household it's fair enough.

If it were really just one night or the nearest Saturday I don't think people would mind. But it goes on for days, although I don't think there have been as many this year.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 05/11/2020 17:30

annabel85 we had fireworks in our garden without having people over when growing up, so I don’t get that argument.
Possibly should be banned from selling to the public as a whole argument but “due to Covid” bs isn’t flying with me on this one

That's the other thing. Not just this year, but any year. There's no need to be setting fireworks off outside of November 5th (or perhaps New Year's Eve, or some other special occasion).

OverTheRainbow88 · 05/11/2020 17:31

Yes in our own garden, also mainly sparklers and a few that go up.!!

Was mildly annoyed at whoever let some off last night at 2.30 am!!!

Chiwi · 05/11/2020 17:31

As I said on another thread. I have a firework scared dog, I have all year to consider this. He is my responsibility, it is irresponsible to ignore the problem all year then complain when your dog is frightened. You know it is bonfire night, take care of your own animals FFS.

Bluntness100 · 05/11/2020 17:32

Agree, antisocial and just so awful for some animals. I’d happily support a ban on domestic sales.

LastGoldenDaysOfSummer · 05/11/2020 17:33

It's bonfire night. Perfectly legal to have fireworks. Next door has all the grandchildren round for a small display. It's lovely.

annabel85 · 05/11/2020 17:36

Perfectly legal to have fireworks.

Legal to have them. Illegal to set them off in public places, if it's not an official display.

EatDessertFirst · 05/11/2020 17:39

I'm with you OP. Its already been done to death on other threads, and it'll get repeated here 'shiny thing go bang.....fuck the neighbours'.

My partner has combat PTSD and has had to medicate himself senseless every night this week due to selfish fucker garden fireworks. They should be banned except for licensed displays and even then restricted to specific time/dates.

The effect on animals, wild and domestic, doesn't enter into these dickheads minds. Nor does the effect on the NHS at a time when the burden on the service should be as light as possible. As long as they get their flashy things 'coz Covid'.

TickTickClock · 05/11/2020 17:45

Oh for goodness sake, it's a few small fireworks in a suburban back garden to bring a bit of joy to a really shitty year. I'm not mixing with anyone other than the people I live with.

SoupDragon · 05/11/2020 17:47

Perhaps the most ridiculous whine about fireworks ever.
