Ironing bedding!

I know boring question but how long does it take roughly to iron a duvet, two pillow cases and a sheet with a steam iron and starch??

I can see that getting into ironed bedding is maybe (fractionally) nicer than getting into non-ironed but not particularly creased bedding, but I don't see how it can 'make such a difference to a night's sleep'. Confused Surely once you're asleep in it, a) it's no longer perfectly creaseless and b) you're asleep so you won't notice anyway. Also, presumably it would mean that you only got a great night's sleep on the night you've just changed the bedding?

Anyway, if you like it ironed, you definitely need someone a lot quicker to do it. Sounds like your cleaning lady is completely taking the piss, however pleasant she may be.

yikesanotherbooboo · 05/11/2020 10:35

I like ironed bedding and have no tumble dryer , half an hour for a king size and a double quite easily .

babybunny123 · 05/11/2020 10:36

I iron the bedding when its on the bed so easy, takes mins.

goldenharvest · 05/11/2020 10:38

0 minutes. Tumble dry it and take it out immediately and fold. If it has an odd crease, I don't give a FF.

Nottherealslimshady · 05/11/2020 10:40

Ironing bedding?? Just ask her not to do it, why would anyone waste time or money for crease free bedding? I dont even iron most of my clothes!

Ihaveyourback · 05/11/2020 10:43

I am quite angry now, as we are decent people and we have been very good to her. She is young, 21, so we have cut her some slack I suppose, she has just finished uni very so much debt and now can't get another job.

I have been having so many health problems, the last thing I have cared about is the cleaning or what she is doing (or not doing) when she started she was great....

I just hate this conversations. I think she has some SN, so I need to be careful how I tell her. What a nightmare. The fog of pain lifted this week and I was pretty aghast at what I saw yesterday. Her plugged in, watching films, couldn't even hear me when I was talking to her. Spending so much time ironing one bloody sheet.

Thank you all for helping with this, as I was not sure I was being U

Have you got a trouser press, OP??

That’s your answer!

Obviously not perfect but better than nothing and does a passable job

who cares?

The whole point of employing and paying someone is to get something done you can't be bothered to do it yourself.

Like getting your car washed
Your windows cleaned
your garden done
Take-away food

Cleaners are free to refuse to do any ironing, some do, some don't. When they commit to do it and be paid for it, they shouldn't take the piss.

Ironed bedsheets are nice and look better.

I would get rid of this cleaner and employ a new one immediately.

Wannabegreenfingers · 05/11/2020 10:51

No I didn't miss the point of you being in hospital. Still madness to pay someone to iron bedding for £90.

BarbaraofSeville · 05/11/2020 10:52

Forget about that one for a start. She won't have pay a penny back until she starts earning £26k+ pa and unless she spends a good portion of her working life as an above average earner, most of her student debt will be written off anyway.

Sounds like you're going to have the 'resetting expectations' conversation and if she doesn't start working effectively, you're going to have to let her go.

If you list what you need doing, people who work as cleaners, employ cleaners themselves, or are simply housework enthusiasts will be able to give an idea as to what is a reasonable amount of time for it to take. Watching videos on a phone is certainly not expected when you're on an hourly paid job like this. Did you get references when you employed her?

Hopeisnotastrategy · 05/11/2020 10:53

Treat yourself to some easycare bedding and lose the ironing lady. She's extracting the proberbial.

namechange9817 · 05/11/2020 10:59

I run an ironing business and I would charge £6.50 for a double duvet, fitted sheet and 2 pillowcases and this would take about 30 minutes to iron so yes she is taking advantage!

CounsellorTroi · 05/11/2020 11:01

Ironing bedding is pointless unless you are putting it straight back on the bed. I rotate my bedding so when a set is ironed it gets folded and put away. If I ironed it it would be creased again by the time it got to the bed.

MaskingForIt · 05/11/2020 11:02

she has just finished uni very so much debt and now can't get another job.

I think she has some SN, so I need to be careful how I tell her.

What special needs do you think she has?

Anyone who has been through uni is going to have had feedback on their work, with more to come when they start graduate work.

itsbeen84years · 05/11/2020 11:04

She is spending 6 hours watching telly and probably having a kip in your bedding! Cheeky fucker.

Elizaaa · 05/11/2020 11:06

I know boring question but how long does it take roughly to iron a duvet, two pillow cases and a sheet with a steam iron and starch

Why on earth would you want to?

Ihaveyourback · 05/11/2020 11:06

Austism masking and dyslexia.

name I need you!!

Whatthebloodyell · 05/11/2020 11:08

Oh OP, please sack this woman. You are employing her to do a job that she isn’t doing. 6 hours to do 3 sets of bedding is fucking taking the piss! There are plenty of cleaners out there that will iron and do the cleaning in 6 hours. You don’t have to
put up with an inferior service just because she is ‘nice’ and you are polite. Just be honest with her. “I’m afraid that I am going to have to let you go because I need somebody who can iron and clean in the allotted time, and you are unable to do that”.

Whatthebloodyell · 05/11/2020 11:10

And if she does protest you can tell her that you will pay her the going rate for ironing, £6:50 per set rather than and hourly rate.

PlanDeRaccordement · 05/11/2020 11:17

Since she is young, nice, and only doing what you told her to do (iron sheets) you can’t honestly be angry with her for taking longer at the task due to autism/dyslexia.

I’d nicely tell her that the sheets are no longer a priority as you are now well enough to do that yourself. But you really need her to spend her time now on cleaning the house, which will mean headphones and music instead of a film. It also may mean you only need her for 4 hours instead of 6 (for example).

clary · 05/11/2020 11:19

Op where are you? If you are anywhere in the Midlands I'll come over and do your bedding for £90, no bother :😃

MyfanwyMontez · 05/11/2020 11:22

@TheMandalorian
Has Linda become the new Karen?

Ihaveyourback · 05/11/2020 11:22

clary I am otherwise known as Mug, just so you know, come and get paid to watch films Grin

OP posts:
NoParticularPattern · 05/11/2020 11:24

As nice as she might be- she’s not nice enough to not charge you £90 to iron three sets of bedding is she? There is no need for it to take that long unless they were tumble dried to within an inch of their lives and left to crumple for a week. Bedding doesn’t take very long at all if you’re ironing it when it’s freshly washed and barely dry. Even if it’s washed, dried and folded it cuts the ironing time down massively. She’s taking the piss. I would look into a laundry service and get them to do it. Then tell her you’ve outsourced the laundry so she can have chance to concentrate on actually cleaning. Her being a cleaner and all.

clary · 05/11/2020 11:24

Ihaveyourback sorry missed your updates, hope you feel better soon.

I love ironed bedding ad quite like ironing it. Doesn't take me six hours tho!
